I put a fan in the coop last night... poor chickens... the guineas seem to handle the heat much better... coming from a hotter climate it doesn't surprise me... they only drink half the water the chickens do too.

Can anyone tell me if muscovy ducks will get along with chickens cooped in same pen ??? (4 chickens and 4 ducks abouts). My neighbor who recently moved in wants to mini farm (he's from the city), he has a coop and covered run and I am giving him 4 Olive Eggers a couple months old, now he told me he is also getting ducks... just wondering if that will work out for him... the pen is maybe 14 x 12 connected to a small coop (9 x 5). I told him I thought ducks were a bit messier.... that's all I know about them. He did say they will free range during the days when they can...
And from what I read, some people say it's fine while others say no...

My Olive eggers and young BCM rooster cooling off yesterday.

Stay cool everyone!

I'm so brand new to this still (first year with birds), but having 2 chickens and 2 ducks in our 8x14 coop / 20x30(?estimated) run/coopyard.. the ducks are MESSY!! They get water all over the wood floor at night when the waterer is inside. That combined with all the poopies inside.. it gets real gross fast! That's my biggest complaint. The plywood isn't holding up well with the moisture. We have lots of renovating to do and are going to be building a duck house to keep them separate at night. During the day they're fine mingling with our chickens. So far anyway, we'll be introducing 10 4-6 week old chicks in the next week or so. We may end up fencing off another section ~15x20 if there is a problem.

What is a good price for Diatomaceous Earth? Right now I'm looking on Amazon. Is there anywhere nearish Milwaukee/Racine to purchase locally? I googled and found a feed store in Caledonia.. might check that place out.

My 3 babes, getting big. Barney (white on the right) is huge. EnderChick (black) is the middle sized. FancyPants (EE) is the smallest of my 3, but probably biggest among my sister's chicks.
I either feed them too much (tried FF for a week too) or randomly picked out the three burliest babies :)

They're all so sweet though. So friendly. When I open the top gate, they wait for me to put my hand down, then they climb up my arm and perch. I had three sleeping chicks on my arm the other night. Adorbs. and I surprisingly haven't been pooped on yet, though they got the floor a couple times while playing on the edge of the bin.

Kendra,

You have some smart birds!
Ok, I'm back. You may start cursing now................. I was 15 pages behind, so if you saw me lurking, you know why.

So now CRS has set in just in time for me to get to bed. I had a few comments to make too. Can I hear a collective sigh?

Frenchie, sorry to hear about the lav. I hope it wasn't one of the girls? I can hatch you out some more, or give you some eggs any time.

Del, I'd give that egg an extra day or 2. For some reason, the past few hatches I've had at least one straggler hatch 2 or 3 days after the rest. My Brin is way too small to have a cool spot, plus the turner rolls them to different areas so I don't know what the deal is.

I can give you more eggs if you want to try again. Just let me know.

My birds have been ok in this sauna so far. I had one fan go out about 2 weeks ago but at least I had a replacement that I picked up on clearance last fall. A few days ago, the other fan took a chit.

I picked up a new one yesterday & got it out there, but they still look hot. At least they only have to spend the night in there. The chicks don't seem to be fazed by the heat. They are running all over creation all day long. A baby bunny hopped over to check them out yesterday and the chicks were afraid of it!

I sure wish I would have had my camera. Too funny!

Must sleep now. Sweet dreams, all! And unfortunately I'm sober so I'm sure I'll have a double post. Good one, Jim.
I would like a few more someday. I have the one Hershey chick. It is blue. I am interested in what it is going to look like. I open the other eggs and they were fertile and they must have quit really early or never started, no veins started. It might have been too hot out and they were in the car while I worked with hay. Probably not a good choice on my part. I should have brought a cooler with ice.

Glad to see you back CC! With the double posts, there's less to read.

Ducks and chickens together only works for me when the waterers are outside the housing. They get along fine, but like someone said once ( I think it was Jim?), ducks can soak a room with 1 tsp of water. True.

BigFam, when I add Marans to the laying flock, I want it to be the Wheatens. i think they're the prettiest. Maybe I can do a test hatch for you sometime.

Jim, I think it would be prudent for a pregnant woman to steer very clear of anything ending in 'cide' (latin means to kill.) Same goes for any of these strong medications. JMO.

Terri, upset stomach needs ginger or yogurt. Or if its intuition, listen closely.

Frenchie, you are not the only one standing naked in front of fans!! It's the current preferred method of drying off after a shower.

I'm going to put this out there... With the no water inside the coop, I've got no mess with ducks and chickens. I have the water outside. Yes, there is a mess outside, but ducks are messy. But I'm really digging this eat and drink outside the coop. I love not having the duck muck in the coop, and will love it even more in the winter.
