Only chicken news this morning is I have a pullet problem, of course.

One of my red sex links that Dan warned me about but instead of prolapse she has stopped laying. Huge egg, no shell egg, small egg, huge egg, etc. Then a week ago, major shelless egg and a large intestinal shed. Skip a day then lays the tiniest, hardest fart egg and now nothing since for a week. She had been wormed with the rest a couple weeks ago and have no idea if the two are related tho none of the hens showed any problems except the aussies of course. Anyone have a guess as to whether she will ever lay again? I have checked for egg bound, etc but She is otherwise fine. Oh, these girls are from an April 1 hatch. One other note about this girl. I could always tell her eggs because hers were the only ones with pigment spots.

Other than the shed sounds like my bout of IB, are the shells ridged and thin? The shells slightly lighter in color, the yolks pale? I am thinking this is not a "shed" of the intestine but a shed of damaged ovary tissue. It takes major effort for you chick to lay a shell-less egg. Some of mine never laid shell-less I had six and it was quite a mix. The one who had the most damage laid the shell-less several times and withing 4 weeks was laying shelled again. Albeit very thin. She also went from shell-less to pullet size and then in between this time some of the eggs had tails...You can get rid of the infection with antibiotics but the damaged ovaries are a lifetime. I kept by reds for 4 months and finally got rid of them all and started over. None of my new birds caught the IB it dies out in the environment after about 12 weeks. Me and son just come in from checking the chickens. Dog was going crazy and shined my big flash light out and seen at least 10 sets of eyes. Come back in and grabbed shoes and a coat and convinced son that I couldn't go out alone in case and it was coyotes behind my barn. Hopefully we have them scared off for the night. This am we see that Eda, one of her chicks and 3 of Fayes chicks are missing. We gathered up most of the free rangers and put them in my brooder pen for the night. I'll get it figured out better tomorrow. You'd think the dang coyotes could take some of these roos but no they take my layers and babies. Sold just one of Edas babies tonight, pretty sure it was a cockerel though. They are going to get back to me about buying some of the pullets and layers. It'd be nice to sell the layers out of the 2 coops are their is sets of 3 hens and 1 roo in each and it would make room for all the young ones for the winter. I could put the June July babies in one and the ones in the house in the other for heat purposes.

Sorry about your loss!!! I guess coyotes find it easier to catch birds without spurs and an urge to protect! GRRRRR!

Does anybody know how to treat goopy eye in chickens?

maybe a bit more of an explanation of your problem would help...or pictures help

I have had a couple birds get "goopy eye" when they were scratched or pecked (I think) I washed the eye with saline a few times. One cleared up in a day or 2, the other was still cloudy at 5-6 days and I used some clear gel med I had on hand for my dog,,,anti biotic stuff,,got it at FF,,,,,,,,anyone help me out with the name?(yes old and forgets and the tube is now gone)
ETA: Terramycin Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment,,,yeah that's the ticket!
