Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Thanks!  I am proudest of the cost.  My goal was 750 and I was able to mooch and scrape and repurpose, recycle and dicker the materials needed for just under 1000.  Not bad
I have a Buff orp. roo that is just starting to crow and mate that I could part with if there was a taker. A Wheaten Am. roo, and 5 toed bearded buckeye also.

I'd take the BO roo, but I still have 6 Lanshan Roos, a English orp roo, and a 5 toed feather legged buckeye roo to keep sorted out over the winter. Let's face it, Harry the BO roo was cool, but not essential personnel. (The buckeye pullet has 5 toes and a beard). They are actually a pretty cute couple and I didn't send him to the freezer after all. I kind of like Barney the Buckeye cross.

Great deal on building that nice shed makes it even more awesome.

Hummm..... Saw FT was on.... but no post. Hope things are OK.

Well, Neil is in the hospital. Took him to the doc. and he yelled at him for not going to the E.R. when the flair up started. I kept asking him if he needed to go, I guess from now on I don't ask, I tell him he's going! He'll be on I.V. therapy for 3 days and get some physical therapy. Not sure how long they will keep him. Guess it gives me a chance to clean his carpet and catch up with things I've let go the last few days. Still have to get hold of his case worker.

Jon called, he's doing great. He posted a pic. of the first 2 books he made on his own. I would post them but the pic is kinda dark. He loves his job and said he thinks he found his people. Looks like I gave birth to a Rennie! LOL

I got to do something with all these roosters soon... I want to fatten the condemned up some more though.

Guess that's it... night all!

Thanks everyone for your kind words and support! Sorry Cindlady for the trouble your having.

Well the Jeeps at the shop, they said at the absolute most for a total rebuild is 1500$. He said the torque converter is out and 2nd and 3rd bands are slipping so it could be less. He can't get to it this week but it will be done next week sometime. He at first tried to talk me out of even fixing it but after explaining to him that I just purchased it and wasn't about to finance a better vehicle and giving it a real good look over agreed that it would be a good decision to spend the money. I can't wait to get it back so I can enjoy it.

No chicken more chicken losses as most are penned up at the moment. Talk about roosters, not good but nice to know I'm not the only one with the problem this year. I have 9 in the pen we made out of the old hay dryer I took out of the barn. Those were from early spring chicks, no pullets. Jose's pen has 2 pullets and 6 cockerels left, whats left of the June/July hatches I think I only seen 4 possible pullets of 15. Not sure what I will have of the 16 in the house, just early guessing I'm only seeing a couple pullets. Of those cockerels is a BO, Splash Cochin LF, SLW, BO Bantam, Lavender Orp(I have 3 total), EE, Lemon Cuckoo Orp, and other Orp and Wyondotte crosses. On top of my breeding pens; 3 SS Hens & 1 roo; 1 Lav Orp roo & 2 BO Hens 1 Black Orp(Split); 1 Lav orp Roo & 1 BCM 1 Blue CM 1 Mix; 1 BLRW & 2 BLRW hens 2 BWA 1 SLW 1 GLW 1 Blue Wydontte 1 Black Wyondotte; 1 Partridge Cochin Bantam & 1 PCB hen 1 Black Cochin 1 White Cochin 1 Lav Cochin 1 Blue Silkie 1 Mille Fluer; free rangers are 1 Billy Bob & 2 Reds 2 Leghorns. I know I'm missing some as I have 80 plus total at the moment. Last head count before chicken theives was 84 outside plus the 16 chicks in house. I'm not 100% but think I may have a BO Bantam Pullet to replace my show hen that Dog got to get pared back with my roo unless it being his daughter is bad to pare for breeding. If its not good to breed them back I'll just sell them as I've not been able to come across anyone who breeds them to purchase more pullets/hens.

John that sure is a nice coop. I had huge plans of building me a log coop with some of our pine trees before winter but it's not looking like it will get done this year. I wanted to build it big enough I could partition it to house all the chickens in one coop and use the hay dryer cages for their separate runs. I have such big ideas but health prevents me from accomplishing them. I wanted to do it this was so I don't have to power my currently 9 coops(10 now if you could the dryer cages housing the roos) all in one location. I have them spread out all over and it gets to be tiring to do all the hauling and walking to feed and water. I did have a routine that I filled all the water jugs and loaded them into the wheel barrow which took a great load off but their are times I can't even do that. If I build it behind the garage like I intended I could run power easily. I was going to hire a friends boys to come do the hard work but haven't felt well enough even for that. This time of the year would be perfect though as it's not as hot to work. On our property we have an over abundance of pines(not a pine fan) that are roughly 8-10 inches across that we've been wanting to clear out for the past years but didn't have a plan for them until I was driving on one of my adventures and seen a log cabin coop and fell in love with it.

