Jim... It's kinda sexy when you talk thermostats and fans.

Hey, do you have any goose knowledge to impart to me to keep George happy and healthy? I wanted to coop him with the chickens and ducks. Any treats that geese like in particular? At what point can I tell male or female?

OK, first things first: thermostat,, fan,, heating element.. that should hold you for awhile..

I cannot tell sex of geese until they are full grown.. then there are things to look for, and listen to.
the goose should have a low hanging rudder.. the male is flatter between the legs.. sometimes hard to tell if there are not two to compare.. the female's relaxed voice is lower keyed,, the male tends to have a sharp crescendo.. when mating, the male is always on top..

our geese like bread for treats.. they will eat cracked corn, or whole corn in preference to other grains.. also they love young plants from the veggie garden or flower garden.. 5 geese can surround a 10 pound head of cabbage in the garden and devour it in minutes.. we do not have any small children around here,, IDK if that is coincidence, or if the geese got them..

Update:

The hen is doing great. She ate a bunch of corn, pasta noodles, yogurt, and she also drank a lot of water. Doing amazing. So happy

Good sopping wet morning to all! THe sun is making an appearance! Perhaps it will dry out some of the muck! Yes CC, I fear we would have lost you in it on the tour.
JJ--she did wrap that hay up and cover it with another tarp for good measure. I am glad cause we must have gotten another 1.5 to 2" of rain between last night and about an hour ago. T-storms all night! But my hay is in!

Now I only have to do this about 6 more times before September and I will be set for the winter.

HMMM...anybody wanna buy a horse?

I am glad that everyone had a good time last night...I did too. The good thing about chicken folk is that they arent judgmental!


I am taking my friend to the doc this morning so I better git. Been up since 7:30 but lazing around here...

This is just my opinion..

I use all flock chick starter for all my fermentation. Everyone gets the same thing. I do not buy layer at all...ever. I save my money and give free choice grit and oysters. I offer fresh herbs instead of the additional additives in layer feed. Layer feed is hard on male birds and ducks. Layer feed is manufactured for an all in and all out operation. One year on layer will not hurt anyone.It is the build up that can be destructive. I keep may males for more than one year and I do not want fertility issues. I never have and hope I never will. It can give kidney issues and decrease fertility. Everyone can eat chick starter with out any side effects or health issues.
Some pellets have glue added to bind them. It is not a good reactor in fermentation. If your pellets are glue free, they are great to use in FF. You can also ferment scratch grains.
