Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

here is the roo that thinks he can get the better of me.. If I didn't need his sperm, he would be in freezer camp as of yesterday.. he is just 1 yr old,, from MMcM stock..

this is the small peacock.. (the big one is about 2 feet wider @ 9 feet wide) this is my view from the lawn chair as I am drinking my cuppa and talking to UnkaDan.. the peacock pen is in the background..
the guinea hen is the background wasn't impressed..
as always, click on the picture to enlarge.. it is worth the effort..

Cassie, when are your chicks due to arrive ? I thought in April ?? Stromberg's had mine here is less than 2 weeks..

so far only 5 of the 100 have croaked..

I have to clean out the coop they are in so when I turn them loose on the floor, they won't bump their heads on the ceiling.. I took deep litter to new heights this winter..

DrH, glad you are back with us.. I was gone for awhile, also.. what would they do without us old f@rts ??

I got one turkey egg and 3 chicken eggs from the new nest box yesterday.. I am going to start collecting the chicken eggs for hatching in a couple more days.. that roo better not be shooting blanks if he knows what is good for himself..

Annie found a guinea nest while cleaning up some debris around the house.. 11 eggs for the incubator,, and now they have moved the nest, so we go nest hunting again ,, I have to get the dog kennel straightened up and get those guineas into it.. hmmmm, maybe THAT will be my main project for today.. anything to avoid cleaning out the coops..eh?

PlychoCh, an Aurocana is a pure breed colored egg layer,, I understand they can lay different colored eggs.. an Ameraucana is a cross breed and usually lays blue eggs.. I have hatched quite a few of the latter, but never intentionally raised any..
Easteregger covers all chickens who lay colored eggs.. it is not a breed, more of a description..

You can prolly find a better deal on a bator than at F&F.. you have time to shop around.. Just don't let anybody try to convince you that Little Giants, and Hovabators are no good.. when the time comes, I can help you set either one up for great hatches..

Good morning all good peeps!
My son started a new job today and since he doesnt have his license secured yer=t I have to drive him to Madison and pick him up to take him to his afternoon job! Just what I needed, something else to take up my time! At least for this first day I wont be taking the little ones along...I wanted to run my tiller all day though! Expanding the garden again!

Poor kitty cuties! I am glad that you feel like I do though! I cant understand the "it's just a cat!" mentality myself. Glad you could find a reasonable vet.
Bifam--my Moom always used to say, "I let your Dad watch you guys for a few minutes and something always happens!" My brother broke both his front teeth in an upside down V when he was 9 too. The dentist glued some kind of temporary thing on them (you couldnt tell) and said they would cap them when he was out of HS because of wrestling, football, being a boy etc. They were playing Army and my other brother's helmet fell off of his heat and onto his face when he bent over! This time a true accident!
I am on day 17 for my Cot quail today...gotta get down there and check them.
I had lots more to say, as usual, but dont remember...
Welcome Psycho (how's that for a nick?) IT was nice talking to you on the phone last night! I hope you chime in often!
Great pic of that peacock JIm...I sorta miss mine...at least the cars slowed down when he was up near the road!
Gotta run--much work to do!

What a beautiful day yesterday! I am SO happy the weather cleared up and the sun came out! A lovely day for a wedding.

Met up with Amyable and Julie at the Natural Food Expo in Oshkosh; we were treated to a lovely presentation by Joel Salatin (and of course I picked up his book). I was hoping he would be there in his 'normal' attire of straw hat and bibs, he looks quite different in a sportcoat and a tie! I was only able to stay for one of his talks unfortunately.....

Anyway, pis of the present!

This is what happens when you work with science geeks....

Happy Monday everyone. Here's hoping for a nice normal Spring week! Catching up on things here after a few quite hectic days up here! We had a big ***** SNOW storm here that messed with my week! Kids had no school on Thurs, We had NO power from Thurs at 9am until Friday at 6pm... bbrr.. chicks did ok, they are no worse for the wear. Lots of trees down and had to do some coop repair. During the outage, I was supposed to be getting ready for 35 people coming over for dinner and a confirmation celebration..............well, it got done and it all went awesome, but could have done without a few of the obsticals!

Welcome Psycopeep

Judge. Happy Belated Birthday, hope your son is ok

HOWEVER :) I have been knows to raise sick calves in our basement... (it isn't finished yet) .. now i have 22 chicks down there lol.. He spas's out over the dogs in the house and the basement, but I just kinda listen, don't argue and just do what i want

Umm...okay...so, yep! Psychodelic Peepazoid, here. Wat up? Kay. I'm new to chickies, as in, only had 'em 2 weeks and 1 day. N'er had 'em before in my whoooole life! Won't tell ya how long THAT is just cuz, well, you know, a woman never tells her age dontcha know? XD

Anywhozit! I was having issues and lost a bunch, but now everything's under control and the remaining ones are doing super! I do intend to get more, but wanted to wait it out and make sure I could figure out what I was doing w/these guys first and get them stabilized and whatnot first. While I'm not against buying day olds, I sure wouldn't mind a few older ones so I can have some eggs right away, even if it's only sporadic. I don't care. I've had a few peeps suggest buying eggs, but I'm not set up for that yet. I know I can get cheap incubaters at Farm & Fleet, but I need to use the money I'd be spending on that to make sure I've got a coop and/or run for the ones I've already got, first.

