Kristip - I can feel your pain. I had one broody Little Lady we call her on eggs, then the buff orp bantam decided she wanted to sit right next to her so give her her own spot. Then Little Red(Little Ladys Sister) decided she wanted to sit, got her settled, then yesterday this buckeye looking bantam(cannot for the life of me remember what breed she was suppose to be but looks identical to my buckeyes only smaller) so I kicked her out and then a CLW knocked Red off her clutch, kicked her out. So we took Little Lady and the Buff Orp Bantam and put them in garage in kennels as they have been sitting the longest. Lady's 14 are suppose to hatch on the 27th and Buffs 10 a few days after. I hope they come thru after loosing all those in incubator, only problem there is none of those eggs are out of my blrw coop only the Lavender Orp/Sussex coop will be from their hatch. We will see how many are brooding this am when I do chores.

Well we had a rude awakening. 5:30 we were woke up by thunder and pouring rain. By the time we could focus and get the windows closed it was over
We need the rain but all this did was drop a fast 1/4" of sticky. Oh well, we are supposed to get more this afternoon. One more day of really hot.

Stacy, I have a BCM. The head looks the same as mine. I don't know what your broken wing is color wise. It's not a blue. But it's not black. It's a dilute of some sort.

Thanks Big, I'm not sure if you can see from photo or not but feathers are blackish laced. Do the hens/pullets get the copper neck like the French roo has?
Also does the broken wing one look roo and other hen? I didn't get these for breeding as I don't think they are breed quality, just for the eggs.

I think it looks hen. And when it has lacing it's called "mossy." Unwanted color leakage. Great as a layer, not as a breeder. Yes, it should get some copper around the neck.

yes vickie had some of that rain and now it has added to the steam,,,fingers crossed for some real rain and then on to the predicted cooler temps

so far the birds have taken the heat well,,,,lost a couple at the start of this but thinking that was more of a natural culling of weak older birds

sclark,,,,sorry to say imo those are typical poor examples of BCM's (I have been working on some for 3 years and it is very aggravating to say the least). There are a couple really good threads on BYC with some of the top breeders if you are interested, also there are a couple of Yahoo email groups that are good. That cockerel has some obvious faults that would be really hard to correct with breeding him, the pullets are both possible candidates for the laying flock but not for breeding purposes IF you intend to call them Marans. The breed in general is a genetic mess and won't be corrected any time soon, IF I was to start over with them I would spend the $$ and buy juveniles from a proven line,,,not putting your birds down just stating facts. Folks here wanted some of my stock this spring and I said no, not to be a jerk but I don't want to see others wasting time and money on poor quality birds. This years chicks are displaying more problems than they are worth to me, I will keep the pullets for the laying flock but if I decide to stick with the breed I will be spending some $ and start with new stock.

good morning,, all is well at thlis lhomestead..

One of the chicks didn't make it into the coop with mama,, spent all night outside by himself.. but he is OK and reunited with the family this morning.. bet he won't do that again, soon..

I had to help 2 keets out last night and today there are 2 more that are not making any progress.
these are all from that late hatch.. no vigor left .. normally I do not help, but this is such a special situation.. none of them are supposed to hatch this much past due date.. they went through the power outage,,, and then almost 2 days out of the bator waiting to be tossed into the garbage.. I think they deserve a little extra help.. I helped 3 out of 5 so far.. they are all doing great..

just a tip : fyi,, IF you are going to help any kind of egg to hatch,, DO NOT straighten out the neck for them,, If the head is pasted tight, loosen it, but don't straighten the neck.. you will end up with a crippled or dead baby..

I just want to ask a question.. speaking of babies.. is it wise for a pregnant woman to be messing with Sulmet and the similar meds ? IDK ,, just seems dangerous to me..

I think I will call DD#1 and see if she wants to break for breakfast .. she delivers a weekly paper called City Pages on Thursdays..
If you ever see her anywhere between Wausau and Stevens Point say Hi ..

guess I will do chores now.. as soon as my cuppa is finished..

Thanks for your input Dan. When I purchased them I had no idea what to look for in the breed and should of researched. I had the only intention to get dark eggs and so far it has proven to be the biggest headache of my chicken life. I started with 5 chicks and am down to the 3. Thanks for the help I will keep the info for later but as for now I have my hands full with breeding and can't add another atm.

Well off to clean fence line before I start eating horses because my daughters gelding thinks he doesn't need to stay in pasture. Been ripping apart the rabbit feeders to get the alfalfa pellets 8 days in a row now.
