Oh, it's been a busy day. I am currently catching up on the gabber that I missed while at work.

I bought a new heat lamp this morning on the way to work for the Lav Orps that I'm bringing home from CC's tomorrow and its a GOOD thing that I did. Tonight I was cleaning out the grow out area of the coop that has the 5 Easter Hatch chicks in it. You know scraping poop, filling water, getting fresh food, etc. when I heard what sounded a bit like glass cracking. I looked up into the heat lamp and it appeared to have a pit in it (you know when a rock hits the windshield and it gets a pit right before the spider veins/cracking spreads throughout the entire windshield?), yeah that kind of pit. I also had noticed that they needed to have their zip ties changed. So I gathered all of the babies (kicking and screaming) into a box and brought them into the basement. While DH got the zip ties ready, I unplugged the lamp to let it cool, we changed the ties (some were too tight for my comfort), I put in the new bulb, and brought the chicks back outside. I got the old heat lamp to examine it and not only did it have a small pit on the bulb side (red portion that is closest to chicks), but it also had a lot of blackened area where it screws in (like burnt out bulbs get). Phew! That was a close call! I could have woken up to one of two situations: a fire or dead, cold birds! I am gonna continue to check on it prior to heading off to bed.

One thing that I did notice while examining the 5 babies is that my BLRW has cross beak (or whatever it is called). It is barely off center, but I suspect that she'll need to be culled, right? Or is this something that she'll might outgrow?

Either way she is fine for now. But that was a disappointment. Also, I am even more sure that one of the splash BLRW is a roo. In a side by side comparison to the other splash BLRW, he is taller, more upright, and has a redder comb and waddle area.

In addition to this adventure, while I was out tending to the above 2 paragraphs, the area just under my left eye started to itch, but seeing that I was cleaning bird poo, I didn't touch it. When I had finished everything and washed my hands, I looked in the mirror and it looks like I got bit by something. Just a precaution, I washed my face real well. The itching stopped, but so far the swelling is still enough to look like an insect bite.

Ok, I'm going back to reading.

cs, I've had heat bulbs get that darkened area on the threads prior to burning out. It happens, but I've never had a fire start because of it. It just happens sometimes.

Good thing you noticed before it burned out so your babes didn't have a cold evening.

And if you can "just barely" notice the crossbeak in your chick, then it isn't a reason to cull her. If she can eat ok, don't worry about it. Just MHO.

BBP, I'm glad your mallard came home. Hopefully the calls will be too.

Bigfam, like you don't have enough eggs to hatch?????

LAB=Lactic Acid Bacteria or lacto-fermation; basically LAB is using lacto based like yogurt, pickles, sauerkraut versus alcohol fermentation which uses ACV.

CC- I know that you don't want us to bring animals, but do you want us to bring anything? If the "cross beak" can stay and doesn't require a cull, then she gets a twisted name. Anyone have ideas? She has the best personality of them all. Very sweet, quiet, and calm.

BBP- give it some time. Miss Mallard came home, maybe the drakes will too.