Ahh, let's see ~ what else shall I say? Kay, how about this? I have: 1 buff laced Polish, 2 gold laced Polish, 1 mottled Houdan, 2 Amerecaunas (Easter Eggers? What's the difference?), 1 Amerecauna/buff Cochin mix, 1 white bantam Cochin, 1 black frizzle bantam Cochin, & 1 black Silkie. All straight runs, so I haven't a clue what I've got. BUT! My white bantam Cochin keeps flying at everyone doing chest bumps and is bigger than the frizzle. Not sure if they're the exact same age, they could be days apart, but someone told me that could be a sign of it being a roo. That and the fact it's bigger. All of my chicks are between 2 12/ to 3 1/2 wks old.

I live in central WI near the Dells, I'm married to a Marine (former Marine, he's out now), been married 15+ yrs and together nearly 18 yrs, and I have 6 kids (5 alive & 1 angel) and 1 grandkid. I used to raise rabbits, just got rid of the last one a few days ago, and have 1 Saint Bernard and 1 Alapaha Blueblood Bulldog.
When you say you need egg layers, You are not kiddin. Most of those breeds are not known for being reliable layers.

the children's museum was not selling eggs... I agreed to let them show off some chicks I ordered through them for 6 weeks so the kids could get to pet a chick.

I brought them home and they are Cukoo Marans 2 hens and an unintended roo. They are half as big as the 3 EE and 2 SLW and 4White Marans I have that are the same age, and the pipsqueeks imediately start bullying all the others. The roo was the worst. I say was because I gave him an attitude ajustment by holing him upside down and showing him to all the other chicks. This embarrasment has fixed him for now. I have had it work on full grown roos before. Must say I am suprised how well it worked with the 6 week old.

Good afternoon!

Judge, so sorry about your son. Mine races motorcross and I swear the anxiety killed me. He has broken his tibia and his foot in different wrecks and watching makes me insane. I hope he feels better soon!

Poor kitty! Good on you for saving it. I would have done the same thing. I love kitties...and dogs...and chickens...and horses...and... Ok I'd save anything.

I have more eggs on day 20! Sold 7 extra hatchery chickens, yay. Only 6 or 7 left to sell and my numbers will be good to allow more chickens of better quality.

Here are a couple gratuitous chick pictures for you....

Black Langshans...the little fuzz butts are going to their new home tonight.

This is Muffin Head (Blue Langshan), and Q-tip. Qtip is a little blue silkie came home with me the other day. I couldn't resist the cuteness... Keeping these two.

Have a great day and try to enjoy the AMAZING weather!!

Looking for Chicks, supplies etc. in the SE wisconsin area? Check out Merton Feed Mill... they have tons of chicks, many kinds. Great supplies and great prices. Plus you get to shop locally and support a small business.
They have a great FB page too! Just love them.

Thanks for the welcomes, all! Yes, Terri O! Very nice to talk to you on the phone! You seem like a wonderfully fun person to get to know and I hope we can meet up some time in the upcoming months! :D

Whether my chickies are known for being good layers or not, they'll be good for practice. I've never owned chickens before and noone in my family has, nor have I been friends w/anyone who has. Well, maybe, but not to the point where they talked about them all the time and I started learning stuff from them and/or went to see them. Anywhozit - I don't care as much 'for production' as I do 'for the fun of it'. So I'd much rather get what attracts me. Savvy? So the ones that are really catching my eye are the standard & bantam cochins, spangled (or is it speckled?) sussex, polish, easter eggers, shamos or malays, mille fleurs, turkens, show girls, spitzhaubens, and maybe siapan jungle fowl or red indian jungle fowl. Those are the breeds I have the most interest in. Now, whether or not I own half those breeds is another thing, LOL!

I'm also interested in Button Quail, for ducks I like the Buff and Anconas the best (may consider another type of magpie look?), maybe Cayugas. And I like Sebastopol and Chineese Geese. Wouldn't mind a breeding pr of each of the geese and ducks. Considering a turkey, like maybe a Royal Palm. But I realize I can't get everything at once, so it's all just a matter of who has what and when and how much I have to spend "in that moment" that will determine what I bring in next. There's a feed mill not far from me where I can order almost everything I want, but IDK how long the waiting list'll be. Some things he may have in the next shipment, some things I may have to wait until June or even August for. If that's the case then I don't even want to order it b/c I'll probably forget I placed the order and pick something up "on the spot" when I'm at a breeders house or at a swap meet. LOL!
