ETA- this is not me, folks. I just copied & pasted from CL. I know a lot of you love horses or know people who do.

Quote: ugh- I know!!! If it were up to me they would be in the barn, but there are over 400 animals in the barns and literally no extra room. DH says that you also can't keep horses with dairy cows. It's illegal, or the milk factory won't take the milk then or something? It has been working out really well, since we covered the run with heavy clear plastic to keep out the wind and rain. We do have other buildings, but unfortunately my FIL won't let me clear them out so I can use them for something useful. This spring though, something is getting done differently to get the pony and the goats out of the chicken area and into a space of their own. I did check in with some horsey people, and they told me that all a horse needs is a shelter with 3 sides and a roof to get out of the elements. Is that not correct? They seem to be pretty comfortable until all this melting happened.

Quote: There is a concrete slab behind the coop that runs the length of the wall, but when we put the coop there originally I was concerned that the chickens wouldn't have any dirt or grass to scratch in. We built the fence later, so now they can scratch all they want. I think I will look into getting some gravel and sloping it. Thanks!

As long as the opening to the shelter is facing South (out of the cold North wind), and it has a roof, they should be fine. Maybe some straw in the shelter too would keep it warmer. Usually ponies are so fuzzy, you don't have to worry too much about them getting cold. It's the wet (on their body) that would chill them and not be good.

About the rare special big footed chicken
They are some expensive bird in one little mountain town I think in Japan..I am not exactly sure. I did not take notes, I just downloaded the picture. I thought the story was interesting. They are known for rich deep flavor profiles and extra large legs. I ran across it when TO was talking about eating feet.
Is this little mountain town downwind of Hiroshima, perhaps?

Can you say Chernobyl chicken, boys and girls?

x2. Maybe you could get one of those Versatube carports and butt it up against one of your existing buildings?
