UGH!! okay, I need some help (again!!)


My chicks arrived 48hrs ago......and while only 1 DOA out of over 120, last night and this am, they're dropping like flies!!! They're warm enough, no piling or wing spreading and panting......one minute some are running around...next minute very "sleepy" next minute feet up! I've lost 12 in two days. Am I being prematurely freaking out?? They're hydrated, drinking and eating?? NO obvious signs of anything!!

I called and left voice mail and emailed.

It seems to have tapered off, I haven't lost one since Noon and all seem okay (for now).

Is this expected loss? (chicken math??)

What's even more frustrating I ordered 25 rainbow layers 15 "rare collection" and 25 "hatchery choice", you'd think they would have somehow boxed them according to what is what, no? NOOO they were all just put into two big boxes (including 4 turkey) and I believe my Crested ducklings were separate as they may have come from another hatchery. PURELY POULTRY is not a hatchery as they say online, they are a broker, buying from many hatcheries. I cannot say I would EVER use them again right now.

Did you take them one at a time... out of the box and give them a drink of water? Sometimes with so many it looks like they are all drinking..but they are not. I would re dip every single chick. Do you have electrolytes in the water? Sugar?

Chicks dropping like flies is NOT normal. They start dying at this time because they are done using the yolk. They have nothing left. Sprinkle feed on the floor. Use your finger and tap by the feed so they can hear your tapping and watch your finger. Baby chicks are called by mom and shown feed all day long. You are now mom.

HI! again! homeschool, school work, work, house work, bills, shopping, critters, sleep (lack there of)..... I'm tired just thinking about whats keeping my busy.
Maple syrup mmmmm I would LOVE to learn how to make it. is it to late to learn and collect yet this year? If I read about it REALLY fast..... It would be nice to watch the process. or is it like butchering, you need to "wing it" to learn lol NOT that I need something else to do. lol
We are almost out of maple syrup and the kids LOVE belgian waffles lol (we just bought a belgian waffle maker at Kohls, and got a steel YAY)

Very, very good advice! If you do not dip each & every ones beaks in the water, they might not figure it out. And Sav-A-Chik in the water is almost essential, IMHO. Good luck!

Good evening...I have a little sap in the pail JJ...but maybe it is snow that melted on the cover? I know one tap is dripping a very little--the other one not at all. What did I do wrong? It sounds like you and H&R and practically drowning in the stuff! Could it be that my tree is on the North side of the house and not warm enough yet? I think I have to go and read....

Saw MXM today for coffee. We had a really nice visit...and tomorrow I get to visit with BigFam; IF she tells me and ETA that is! Of course her bator is finally stabilized! I must have gotten it pretty wet when cleaning it! Took 2 days!
Hurley I will be calling about quail eggs just to warn ya! LOL!

Popcorn for me for dinner...the fam is at the hockey game so I am not cooking anything. Doc says that my cholesterol level is high? WTH! I was at 180 last year and that was OK...now the max. levels have changed (to 150) and I am at 160 so it's not OK? HMMMM, guess I will be cutting back on my egg and fat intake. Pretty soon I wont be able to eat ANYTHING!

I think that the location of the tree does play into how much sap runs, we have 1 tree that gets the most sun compared to the other 3 trees and we collect the most sap from it. We now have 2 burners going with kettles of sap, we like to keep one boiling and one for warming up the sap- that way we don't have both kettles cooling down.

As long as the temps get above freezing durning the day and fall below freezing at night you can collect the sap. This next week looks good temp wise for collecting. We stop once the trees bud out.

Wine-bator is back up and running with temps around 99.7

so we will be putting the eggs over onto the trays in a little while so they can hatch out!
