Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

French ... Shadow is a male standard poodle. I actually just had him at his breeders place yesterday for training. Seeing him compared to his mom, a sibling, and other poodles was fun. Also rather eye opening because his dad is a large 70 lb standard. After seeing Shadow at 7 mo. And having to pick him up, she's pretty sure he's going to be 70-75 lbs. That's a whole lot of poodle! Here's her website if you want to see where Shadow came from www.puddlejumperpuppies.com

Once. Again thanks to all for your input! Would love to hear more on how you northerners do your FF. Most other sites I've checked the flock keepers don't seem to have to deal with our weather. BTW- Delisha, my girls free range, sort of. They have their run who's gate opens out into a larger area we have fenced in around our herb garden up to the back porch. We also have movable fencing that we use to expand the area out the two gates so they can "free range" but in a safe, controlled environment.

Rain again here this morning so another good crop of blood suckers, sigh. Boy the rhubarb spray really did the job on the massive aphid problem in the greenhouse. Now when it stops raining I better go see what mildew I have to deal with in the garden. DELISHA, so sorry your garden is under water.

Time for another cuppa

Good morning all!
Love seeing all the puppy pictures. Two poodles- love it. I would love a poodle, but not until Judge is gone.
All is well with the animals. Mary is still sitting tight on her eggs. The fecal sample that the vet took on Thursday isn't back yoet, but the vet gave me a big bottle of dewormer for the ducks and goats. It starts with and A-R.... argon? Ardon? Arbon? I dontknow. 3cc for each goat orally and 20cc in the baby pool for the ducks. I am afraid I won't be able to deworm the chickens before I leave.
Been shopping and packing the last few days.
We are going "up north" for a week with my parents and brother and sisters and in laws and kids. Way up to Glidden in Ashland County. I absolutely LOVE the area. So peaceful and quiet. We spend the week hanging out. having bonfires, going to the lakes, taking rides to see if we see any animals, there is a parade and fireworks too.
My parents have a second home there, and so do my two uncles, so there will be all the cousins and their kids up there too.
With all the talk about tourists I'm starting to feel guilty, but I guess we aren't really tourists. My mom grew up there, and when my parents could, they bought another house there so they could enjoy the area again. Not sure I would consider Glidden a tourist area though. But maybe it is just the north in general that attracts people?
I hate the drive though. 4 hours to get up there with 4 kids. Yuck.

Deli, sorry you're under water. That stinks! And how does Kendra do it? I pick sexed pullets and I STILL pick a roo! Lolololol !!!

I might have said it already, but Riga has 3 chicks. I think the last egg is a no hatcher but will give it one more day. But Riga has been off the nest and was out begging for treats this morning!!!! So happy to see her returning to herself a bit. And last night I pulled her off the nest to see what was in there. She was a great momma and ate the egg shells cleaning up the nest. Then she very gentled pecked at babies to get back under her so the strange lady could stop staring at them. Then they scooted right under her as she was pleased as punch!

way back when I worked for GTE, Glidden was one of our exchanges.. I always enjoyed that area.. It is so "wild" yet.. the drive is worth the peace and quiet,, We used to drive way up there and camped out for deer hunting.. until we found a nice area closer to home..

I changed my Peacock ad on Craigs List.. too many people are contacting me with rediculously low offers for the pair I have left.. Now I have bargaining room built in..

looks like the rain is finally starting to lighten up.. as soon as it quits, I am up on the GH roof.

Frenchie, yes there are some days that I just veg out...... when I have the time! No I am not seriously looking for a horse, I just enjoy torturing myself looking at what is out there. As far as tourists go there are snotty people everywhere, even from WI. I have had to deal with my fair share. I live near the Chain of Lakes and we get our fair share. Off to work, then 3 days off!

Whatever will I do? Cleaning the house might not be a bad idea........
Why don't we figure out a time to get together and you could visit me and my horses. I haven't ridden at all this year yet. My older gelding is pretty safe and very fun to ride! The younger ones need some tuning up after long breaks. I have been traveling for 7 years hard and they just haven't gotten the riding they need. They are very respectful and sweet though.

morning folks,

still off and on showers here, cooler but the ground is definitely soaked

Glidden is some of the true backwoods of WI,,,,great bear country and grouse hunting,,,nice area

vickie you asked,,,I ferment a bit differently, like to use whole grains. I try to use the scratch from Townline Feeds in Bryandt,,,,good stuff. A mix of coarse cracked corn, oats, and wheat, to this I add 5-10% BOSS(adds oils and fat),,,,and a cup of Calf Manna Pro(bumps the protein a bit and adds xtra "stuff"). I use a 5 gallon bucket and fill about 2/3rds full,,,top with water to cover and when going for LABS I add a bit of cheese makers activator. Last winter feeding 40+ birds I kept this bucket going in the basement,,,use a strainer and remove about half of the mix,,,,a pan offered in each of the 2 coops 1st thing in the morning. Replace what was used and stir. It kept going all winter. I also have layer crumbles (dry) offered in the coop at all times, as well as fresh water (also in the coop) The birds hit the soaked grains and they are gone in less than 20 minutes,,,,no freezing. With the soaked grains I find the birds use very little water,,a plus during the winter here. I also think that this blend along with the regular offering of complete feed fulfills the needs, my birds moult fast and usually have a nice sheen year round. I am going to find a way to add some meat protein to this diet but it takes some effort and planning to get that added here,,,,still working on it.

I don't think birds and layers especially should ever be without fresh water, hence I always have water in the coops (birds are up at 4am, me not always),,,just my way to do things.

ok,,,back to work and hoping to not get too wet too many times today

Good Morning...

All this talk about FF and LABS makes me think I should try it.

So need to ask for the links again for the FF and LABS recipes...

Hey UNK, Care to share your measurements of the Mana Pro and other stuff you put into yours please? I'm headed to Townline Monday, might pick up a bag of the scratch and try it...
What about using their regular layer mix ? I have mine custom mixed, that would work too hey?

Ok, now... fair is fair.... Now I wanna know what the FIBS ... I mean IL residents think about us Cheeseheads... I mean WI people? How do we behave when we are stomping on their grounds?

And as far as picking up trash on the road..... there are plenty of beer cans, soda cans, wrappers and beer cartons along my gravel road.... and I have not seen any Illinosians up here.....think it's the hillbillys !!! lol

Ducks survived their first night out..... Puppy is sprawled out laying half on ET's pillow with her head on Butts back... Butt dog is on ET's pillow.... me I have a stiff neck cause Puppy has decided she liked sleeping on my pillow last night so I basically "slept funny"...

ummm, Sandi re-read my post I did breakdown the added materials,,,,

maybe this will clear the original mud

I have a large metal scoop holds about 4 lbs of the scratch feed,,,this is a bit more than my strainer holds,,,so,,,,4 scoops to an empty bucket,,,then 5-10% boss,,,,that I eyeball,,,,I add the 1/2 cup of Mana Pro when transferring to the pan usually, sometimes I dump it in the bucket. I use the cheese maker starter because it was cheaper and easier to find/get/and store than other items mentioned,,,,(limited shopping experience in the north woods) remember you always want to leave half of your mix in the bucket to keep the whole fermenting thing going,,,,

I'm sure the layer mix would work,,,,even with the couple of adds mine works out to less and $22/hundred and I really think there are benefits to the whole grains,,,,,and they drain nice for winter use,,,no heated coops here
