Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

WOW TO we are having popcorn too tonight. Gary was sorry if he had to rush but he needed to get home to relieve me to the funeral planning. I would rather have changed the 3 dirty diapers he did

As for the powers of chicken healing I can attest to that. The neighbor who has lost 3 birds to her dog also had one New Hampshire that was mauled by her Sisters Lhasa and I preformed plastic surgery in the way of stitches, although they (the professionals) say no to stitching. It was a gaping wound. We irrigated and liberally applied triple antibiotic and then I stitched. Her entire back was exposed. It has been a month and she is good as new. The healing powers chickens have with bacterial infections etc is amazing!!

Hmm, I had some comments to make but CRS...... I think I pee'd everything out !!! LOL I didn't take all of my Lasix yesterday because we were on the road but I did today. I basically just dedicated the whole day to going pee.
It's suppose to be about 43 tonight..... Wow, even it it warms up tomorrow I hope the pool doesn't get to cold. Weds is suppose to be 80. Ihave a doctor appointmet too. I'll have to just run to town and back and jump in the pool.
I see the cardiologist's NP. This ought to be interesting. They had better shed some light on the Pulmunary Hypertension thing. This Lasix is making me feel very weak..... I'm just plain old pooped !! I could give a crap about doing anything... SH!T !!!! This really sucks !!! I wanted to feel better for the summer.... now it's over and things aren't done. My niece the pharmacist came up to the cabin for the weekend. She said (now brace your yourselves) that they give VIAGRA for some forms of PH. Hmmm..... Interesting. So I'll ask about it. Guess it open up the blood vessels to your lungs the same way it does to other places down there !!
Actually ET's pulm told us that they used it for PH before it was used for ID. He said when the study was over the woman brought back the extra Viagra pills, the men kept them and said they were Gold !! He said for some reason the men in the study just never got better and needed refills... woman not so much !!! LOL

Hope everyone with chicken health issues can get them resolved, especially before the cold weather is here to stay. I think I'm going to take an ambien so I can just crash.

Sure wish CRS would disappear as well as it steals my thoughts !!! ARGHHH..... Oh I see our old man Jim is online....what's up Jimbo? Missed ya !!

Amy, Cool... a midwife !! Just curious... does insurance pick up the tab for that ??? Do I get another guess ????? I'm going to say next Monday, same time. Monday, September 9th 5:45PM

I sewed up a showgirl hen that had wry neck when she banged her head on something. She cut the side of her face. I stitched her up with a needle and thread, twice. She survived that miraculously but passed away from the wry neck or ??? much later. That was sad. I bonded with that little girl.
KristP....that's a lot of people.... maybe you are in the wrong profession.... you should be a party planner !!!!! In CA where you can make money !!! LOL

I have stitched my share of chickens..I had no idea you were not supposed to.

I've had chickens with huge wounds caused by ??? I think the other chickens and thought they would never make it. I sprayed blue kote on the gaping wound and it healed perfect. The wound was not bleeding though.
I think if it is bad enough it should be stitched if the alternative would mean culling or increased risk of contamination. Let's face it... no matter how clean you keep a coop or hospital pen chickens don't listen when you tell them to not pick at their wounds !!! lol

Another thing they are saying, at least for horses is to not flush an open wound with hydrogen peroxide. I can understand that but it is always still tempting to use it.

Quote: Poop butt with chicks usually mean its too hot. Wet the feed just before service and raise the heat lamp if you have one. We have cooler weather coming now so that should help. Cocci chicks look like they are cold. They huddle together and shiver.
I have never raised LF Cochins. I do not think any bred is much different than another unless they are imported or not hardy for this climate. Cochins should be great in WI weather.

Just want to say something about the "undersized" chick that was one of the signs I should have seen in the Infectious Bronchitis chick that infected my flock...Hind sight in my case is 20/20 and I am glad that it is behind me. If you have what appears to be a sick chicken rather than dosing for something you are guessing at I really suggest a blood test. It could save you a lot of worry, concern and needless medicating. Antibiotics work on Bacteria, Fungicides on Fungi. But if it is Viral nothing but prayers and preventative vaccination is going to work. That is my Nickel

Cleaned out the chicken Taj Mahal (AKA tractor) today and the hubs did some fixing for me. Got most of it painted then ran out of paint so I'm off to Menards tomorrow for more. Getting ready for some Iowa Blues from Hurley on Friday.

I caught an ad for FF on the radio - Sprout All Flock 50# bag is on sale for $9.something. Think I'll stop there as well and see what other trouble I can get into.

