Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Cind - I googled piebald deer and found the picture, actually there is something on SNOPES about it. The deer wasn't taken in WI as the picture said but Texas... Yeah Wisconsin / Texas easy to confuse the two???

Wazine... so how do I mix this for my 7 hens? just make a one gallon mixture and give it to them for one day? How long do we wait before we eat the eggs and then I have to do some secondary treatment?

Big question I have an Americana she is probably 7 months old and has been laying regularly for almost 3-4 weeks 3-5 eggs a week all of a sudden 8 days have passed and no blue eggs? The others she is with Barred Rock and Java are continuing to lay, but as my flock was devastated with Infectious Bronchitis last April and the state poultry vets assured me the virus was not viable after 4 weeks I am skeered :fl  Anyone have any other ideas?

WAZINE - 1 oz. To 1 gallon of water. Remove all water the night before then next morning put out ONLY the wazine water and leave out til the next morning. I put pro biotics in their water the next day to help restore balance. I also give any that showed worms extra protein to help them rebuild damaged tissue (refer to my yucky pic) and any blood loss.
EGG TOSSING - jury is out on that one since no study was ever done. The standard educated guess is toss eggs for 7 to 10 days.
IF ANY ROUND WORMS ARE FOUND - then dose again in 10 days but NOT with Wazine. Wazine only kills adult round worms. To destroy the oocysts and other forms of parasites, you need to give a broad spectrum wormer such as fendbendazole. Personally I prefer to use Valbazen because of it's effectiveness against the pre-adult stages of the round worms and other parasites. Another 7 to 10 days of egg tossing.

the reason for the Wazine first is if there is a large infestation, killing all the parasites at once could cause a blockage in the gut that would kill your bird. Wazine only kills the adult round worms, then you give the next one to kill the newly hatched out round worms and anything else. Round worms aren't the only parasite they can get, just the largest and most common. If you have been following my posts you've seen the damage they can do.

TOSSED.EGGS - I scramble mine and feed some of them back to the girls to up their protein.

Good evening!  Found out I did not get the job...I guess I didnt ask enough questions?

MGille--I wouldnt worry about the Ameraucanas...They seen to be very seasonal layers!  The daylight is getting too short for birds to lay now and if you dont provide supplemental light they will taper off and quit by the time there are 10 hours of daylight. (I think we are right about 12 now...slightly less)  You are lucky (in my opinion) to get an AM to start laying in the first summer!  I had to wait until the following spring for mine.

Great job on those Wolf River Apples!  Looks like your DD is having a great time snacking on it!  I have always wanted to have apple trees and we did plant them at our last house...never did get to harvest one though!  We had a really OLD apple tree there too.  They were so good.  I guess I just dont like apples enough to do all the work for them.  Seems pairs are much easier!  No bugs!

Cuties--I dont think the worming would have made your bird sick.  I always feed the eggs back to the birds.  You should see them!  They just wait for me to pick them up...I toss them against the wall so they shatter and the birds just mob them!  I have eaten them on occasion too...still alive!   BTW--the ones I decided to worm that did dump a few worms did not include any that you hatched for me.  I saw one clump in the pen where Tommy is living with the cuckoo marans...for all I know it was him!

Well--lots to read yet...nighties!  TerriO

It is too funny!

Awwww, so sorry you didn't get the job, bet you would make a great nanny!!! :hugs

I feed my eggs back but I scramble mine. I'm afraid if I fed them back raw one of the stinkers would put two and two together and start cracking their own!!

CUTIES - I tend to agree with Terri about over dosing with wazine. Very hard to do with this one if it was .fixed properly. Have any nutridrench handy? That's usually a great picker upper for chicks. I always have some around because it can really work wonders even with adults in cases of extreme stress and/or shock.

Thanks del.

Momgill, I just mixed according to directions. It says not to butcher untill 14 days after treatment. But nothing about eggs. I am pitching for the two weeks.

Del, if I feed eggs back to chickies, will they get more wazine and od? Will eggs now work as dewormer in dogs? :p

No official study has ever been done on this (whether any drug migrates into the eggs) so the 7 to 10 days is just a recommended precaution.

