Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning. I am tired of the winter weather!!!!! Could it just get warm already? At least we had a few warmish days, so the coop thawed and I was able to rake the bedding (DL) under the roost area and mix it all in.

Ok this is to those of you using FF. My hens are now having runny poop and it smells bad. Does this mean that it doesn't agree with them?
When you first start, they have what is called *clean out* It cleans the intestines and all the garbage that is in there..including sometimes worms. It is not pleasant. They will be better in a few days..The slough off can take a bit off time.
Quote: The snow is pretty, but, I am tired of it myself.

Ttly agree with bigfamily4me!!!! I can't take it anymore it is still snowing in Stevens point!!!!!
We have about 3 inches so far and going strong..

I think this is working....but I hit the reply button too soon!
Well DS(7) is now the proud caretaker of this little guy(of course with the help of me and his sister):

the green in his ear and on his fur is from his number being put in his ear. We picked him up yesterday, he is 8 weeks old. DS(7) is still figuring out a good name. DS(7) will be learning how to take care of him and get use to handling him.
What a cutie! Has he decided against chickens then? LOL! I think he should call him Patrick!

A little bit of Green and Colors other than White to remind us of how nice summer is :)
Thank you for this lovely pic! I was going through some of my old ones of green too....
I'm not embracing this crappy snow anymore!

I'll even take the deep @ss mud at my place over this!
My reply to this is NO NO NO!!!! I HATE mud season even worse than a never ending winter! And I agree with you NJ--dosnt help to complain about it! Another use for one of my favorite quotes: "It is what it is!" Yup--perfect for this!
Thats what he just got! Hes looking for a couple more. But in different colors :) he wants to pickle the eggs! H he's been trying all different recipes since the chickens started laying. I laughed and told him he was peeling those tiny eggs himself ;-)

Does anyone have any really good recipes for pickling?
Cuties--I have made LOTS of pickled eggs with my quail eggs. They are not real nice to peel because of the really tough inside membrane! I am going to try the piercing trick on them. I am not sure if my egg piercer will break that little shell though! I will look up my recipe and send it to you. Or you could look at the byc recipe site. It is from the book.
Oh good...that worked...now I can read the rest of the posts....Dh just came in. I guess he felt that working any more was a waste...

Thanks for posting that recipe Deli. It is a bit different than the one I have used but I think I am going to peel my big eggs that I boiled and make a jar. I havent had the big ones for a while. A couple questions, does this result in a really clear brine? and are the eggs actually spicy and hot or do I need to add more peppers? (DH and Dad like them spicy!) Thanks!

OK--Off to peel eggs....LOL! TerriO

I pickled a quart of quail eggs once.. it took 50 eggs to fill the quart jar..

peeling them was a chore, for sure,,

but since I did it that way, I talked with a guy who said to soak the eggs in vinegar overnight,, the shell is supposed to dissolve and they squeeze out of the membrane like grapes.. ( was going to say zits) but I didn't ..

I bought a thermometer at F&F today.. it is going back.. it reads 5 degrees low.. no matter where I put it..in the bator., in the room ,, outside..

I should send it to UnkaDan,, seeing as he is up Nort where it is always colder,,
Or do I have him mixed up with somebody else ??

I have Coturnix quail. They are very tamable unlike the Bobwhites I have been around. My cots are proficient layers. My 5 hens average 4 eggs a day. If you age them some, the eggs are fun to boil for salads and deviled for gatherings.

They must not ship well though. Sorry again Apyl
Dont worry about it. It happens. You also have to figure they got stuck in the mail like 4 extra days in freezing temps.