My 7 day-a-week summer season is over so I can get out more during the week. I still have to be there for the critters and the garden but I'm no longer chained to it all day.

Thankfully the day ended better than it started (sort of)!

When Dh came home we packed up the car to head over to his folks place to pick apples and visit. We were also going to drop off our tag-along bike for some friends of ours, and the boys brought their pellet guns to plunk at chipmunks or whatever. We get to our friends house and chit chat for a bit, drop off the bike, and head on our way. Arriving at my in-laws, we head out to pick apples..... and of course get sidetracked by the ducks. They needed their 'pond' re-filled. Finish doing that and I remember that I need pillbugs for the UW, so my MIL grabs a clean sour cream container and we head over to the compost pile and dig up about 30 of the little buggars. Time to pick apples. We have our own apple picker with an extension handle (very sweet) to get those beauties at the top of the tree. So the girls, youngest DS and I are dealing with the apples when suddenly my oldest DH starts yelling OW and pulling down her pants! The rest of us are asking her what the heck is she doing? She runs off saying she was stung by a bee. I start looking for yellow jackets around the area she was standing and see nothing. None of the rest of us have been stung or see any kind of bee nest so we keep picking apples. Soon my DH and oldest DS show up trying to find the bee nest. Of course they find it, a big Bald Hornet nest in the apple tree right next to the one we were picking from. So what does my DH do? He pokes the nest with his gun. I have never seen 5 people run so fast in so many directions in my life....... and those wasps still managed to tag DH. We wait a few minutes and go back to picking apples. Meanwhile, DH and oldest DS find a huge paper wasp nest that needs to be dealt with. Of course with that nest getting disturbed, the poor dogs got the brunt from the bees...... Eventually I decided we had enough I let DH know he could take care of the bees. So youngest DD, DH and I are checking out the nest, and I decide I am going to throw some of the windfall apples at it...... and miss every throw (trying to throw through trees is difficult...). At this point my DD picks up a few, gets within 15 ft of the nest and pelts it with her third shot. I am outta there, I am not getting stung. Dh stands there watching the bees and has one fly right at his face, sting him in the forehead, and take off again...... Now it is war on the hornets...... and after dinner they were finally vanquished, with a little help from some bug spray, the pellet gun, and a lighter.

I am grateful DD is not allergic and neither is my DH, although, I do not think that he was stung too badly after looking at the palm sized bruise my DD has on her thigh from that one sting. I see the mark on DH's forehead, but find nothing on his back.....

So that was our evening. We had pork hocks with all the trimmings for dinner and had an apple pie chaser (the dessert not the drink).

First day of school tomorrow..... and back to Fox so I need to head to bed!

Night all!

They were born on or about June 5th. I've been pretty ill the past few days is why I haven't been on besides going thru Morphine withdrawals as noone told me I was suppose to be weaned off the stuff, it hasn't been a pretty couple days around here from the hot cold sweats to the twitching and jerking and being unable to sleep. On top of catching a bug from my immune system being all out of whack the kids had been doing my chores and don't pay as close attention as I do. Daughter said they were fine this am walking around but son did notice one with a poopy butt but didn't know to tell me. I explained to them if this happens again tell me asap as we can hopefully catch it early. Anyhow, 2 of my Cochins have poopy butt and are having a hard time getting around. I'm hoping their still alive by morning but time will only tell. I did empty out their water and give them Corid treatment asap. Theirs no blood so it might be early enough to catch who knows. I know I've about had my fill of sickness with chickens already this year and could just throw in the towel to defeat. I'm not sure I will be able to get over to Barron anytime soon to take in a stool sample, other than daughter has class in Rice Lake on Friday I could see if she could drop it off for me. We lost another duck last night too, so we are down to one hen and she's so upset calling for her mate. Thats 4 now that have been taken by a critter but has left no trace of feathers or remains. I swear if it weren't so cold outside I'd sit out with a light and a shotgun just to take care of this once and for all. We have her locked up for the night in the brooder. Makes no sense to me as theirs 20 plus chicks with 4 broodies loose not 4 feet from where the ducks sleep and no chicks missing at all. And quite frankly I'm sick of being sick already and don't need all this extra crap to be stressing over!! I go in Thursday for my check up from surgery and their going to get a piece of my mind of the lack of care that I have received after surgery and the hell I've been thru.

What kind of duck is she? If you get the predator figured out I have call drakes, my mom has a bunch of different kinds and I know someone getting rid of khaki campbell drakes.
