Yes.

Here I am, thinking I'm going off the rails with this "hybrid" style, when I'm just writing 3rd person close.

Classic me, everybody.

Ok, here you go. Not really a list I was thinking of, but it covers it. It's from Point of View by Marcy Kennedy (Yes... I have a chicken named after this author... don't judge). It gives an example, which I tend to find easiest to learn from. These are all third person. (I'm thinking there was a clearer list somewhere, but I'm not sure which book it was in. I thought it was this one.)

For those of you that use 3rd person close, do you write the thoughts of the character in italics, or do you work it into the text? For example…

NC_Quail looked at the sky. Thick black clouds were approaching. It’s going to rain, she thought.

Vs…

NC_Quail looked up at the sky. Thick black clouds were approaching. It was probably going to rain.

Are you opinionated one way or the other?

I like the first one. The first one also sounds like something Clouds would write.
