Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Mel-I hope you and your kids stay healthy after your outdoor wirk yesterday. (As well as all chicks surviving)

Ok chick fanatics. ...F&F has a puppy tent that would be perfect for traveling with chickens, separation of all ages, etc. Check it out! Its in their current sales add for animals.

Sooooo- they are saying we are in and ice storm warning and power outages are likely. What do I do about my 5day old and 7day old duckling and chicks? And what about the incubator? If the power goes out that also means that I have no water.....Getting pretty nervous

Judge~ Here's a trick I used when I lived on my farm outside of Clintonville. When I knew a storm was coming (or a really cold night these would go into the bed w/the kids) I put cinder bricks in the oven to stay hot. When you take them out, wrap in a light towel and plop in with the chickies. You could also put one or two in the box with the bator. You will really be surprised how long a brick will hold heat!!!

Now I had better get outside and grab a few bricks for myself. With this wind I doubt we will keep power when the snow starts

and I'll put the bricks into the coop if necessary. We have 2 generators and a fireplace so the house isn't a concern, or the chicks, I can just move them into a carrier and move them into the livingroom if necessary, but I want to be able to add a little heat to the coop if needed w/o hooking it up to one of the generators.
We may not need the generators for another winter!!! After a study was done the power company/state determined we are the most at risk area in the entire state for power outages, especially those lasting more than 6 hours, (no kidding folks) so they are supposed to start work this year on replacing/burying lines in the entire area. Saying it will take more than a year to complete. Hope they don't cause too many outages in the process.

Well better get off here and take care of my critters. Oh, and my hubby too

It's his birthday

He's more excited about it being the first day of the Master's! Men.

The bus was late at the bus stop and being a nice person that I am, I gave my umbrella to the younger kids whose parents dropped them at the bus stop with no raincoat or umbrella as it dripped and the wind blew. Now I am still wet an hour later and cant seem to warm up. My office is usually chilly but seems really cold today. Yuck.

Well my friend and her three young daughters came over(in their stinking cute new overalls) to pick out their chicks last night. They took 11 2 week olds home and were so cute with them. they were going to take 12 but my sone got seperation anxiety and had to grab one more out of the bin...so we are keeping 9.
2 polish
2BCM(pretty positive one is a roo)
2 cherry egger/rock (pretty sure one is a roo)
An olive egger with big fluffy muffs
An easter egger looks like a hawk
A white rock

so of the 9, two are at least roos... hoping for a nice one. I need a pretty nice pair for 4h for next year when my kids can start showing. just need to find the perfect breed.

ok well interview tomorrow... second interview at another place on Monday... so there is progress. Still dont have an end date for current job. Still want to partially not work for three months... sigh. And I have to decide what I am doing by next week and register kids for park and rec stuff. (swimming and coach pitch). They start swimming through school and the YMCA today... After school, they get bussed down to the Y and bussed back to school when done. I am really nervous. my ds..yes the adhd one, had a bad experience when he was about 4 at swim lessons where he fell off a platform the teacher put them on in deeper water while he was swimming other kids out to it. He was fidgeting (go figure) and fell off and was under for a while. So he is pretty scared of water. I had a friend growing up whose brother almost drowned and was medically incapacitated from it, so my kids are learning to swim!!! So this is a tough one where I cant be there watching him to make sure he is ok. strong momma day! Might need a drink later. yikes... ok back to work,....sigh

Day not startign out well. Went to be it was getting cold in here. Woke up and it was even colder !!!! First thing we thought of was that there was something wrong with the furnace living in a chicken dust ridden house !!!!

Hubby went to check our tank..... Empty. So I had to call for more gas. The driver called and Yelled at me.... This is the second time this has happened this year !!!!!!

Well EXCUSE ME !!! I told him I wasn't home in January and we had the tank filled. Didn't think we would run out.... He said it's been a cold winter everyone is using alot of gas !!!!

I had no choice. I pulled out the peg leg card and told him that I wasn't the one stomping through the snow to check it and that we are city folk that aren't used to running out of fuel !!!

Driver must have a bug up his ***** today !!! Geez. I hear that he is out there already. Thank goodness he was in the area. It cost us $75 extra last time because they had to make an extra trip charge.
Only getting 150gallons this time... Sure hope it warms up soon. $1.49 a gallon..... They said it should get cheaper in June July. Just what I want to be doing in July.... Paying for HEAT !!!

Ok, now I"m off to get ready for my trip to Wausau to the doc appt then to pick up chicks for his boss. Of course I can't find the paperwork I was suppose to mail in to the clinic (new patient) guess I;ll blame it on the PO or my short term memory loss that I'll be complaining about.... if I remember.

Jim, I knew you wouldn't be going without !!!! You'd miss out on all of the weekend fun !!! I llike the crap table chick fetcher idea. Like a mini shepards hook.

Wonder if my pigs are attacking the driver. My Choc Lab is having a barking fit. geez Never a dull moment. Now the phone is ringing... Perfect timing all the way around here as I sit in my PJ's and should be getting ready.

Ok, by for now, hope the roads are ok.

Good sopping wet morning! I think my house may float away if this continues as long as they say...what the heck? Rain turning to snow tomorrow and then snow turning to rain by Sunday? It has been doing this for nearly a week now! How come every time I see Deli there is snow? The very first time I went to her house was the first snow of the year...we must be cursed!

I hear ya about that nasty wind too! It sounded like wolves at the door last night with all the howling! I let one of the dogs sleep up in bed with me...the one that barks in the morning. Guess what? I got to sleep until 8 with no barking! Then we stayed in bed until 8:30 and she was good as gold! Too bad she is generally so dirty from "helping" me around the farm or I would let her sleep upstairs every night. She didnt hog the bed either!

My parrot ticked me off this morning. He lunged at me while I was trying to get his fresh water into his cage. I surprised him---threw the water in his face and closed the door! He is trying to make it up to me now...weaving around and talking at me. He can wait! I hate when he does that!
The quail are doing great. I still have them in the tub in the LR. The kids like to watch their shadows on the sides of the tub. I wish Tommy was outside already so I could set up the chick TV--a lot more fun to actually see them!
More coffee is necessary....BRB.

Kinda chilly in here today. That North/East wind gets right in I think. I am glad I didnt take down the plastic in here. Bad enough that I took it down (of course on the North and East windows) in the barn last week instead of restapling the ends...I might just have to put it back up!

Last night I stayed up until 1:30 talking on the phone to Judi! She is all bent out of shape because of the possible weather conditions in the next few days! Worried like "anxiety attack" worried. Dont really get that. Even if we got a foot of snow it doesnt last real long this late in the year!
Jim...I chickled when you said you didnt want to be without your computer for the weekend! Does that mean you would miss us?

hugs.gif
What a sweetheart you are! You better watch out for BigFam though, and that psychic connection! So what were you doing up so late anyhow Heather? Dont you have to go to work in the morning?

I forgot to say that my last batch of syrup turned out the best! I got 3 small batches and ended up with 3 pints and 6 half pints of finished product. Plus a container in the fridge of the "extra." Not bad for a first year...And H&R and JJ--thanks for all the hand holding help you provided! Next year I promise I wont have so many questions!

Well, I am having a strange craving for some chili-cheese nachos...kinda weird for breakfast hey? I wonder how well it will go with coffee?

Later all--try and stay dry! TerriO

Well here's what I know about white Marans so far

They are pearl white

half have feathered shanks

and they are not camera shy

Neither are the quail

Speaking of quail... TerriO I am bringing the first 4 with me Saturday to go home with you.

The other 5 are not travel ready just yet.