Hello all,

So you missed me Cind ???? I have to say ditto to your posts. You manage to reply to everyone and still manage to make it short and sweet... so for now on that's what I'm gonna do..... Ditto to Cindladys reply !!! lol

I've been hanging out on the Facebook page for Wisconsin Horse Exchange. Buy, sell, trade horses, supplies and equipment as well as asking horse related questions. I posted some questions about Amish trainers and Amish that geld (for my Jack Donkey)
There is also a FREE Mammoth Jenny (female) donkey on there. No I am not going to get her as much as I would like to. She has a bad hoof... a lot of interested people but they are all to far away for people to go.

I also rejoined www.giddyupflix.com Giddy Up Flix They rent out horse DVD's. My first two came so been watching them. A veterinarian name Don Hammil akd Doc Hammil has several driving DVD's. I just watched "Preventing Wrecks" Not what I thought it would be but still good. He didn't do any driving in the dvd he just covered all of the harnessing issues that can cause wrecks etc. Can never be to safe. The second dvd was suppose to be for parents and kids. Again not what I thought BUT did learn and refresh my memory. So if I get these back in the mail tomorrow I"l get two more to watch hopefully I'll get them by Monday.

Glad I wasn't eating when I read all about the roundworms today !!! LOL That is one of the drawbacks of free ranging. Earthworms and bugs are carriers of all that natsty stuff. I cringe when I see my chickens eating worms. I hate worms period so you will never see me handing them any !! LOL
Ok, gotta go check WI Horse Exchange and find more dvd's to rent on Giddyupflix Oh and btw they have tons of Parelli dvds now. Even the programs that would cost you hundreds if you bought them !!!! I'm on the waiting list for them.

Quote: Plus never underestimate the power of just plain clean water. Make sure there is plenty to flush their system. Oh and Cutie... You are so cute... It's spelled Cayenne Pepper !!!! I feed it to my peafowl. Suppose to be good for killing or repelling the protozoa that causes blackhead (or something like that)

OOPS! One last note on round worms. The oocysts (eggs) of the round worm are pooped out and can live in the soil for a very long time and are very hard to kill. It is the oocysts that the birds pick up either directly or indirectly by eating worms etc that have eaten the oocysts and become inflected or reinfected so once ground has been contaminated you have the potential for a vicious cycle. Good news is, for us anyway, one thing that does kills them is extreme cold like frozen ground. I figure I have lost the use of my only isolation run for now but should be able to open it back up after the ground freezes solid. I just need to keep it shoveled off to be sure it gets good and cold!!!

Oh,it's a good day! Read this article about how Lake CO. Illinois is considering allowing backyard chickens!!!!

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...ibertyville-chickens-20130926,0,4842613.story

We are very hopeful that the ordinances will change and open more doors. I've got to figure out when the public hearing will be!

Delisha- I have some left over "stuff" from unpasterized apple cider. How do I turn it into ACV?

Thanks for the updates on the Wazine, I can handle that this weekend. The girls never have water at night anyway as they are in lock down and I like to keep the coop dry even in the summer.
Good to know about the Americauna, I was hoping that was the issue Terri. The Java was taking forever to lay, but I had read they were late maturing.

I don't know if I will make the poultry show, the flooring people called and moved up our work to next week so we have to get all the sub-flooring torn up and all the baseboards. My son has gotten all the carpet removed, but we have to move furniture all the pictures down from the walls and all out clothes from 3 bedrooms the dining room and living room to the family room, garage and kitchen by Sunday night, then it is a 5 day project laying new flooring sanding and refinishing 5 rooms and 3 sets of stairs. If it is nice next week we may be living in a tent in our backyard. Roasting wienies on sticks over the fire pit for supper. But if anyone makes real plans please post if I get time I know DH and I would like to see all the birds.

Ohhh and TO the nanny job you are looking for is it full time? I know someone was looking for a nanny but was only part-time after school, I think. They are in Cottage Grove. I can check with her and see if she ever found someone. Let me know.

Night all

CS, I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

With all this talk about using all of these different medications for worm infestations, are any of you who are medicating your flocks using DE???? I can see medicating if there is an extreme infestation, and then using DE to keep the chooks worm free. They are going to eat all of the 'carrier' organisms if you are allowing them to free range or just go outside.

Have any of you who have horses used DE to worm your horses? Could be a $ saver right there. No drug tolerance build up either....

You must all be psychic....... I came down with a cold yesterday.......

Must be from all the stress at work.
