How to tell if your hen is broody:

She lays very flat..like a pancake
She stops laying
When you take her off she gets right back on and she stays on all night long
She sets for more than three days
She might growl at you or her normal behavior on the nest changes

I find that if I toss them off the nest three days in a row and she returns..she is going to stick

Well - I am sitting here bawling my eyes out. I knew something was wrong, so I candled the eggs. I pulled 16 of the 24. When I cracked them open it looked like 3 of them had maybe started, but the rest were just yolk. Nothing smelled bad- just warm yolks. I left in 8 that I couldn't be 100% sure on, but two of them are Ameraucana eggs, and I can't see in them. I am so upset. Like snot running down my face upset. I don't know what went wrong? I don't know what to tell the kids... No chicks for Easter, and they had been so looking forward to it. I don't know....

AWWWww so sorry to here this..... about the kiddos though, you could run to TSC and get chicks and just pretend they hatched overnight......?? Better luck next hatch, sometimes things just happen... and ya just can't explain..... I was very upset my first hatch 9 eggs 1 clear, 3 no pips, 5 chicks, I cried my butt off when i opened them to discover 3 fully formed dead chicks, I cried all day then buried them in the backyard by my dogs..... it was not fun so I feel for you........... :hugs ......Kim

Good evening everyone. Not a whole lots been going on , on my end so I've just been lurking. Sorry to hear about the losses and poor hatches, Good to hear about the good hatches. I hope everyone had a decent Easter as well. I'm on day 4 of my new hatch thanks to Jim :) Although I'm only 4 days in, it is sooooo much less stressful doing it his way. By now I normally would have been adjusting the temp a million times and freaking over the humidity. Now its easy peasy ;) . My mom, step-Dad, little brother, and little sister came up for the weekend. It was good to see them , its been two years for everyone except my mom. She comes up about every 6 months for a couple days. And of course I somehow come down with strep throat and ended up at urgent care Saturday night getting antibiotics. I've got my mom hooked on chicken and she even already has the perfect coop. Its an old cinderblock shed with a concrete floor and shelves built onto the back wall that could be turned into nest boxes. But , my step-dad still needs convincing lol. He'll give in eventually. They live on just under an acre and luckily are about 200 feet from city limits and the county allows poultry :) I'd say she will probubly have him saying yes by next summer. I've also been working on a new coop / pen plan. I want to seperate the ducks and chickens in seperate coops so the ducks can run free all day and the chickens be penned unless we let them out. I'm getting a bit tired of the chickens usling my porch railings as perches and pooping all over my porch. Plus my pen looks like junk since the netting over the top of it tore from the heavy snow and the sides are bent down from the weight of the netting and snow. Well other than all that, nothing new going on here. :) I hpe everyone has a great night.
Oh and my Happy Cackle Special is being delivered this week .

Evening all finally caught up with the posts......... sorry I haven't been around was a busy weekend for us with Easter, cooking and having 7 extra mouths to feed this year kept me very busy...
anyway not much new, I still hate Adams new job, and bawl every time he leaves............. he's out to MI again today.... at least he isn't gone 14 days at a time, I would have to be committed.....
waiting on my Back ordered bator, looking forward to hatching some chicks............ wish mother nature would hurry up with spring already, she is really weird this year had rain, snow clouds sun crazy Easter weather, and it was so nice the other day I even went out with only a sweatshirt to clean my coop...........arggg went out this am and wanted to swear !!!!!!!! BBBBBBrrrrrrrrr out there again.

CC so sorry about the kitty, but 20 years was a blessing, and aI'm sure he/she had a great life with you and lots of love.......... sending hugs :hugs

Jim...........Glad your coop project is going well, will be coming up to visit soon I hope anyway.......CassieD should be getting the chicks they estimated April 2nd ship date, awaiting a confirmation then will set up a day that works for everyone..... so do any days work better for you she wants to meet at your place so she can meet us both...... Hows my Rooster?? is he acting like a nice boy or a hellion? hope he's niice. Hansom has taken to trying to flog me if I don't have my normal winter coop attire on, not sure if he doesn't recognize me or if he's being roosterish.... he will find himself in my soup pot if the later is the case..... What do you think? he will be 2 this Summer and has never been aggressive before? he is usually a very good boy, my favorite roster to date.........spring hormones maybe?

Hi TerriO, glad the lp got delivered, and everything went well at your place recently, steak sandwiches sounded awful good to me.......

Irish ........cute new hens hope they get along well with everyone.....hows my girls doing? I miss my Peepers, she was always such a talker, and Betsies nice dark egg, and her 2 sisters are missing her too....... Suzie is getting picked on my a new feather picker, I seen tonight someone has her chest half plucked, Thought I got rid of my Feather picker, now I'm wondering if I have a new one or if Betsy was protecting her........ arggg gotta separate these guys to breeding pens so I can sort out who has to get the AX this year, and who is being sold or rehomed, before I get chicks marching all over the place.

So anyway can't remember much else ppl, will keep reading and posting when I can....hugs to all and Happy Belated Easter............ later peeps.........Kim

I still have a few chicks trying to hatch. I have a couple of chicks (pretty sure their polish) (not that I'm discriminating :) that are having eye issues. Like walking around with one or two eyes closed. So strange, never seen it before. I opened the closed eye and it's not stuck shut. It's inner lid retracts. I dont know what the heck is going on. I got to thinking if the one eyed one were to live it would have to be called pirate. But I'm not going to have a special needs bird right from the start. If something happened to a favorite, may be, but not from the beginning.

I gotta sleep. But I did get 2 lav ameracaunas that are actually lavender and not splits. What so strange is there are literally purple pin looking feathers mixed in with the grey. I noticed it when it was wet, but it's still there dry. Very pretty. Now watch... They'll both be Roos...

I have to get up the gumption to take care of some roosters. I hate doing it. I also am going to splash invermectin on my roo Babes legs. I think all the other birds are just getting their drops between the shoulder blades (do chickens even have shoulder blades???). I think they have mites or something.

Ok... Sleep calling....

Good evening--waiting for DH to get home with the peroxide...yup, Magic got the skunk while doing chores tonight! My eyes have finally stopped watering--she is locked in the bathroom. Gotta look up the method for the peroxide and baking soda. Dh was worried it would bleach her HAIR! Who cares as long as it gets rid of the SMELL! Cripes!

you look at her when she is in the nest,, if she is facing to the left, broody.. if she is facing to the right, not broody,, if she is facing either to the front or the rear, she can't make up her mind..

and remember this,, today is April 1 .........
Oh yes...more material for THE BOOK! LOL! I sure hope your other post was an April Fool too...the one were you said you werent going to post any more. Lighten up folks...this is for FUN--remember?

Welcome back Kim! I can certainly see why you have been busy! Did you finally get to order the Brin20 or did you go right for the Brin48? Or maybe larger???? Soon you will be hatching just like your buddy Jim! No kidding about the weather today! BUT--the sap is running!

OK--I have pushed off the inevitable long enough....gotta wash that dog.
