Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well neighbor wants to use the carpet strips.. DS has it all in 2' strips she is going to lay them on her raised beds to kill the weeds... Getting rid of the carpet has never been so cheap and easy...
TO lemme say this they come back.. Thought I had DD 24 out when she got her Masters in May... But now she is doing field work at Rochester and will be back home doing another 12 weeks at UW childrens hospital... Heaven help me I love her so much but she is her mothers daughter...DS 22 is having a difficult time so we are making the best of it and hopefully in the next year he too will be ready to try the real world again, but he is working and paying rent and never grumbles when asked to do something... I guess I'd rather do the laundry than have them jamming 3 loads into one and putting the washer and drier on the blink.
Oh just to let you know the word is rehydrate that means add water to restore the tomatoes, but if you add oil it just softens them up and makes them really really good tasting.
I O I O so back to work I go

Oh yeah...the mealworm colony slows way down in the winter. You dont have to do anything with the worms...just feed them as they hatch and grow. The chickens LOVE them better when they are juicy and moving!
BTW--if you are using any chicken feed be sure to microwave it and let it cool before adding it to your colony...I ended up with white mites in mine from feed!
Hey Terri, were those white mites easy to spot? I have been using ground feed pellets since we started the farm in February and I haven't noticed any. I do have a ton of fruit flies from the fermented feed that I was finally able to move outside. It's not in my ideal feed storage spot, but it is out of the laundry room . . . we are slowly getting our chicken areas functional. Since last July, Rod has built 5 chicken keepers (coops, mobile coops, brooder box, runs, pastures) whew these fine feathered friends are keeping him busy

One other thing on the mealworms, I had read someplace that it wan not a good idea to feed live mealworms in the coop if using DL, something about the ones that are missed hatching and the beetles being bad for the chickens. Ever hear of this?? Seamed odd to me

Having a short lunch break. I just finished chores at 1:30! Scrubbed and bleached waterers etc. I missed doing them on Saturday cause I had to work. So much easier doing them weekly that letting them go...
the Lone Ranger
WHat a cutie...I have about 30 of them running around here like that (but no feathered feed) What kind did you say he is?

MomG--the white (or grain) mites look kind of like a moving piece of foam. They are teeny tiny but stay in a group. It was very weird when I got them...I changed everything out and had to start over. They come very easily if your substrate has too much moisture. I noticed them near the top of my container and almost choked when I noticed the mass moving!
My chickens LOVE the beetles (dead or alive) When I pick up feed sacks off of the floor they are always waiting because in the summer the beetles are there along with some meal worms...they gobble them up in a hurry for sure. Bever read anything about them being "bad." Also, I hand feed the worms so there is never an escapee! They all line up and take them right out of my fingers! One of my favorite times of the day. I went into the baby's coop today (after giving them worms for the first time yesterday) and two of them were following me around and pecking at my hands and legs as I was watching the group.

Guess I better get back outside. The garden is calling...I dont want to get too comfy in here!

Ok, wow, I miss one day and four pages? Really? On the Kindle so I can't open a second window so if I miss any questions, etc forgive me.
Frenchy - you can order chicken and/or fish to go from Hill's by the piece ($1 each I think) and fries by the pound. (Used to do the buckets but the cabin people always wanted more/less-price comes out the same) If you get the dinner you have to go make up your own salad bar plate to go, u less of course you get the fish fry dinner. We normally just get a 8 piece and a pound. Ok, now I know what we're having for supper so I think I'll make a pasta salad to go with.

Sorry, can't remember who had the sick doggy, and I'm too late anyway, but knew when I read the first post that was a classic severe allergic reaction . Inside the thigh like that it probably hit that vein and it was like main lining the toxin. Did you say several "bites"? Sorry can't remember. My guess would be puppy either laid on a ground wasp or tangled with red ants. Both are capable of causing that kind of reaction in pups if offending dose is high enough. (Been there).

JIM - Speaking of pups, glad to hear Dora is responding. Let me take a guess. Terri recommended curcumine, right? Great anti-inflammatory for chickies too.

Another vet trip with our puppy today and she is doing great. Couple more weeks of antibiotics and we should be good to go.

Speaking of antibiotics, (hehehe), all my chookies are responding great!!! No more sneezing, snorting, etc and no change in laying patterns or egg quality :celebrate. Another week and then on to the oil of oregano to restore the gut balance and a good dose of QUALITY probiotics of course.

TWIZZLEBEE - Marek' s? I am so very sorry. I can be of little help, I can only offer a huge hug :hugs.

Sorry for any other illnesses or losses I missed. Wow, what a cute little lone ranger, and who was that hotty in the red dress??? ;)

Keep cool everyone and thank you Frenchie for not showing off your new hairdo!. :lau

Heather...we can loan you a broody silkie if that helps to keep baby company...so many Broodies this summer. Sent a bunch to carols for a visit to break brood, but one till remains. I figure a day of being away from the nest box and being held by kids might break the brood. I think I am going to use the xpen and bring the three silkies out so kids don't go in and out all day. Put it in the shade, maybe even add the dog igloo we picked up on a free pile.

Well my corn source only had two dozens for us. Oh well, it is a start. Processing it tonight. It is packer, our corgis birthday today. Kids are almost as excited as they are for their bday next week! We had to stop at f and f because who can celebrate a bday with a new toy. So he has been having fun with the new squeaky soccer ball. Heather, we have a similar problem with you and shadow...packer thinks dh and the kids are litter mates so plays rough and mouths them. Ours had his boy parts chopped off six months ago..didn't seem to make any difference. But we can finally trust him out sometimes at night or short trips instead of kenneling him always. Accidents are not usually an issue, but eating kids Legos or stuffed animals can be. Slowly getting there.

Heather , what an awesome cute chick.. Hope you can find a Tonto for him.. Does anyone else find it odd that the Lone Ranger never kissed a girl in any of his movies ? Did you know that Hopalong Cassidy never shot anyone in any of his movies ? Did you know that John Wayne hated riding on horses ? Tidbits that you could have gone through life not knowing,,,,or caring ..

my welder has not showed up yet.. Maybe couldn't find a babysitter.. or else he had to work late. or else he died,, no other excuse will be accepted..

What should you do when you see a space man ?? Park your car in it, man..

I am being bored..

I suppose I should go out and check the birds,,,,,again..

Jim, you seem like ypu jus had some happy grass.

Thank you for the turkey offer. We got home about an hour ago with the new ones. Three blue and one black. We all thought maybe the hen was bred by a wild turkey. I thought thatbwas so amazing! We got the oddball. After some research, I now realise blue turkeys can throw slate, self blue, and black. Imagine my disappoint.

Guess we should have read up before purchase lol
Oh well. Maybe we will use it in the breeding program. Hubby is hard at work building a turkey coop in the grainery. How do ypu spell that?
