Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Jim - your mom's Apple butter probably had cloves in it. I make most mine very basic because I adjust the spices etc. Later for whatever I'm using it in. I use mine to make rollovers, Apple spice cake, Autumn bread, muffins, etc. I make a separate batch of 20 jars or so with a little brown sugar and extra cinnamon for using as a spread on biscuits, pancakes.....

Whoever asked, you do wild grape butter basically the same way. A good concord grape juice, the grapes and cook away. Trick with the pear butter , cook skins and all and add just a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg ( think spiced pears) . For extra sweetness and a little more flavor, I cook it down with a bit of Apple juice.

evening, just sitting down to a quick meal. We are now in full swing for the fair- DD and DS(11) had archery this afternoon- 1st year for both of them, they both did well and had fun- we won't get the results until sometime next week during fair. Tomorrow DS(8) plays 2 baseball games and we have to start washing the chickens and turkeys that DD will be showing. 6 chickens total which will be easy enough to get through and 4 turkeys- this should be interesting as DH will not be helping us this year- he will be attending his cousin's funeral. DD came up with the idea of using a small pool so we can walk the turkeys out and they can step into it- hopefully it will work as I don't think I will be able to lift them into the tub.

Hope everyone has a good weekend

Picked strawberries at Thompsons this morning and made 12 pt's of jam. That should keep Joe happy. He loves the stuff and can eat half a jar in a day.

Joe faces the painting and my back is to it. I do not think he even sees it or notices things unless he does not like it. I have a nice oil painting and I finally got to hang it last month. He relented because his daughter said she loved it. He tried to talk me into giving it to her...lol
busy week on the cheeseheads, strawberry sweetness, goop, drool, various butters, salves, sneezy/wheezy/snotiness, sick chicks, broken ducks, broken roosters, quack doctors, whoopa$$, ppl sleeping in banks, geese vanishing, cats pi$$ing, I'm sure there was more I just catch the highlites

Mel if you find that quack Dr, ask him to put the charges on your bill!

bbl I need to check my bucket of gooey sweetness

Well, with all of this rib talk, I'd like to chime in that DH has a cracked/dislocated rib as well. It happened while he was playing soccer, his team mate fell into him and the guys shoulder went into Nate's rib. I had to laugh because he was asked to go golfing today with some buddies and had to decline! He has to let it heal as he is going down to Tennessee next Friday to help my dad move up here.
Now that's a whole 'nother story. The reality just hit me (last night) that my dad will be living with us in 8 days!

I haven't lived with my dad in over 20 years, so this is gonna be an adjustment!!!!

have fun..and take pictures

Deli-next year we should aim at picking chokecherries & strawberries, then splitting up the pints! I made 4 pts of jam and a huge cobbler that had 5 pints of berries in it. If I had actually used those berries for jam, I would have made a total of 10-12 pts. Maybe those of us in SE WI could have a pear picking/butter making day????

Do you have a pear tree? I have one and an apple. I also have two crab apple and one is loaded. I do not do anything with them. You can have as many as you like.

I should have called you. Sorry..we went last minute.

DELI!!! You dirty rotten traitor! Now you're going on about strawberries and jam! Grumble grumble grumble... I can't even mock you about playing with your "little berries" cause you don't have that equipment.

I am now ignoring all berry talk. I will not see it unless it says "Bigfam, I have jam, jelly, or butters for you." So says I. ;)

Had a Riga chick die. Had a new chick hatch. Lots of poop in nesting boxes to clean out again. Gah-Ross!!! Smells so bad when they store it up and then do it in the box.....

Gotta get kids to bed.
