we just let her get a free roo at a show recently. I am sure he is poor quality. But makes her happy!
Only chicken news this morning is I have a pullet problem, of course.
One of my red sex links that Dan warned me about but instead of prolapse she has stopped laying. Huge egg, no shell egg, small egg, huge egg, etc. Then a week ago, major shelless egg and a large intestinal shed. Skip a day then lays the tiniest, hardest fart egg and now nothing since for a week. She had been wormed with the rest a couple weeks ago and have no idea if the two are related tho none of the hens showed any problems except the aussies of course. Anyone have a guess as to whether she will ever lay again? I have checked for egg bound, etc but She is otherwise fine. Oh, these girls are from an April 1 hatch. One other note about this girl. I could always tell her eggs because hers were the only ones with pigment spots.
Other than the shed sounds like my bout of IB, are the shells ridged and thin? The shells slightly lighter in color, the yolks pale? I am thinking this is not a "shed" of the intestine but a shed of damaged ovary tissue. It takes major effort for you chick to lay a shell-less egg. Some of mine never laid shell-less I had six and it was quite a mix. The one who had the most damage laid the shell-less several times and withing 4 weeks was laying shelled again. Albeit very thin. She also went from shell-less to pullet size and then in between this time some of the eggs had tails...You can get rid of the infection with antibiotics but the damaged ovaries are a lifetime. I kept by reds for 4 months and finally got rid of them all and started over. None of my new birds caught the IB it dies out in the environment after about 12 weeks. So sorry bout your little red...

THis is an interesting method...too bad it doesnt work for raccoons! I have something getting baby ducks and other birds that dont go in! The numbers are falling for sure. I thought I would have a ton of muskovies to sell this fall but they are disappearing in great numbers. If only they would pen up! I need to move a bunch of this "stuff" in the dooryard so there arent so many ring around the rosie obstacles! Then perhaps I could heard them into somewhere....Lord knows my herding dogs dont help!
None of the above, sorry. When her eggs had shells they were completely normal except for the pigment spots and her yolks were nice and dark. Never heard of an ovary shed. Have to look that one up. She is showing no other sign of IB. Everyone else is fine. Guess I'll just have to wait and see like I am with the aussies

Had a coyote come out of the trees after the chickens a couple months ago. It almost ran into me. Well not quite, it stopped about 15' short of me when it saw me and we had a stare off. It seemed like a long time before it departed back into the woods. My husband suggested that I fire off a couple rounds with my 9mm in the mornings (just at the target) for the next few days. Haven't seen one again.
Sounds like a mad house over there TO. I can still count everyone every night once the go to roost in their respective coops and their spots in the barn. I guess I only have 30 something though
Lost my 7 month old buff orphington rooster, Harry, today. Don't know what happened to him, but we had to put him down due to a messed up neck and face. Didn't look like an attack of any kind, but he got into something or did something that didn't work out for him. Maybe a horse kick, dunno? He was a floppy mess. I really liked that rooster
