Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning all--just waiting for my visitors here...someone is coming for goose eggs, Kristip to drop a birdie, someone to trade chicken eggs for delicious cheese curds from way up North and another person...but I cant remember why they are coming!
I have to get out and do chores and start my sap boiling! The new tree I tapped is a gusher for sure! I only have a gallon pail on it and I have to go out there multiple times a day or it is overflowing! I think I will switch the big bucket to that tree. Hey Doug and Cheryl, JJ or anyone else....this is probably the last day for gathering right? It looks like my tree is starting to bud a bit...how long can I wait?

I will finally get my chickens moved this weekend!

The gates seem to be nearly unfrozen. Unfortunately I will be moving them into messy quarters; the insides of the coops have frozen bottoms....oh well, I might try and work on that too, I am kind of messed up though because of having to travel to Appleton to my brother's place for Easter. It is nice to see everyone but the 4 hours in the car is crap when I could be doing something constructive! Maybe I will bring my cross stitch along and work on that. That's about the only time I get to work on it anymore! Once a year on Easter!

We had a great time at the Children's Museum with JJ and his fam. We saw MXM had her family including the
grandparents there! The kids were totally wound up and hardly ate any dinner. Got them in bed at 9:30. I thought they werent going to go to sleep easily but after a chapter in our book they went right to sleep. I think they were exhausted!

Well I better get outside and get that sap started. Nice to see you again DrH! Keep stackin' that wood!
COngrats on all the little babies! My hen still hasnt ventured out with hers. I finally got her down from the ceiling and she is just marching the babies around in the milk house.

Have a great day! TerriOnowgoingtolookforareallyBIGboilingpot

You can collect sap until it starts looking cloudy and tastes funny, bitter.

My kids both zonked out on the ride home from the kids museum, after we ate supper at Vilas park.(still a little chilly for picnicing by the way)

Hard to tell which chicks are mine at the museum. She ordered extras for others. Mine were ordered as a variety of rare Marans. Looked like I can count on a Splash, a cukoo, like 4 whites, and whatever else fills out the 8.

TerriO visits the kids museum and ends up picking dried poop off a silkie chick's vent.

Hafta go color eggs now.

Dr. HaHa my deepest condolences, it is so hard to lose a parent
Judge, sorry about the hatch

Sorry I have been absent, ds18 has finally returned home, broke, failing thank god no drugs or problems with the law. He finally admitted, things were a lot harder than he thought and realized why I have been telling him to do more homework, save more money. Not gonna be fun for him, he has a lot to fix but hopefully he can and will realize he is too young, inexperienced and poor to do it alone.

I spent the week looking for buff orpingtons , comets and silver laced wyandottes. no one has any. I called all the coops in 100 miles, as well as 3 tractor supplies.
I don't need 25 so the only place I can order from is meyers. I can't even special order from the coops without getting 25. I need to call Abendroth's Hatchery to see if they are open next Saturday and if I can pick up. a long drive but can make it adventure.

hope everyone has a Happy Easter

David

Oh the kids museum is a blast! We love to visit, although my kids are getting on the older side for it these days.
So one chick is still goopy with hard stuff. Another has an eye closed, but the rest are perfect. Still here peeping from the incubator with the last ten in there...we will see

We will probably collect through the weekend- DH has been watching the trees carefully and whatever we collected yesterday is being boiled down today. Anything collected today/tomorrow will be boiled down separately.

Well - I am sitting here bawling my eyes out. I knew something was wrong, so I candled the eggs. I pulled 16 of the 24. When I cracked them open it looked like 3 of them had maybe started, but the rest were just yolk. Nothing smelled bad- just warm yolks. I left in 8 that I couldn't be 100% sure on, but two of them are Ameraucana eggs, and I can't see in them. I am so upset. Like snot running down my face upset. I don't know what went wrong? I don't know what to tell the kids... No chicks for Easter, and they had been so looking forward to it. I don't know....

So sorry to hear, it's just heartbreaking to not have anything come of a hatch. Been there, done that enough to feel you pain!

I'm guessing you aren't close by, but if you want chicks and are willing to come Palmyra (near Whitewater) I can get chicks for your kids for Easter.

Morning everyone (notice I did not say good")

OK, soooo, April 1st (aka April Fool's Day) is still 2 days away, right??? Then how come it is snowing! I mean SNOWING!!!! Thought this was supposed to be a rain event. We did get a bit of a drizzle then HUGE flakes and now a full blown snow storm!

I really hope the EASTER BUNNY IS A SNOW SHOE HARE!!!!
barnie.gif

went out to check on the girls and my pullet, Noodle, hopped on the roost so she was eye to eye with me and commenced to SQUAWK at me!

Geesh, like I ordered this stuff!

Now I am going to make another pot of coffee, go over to the emergency thread to see if I can find out what's wrong with my poor Broody Momma and if I can help her (thinking water belly~she's kind of bloated and can feel the same egg in her belly that's been sitting there for days) finish the new "nursery" for the chicks coming on Tuesday, then start prepping the turkey for tomorrow.

Hope all you Southerners are having better weather.

first time the satellite has shutdown for hours in over 10 years, heavy wet snow,,, mostly melting but serious yuck

David, you missed his posts but Jim will have buff orphingtons hatching soon (if he got/gets the eggs)

2nd hatch in full swing, 2 Ameraucana chicks out (this proves fertility on my cockerel!) 5-6 olive eggers out, lots more pips might all be out day ahead of Easter

Jake has been watching a lot of tv lately he likes Swamp People,,,just showed me he too can be a squirrel dog acting all proud of himself after chasing a gray squirrel up a tree, then barking at it.

bbl time to section off the brooder

Did you look up fly babies in wis? I was going to order from them and they don't require 25 chicks. They are also in WI so less ship time on babies. Just an idea...

good morning,, notice ,,I said "good" ?

I just talked to the guy who was going to find some Buff Orpington hatching eggs for me.. well tomorrow I am going to Plover and picking up 10 dozen BO eggs..

David, you can quit looking for those BO's,, I can fill your order.. hens guaranteed..

It was raining here all day until a little while ago.. now we have snow.. I don't care,, I have eggs coming..

I was going to work on the pen roof today.. I did a couple of braces yesterday and it went really easy, even doing it by myself..

I decided to go and get some treated 2x4's and make a base for the pen.. I think that will stiffen the walls and make the whole coop set better on the sloped ground..

Unka Dan, is it necessary to have an opaque roof on a greenhouse ? I was thinking of steel..
it is quite a bit less $$$$ and it will last forever.. (my forever) ..

Annie found a box of thermometers for me.. the one I wanted was not in it, but there are plenty to choose from.. I am testing about 5 of them right now.. one is dead on.. I put a new battery on the digital, but haven't poked it into one of the bators, yet..

I guess my day is going to be just going to Menard's for 6 treated 2x4's..

Here is a mental image for you.. I am sitting here in my bathrobe and not even dressed yet..
