The only Salatin book they had there was his newest one, "Folks, This Ain't Normal". I grabbed it too, read the first chapter so far. It's about how the new societal 'normal' is bored kids playing video games all day and people completely disconnected from their food and families. He suggests getting back to honest physical work, producing healthy food, and encouraging kids to take pride in a job well done from an early age would go a long way in helping bring our society back from its degeneration. I can toast to that.

I need to pick up his Pastured Poultry and Family Friendly Farming books too.

Happy Belated Bday Judge!
Sounds like a great book!
Quote: X2 on every thing..

JJ,
I was trying to copy your plant in a bale of hay and did some reading about it. The rain helped for a few days, and the day I was getting it ready to add another bale, the DH shouts from the house to feed him..he will simply die any second and no he can't wait till I lock up birds. I came back to this in less than an hour.

Storky has 8 hatched so far. I gave her 10 eggs but someone must have sneaked in there and laid 2 more because there are 4 left, 3 are dark, I only gave her 2 dark. Quite a barnyard mix of colors in what hatched so far.

C U all later

OHHHH NOOOOOOO!!!

I was telling Jim that hay may not be as goood as straw for the planting thing.

What were you using for fertilizer? will it harm the birds?

Maybe try again in the house where there are no chickens(sorry, I had to say it)

Oops..not bale of hay...it was straw I used

lol..it was so funny I had to take a picture..they were having such a good time..and no..I never used any chemicals on my place. I try to do organic as much as i can..no weed control other than the birds.

Just lost a long post, too tired to retype. So I'M BAACCKK. Oh stop cringing. Maybe tomorrow I'll try again. But I do have to tell ya Peatwo taught me something today. I did not know that Golden Plump had paratroopers. I was in the garage and heard him throwing a fit and all the hens were running for the coop. I ran outside and looked, here was a hellium bithday balloon drifting down into the yard.

127 posts to read so I'm going to post real quick while I read.

I'm looking for a new Rooster. DH likes the brown leghorn look. It doesnt have to be pure bred, he just wants the colors like the brown leghorn with the big tail. So, if your near Necedah (he wont let me drive far just for a chicken lol ) I'm looking. I'd be willing to trade a pair of White Cochins ( male, 11 mo old / female pair, 1 yr old), or a laying hen. I have a Silver Lakenvelder, Ancona, and a Splash Andalusian, Golden Lakenvelder to pick from.

Thanks

Well looks like I missed Star Wars day , oh darn lol I 'm more of a Star Trek person myself.

Judge - Happy Belated Birthday :)

BigZ - cute chicks and fat kitty

Cindy- Congrats on the babies

Delish - I just kicked out the last of my babies. I had the 2 turkey poults , 2 goslings, and 2 ducklings inside but luckily this weather cooperated :) As for adult birds in the house, no way.

Jim - I cant even imagine how many chicks you have if they go thru 2 gallons a day. , and I never would have though to do that to a barrel to make nest boxes, very creative !

Dr. H - Welcome Back !

Ok, well reading is done. We've had a heck of a couple days here. The hot water heater went out. The pressure gauge broke and it started spuing water and rust, and a screw snapped and was blown into the drywall and the top of the water heater buldged out. It must have been leaking for a while, the floor in the closet was ruined, part of the kids room floor that ran along the wall and the area where the washing machine is . All of it had to be torn up and replaced. So yeah it was not fun. And of course I just paid to sign my DS up for t-ball and oldest DD up for softball.

Well I'm ready for a shower, I hope everyone has a nice night.

Good evening! Tough luck on that water heater Apyl--sounds like it was quite the mess! I have lots of really cool looking roos here...normally we go to the Castle Rock trails for Mother's Day but not this year...are you going to the bash? I can post some pics of the available if you like.
Happy belated birthday Judge!
I had a broody hatch 4 yesterday too! No pics yet. There were 2 eggs left and for the life of me I couldnt tell if they bobbed in the water...I popped them into the bator just in case. There was a 5th that was so adorable but DOA.

The broody with the 2 is still herding them in to the milk house at night but she is liking attention from the roo so I guess she will be starting on her second batch soon. I have a few birds that end up doing 4 batches a summer!
The ducks are laying like crazy now and on,y 2 are sitting. one nest must have 3 dozen eggs in it! I sole 6 dozen "bardyard special" hatching eggs today as a result of my CL ad. I have many folks on the list for ducks and geese when they hatch. I am thinking that the geese should be any day now.
I got the garden mostly cleared and burned the veggie stems. Now to spread the new compost/topsoil and get it all tilled in...this year I promis to put the garden to bed in the fall! (someone please remind me!)
BL4 that present is quite original! I bet the couple will love the wrapping--I especially like the champagne glasses!
Well, I need to make the side to go along with our roasted (HomeGrown) chicken tonight...better get at it. I am going to pick some spears of asparagus too! (and since no one would help in the garden I just might eat it all myself...maybe the chicken too!)