The shooting off the shotgun idea sounds like a plan as my boys suggested it the other night but it was after midnight and didn't feel like waking up the rest of the house digging around to gather the guns and ammo. Will definitely get it done as the boys have been wanting to do some practice shooting. We had just did skeet shooting last week and shot off about 30 rounds or more and it didn't scare them off none. I'm not sure how big a coyote pack is but from the ones I seen their were 10 pairs of eyes the other night. When me and son went out to inspect they started growling at us about 50 feet away and our dog Rudy took off chasing them away. He's a good home protector but I fear if I leave him out at night to guard the chickens they may get brave and try to gang him. I'm not educated on how they work as packs. Maybe I'll have to do some reading.

Well today me and the boys are going to go donate time and truck usage to haul some beds to the Time Out Abuse Shelter as they needs beds and some were donated but they don't have a way to get them. I wonder if I can work that into their home schooling somehow when we do charity work. This weekend is the Harvest of Talents auction which 100% of the money goes to Rusk County. Last year we donated 10 framed photos me and my daughter did from our photography club which raised 610$. We are donating photos again and possibly some of my homemade jewelry. All donations for the auction are crafts and hobbies others in the county make. I do believe last year they raised over 25K with the auction and bake/rummage sale. Half goes to the county itself and half to the food pantries. We also go to the food pantries and help with food donations. They also help out at Lego Night at the library and with the monthly mana meals at church amongst other things. I want to teach the kids well on helping others.

Again a Frenchie post. Where are you French? If you come back I may not have to take your place with all this as I'm sure people don't want to hear about all this nonsense I spew. Although I love to read about how peoples lives are going good or bad. I don't have any face to face friends and it keeps me in touch with the world I guess if that makes sense. The only personal friend I had was the lady with the mistreated/animal hoarding and she told me I was never allowed their again. I still think I did the right thing even if it didn't turn out the way I planned.

Morning All,

Welcome to all the newbies

Nice Coop John, how big is it? Rod's mobile coop is on running gear, I think it is 9'x16' and set up to brood/raise our meaties.

It looks like I have a place for our young Delaware roosters, now I just need to figure out which ones are roos. There are about five we are definitely sure of since they are going after our old girls which are most definitely not in the mood. Funny story, we were sitting out the other night and one of the RIR's took a tail feather out of one of the big roos - he stays clear of her now

Hey TerriO and any others that plan to join us for out mini meet and greet in Paoli . . . Hwy PB is still closed, so if you are taking 18/151 (Verona Road), rather than taking the second exit (Hwy M and PB), take the third exit #77 then turn left onto Hwy 69 and follow that (about 4 miles) to the four way stop where you'll turn left into Paoli.

Looking forward to meeting some of you at Cluck the Chicken Store Saturday around 10:00 or 10:30. If you do plan to join us and wonder what else is going on in the area, New Glarus is hosting Rogues and Ruffians http://www.agatheringofroguesandruffians.com/

Enjoy this sunny day!!

None of the above, sorry. When her eggs had shells they were completely normal except for the pigment spots and her yolks were nice and dark. Never heard of an ovary shed. Have to look that one up. She is showing no other sign of IB. Everyone else is fine. Guess I'll just have to wait and see like I am with the aussies :idunno

Then I am with Delisha, wait till the Spring and see how it goes till she gets her production issue settled. Darned hard to be patient
:he

Morning everyone :frow

Thanks Delisha & Momgille :hugs that's what I was thinking to do. She is the same hen that started out laying huge double yolkers and the pigment spotted eggs so she was having getting things "synched up" from the start. Just wanted some input from the more experienced than I.

JUSTJOHN - WOW! Great job on the coop and even better on the cost :D

TERRIO - how many birds/breeds do you have??? You must have a huge place :drool I so want a barn :hit

ERSWNN - I like your idea. We live in a similar environment. Neighbors close to our south but otherwise surrounded by literally thousands of acres of untouched land including our own "back forty". Haven't had any attacks, but it's only a when, not an "if". Heard a pack "yodeling" at 7:30 this morning in the nearby potato field just off the end of our driveway, AGAIN! This has happened every day, morning and evening for several days now it's in broad daylight. Think hubby and I might need to start having a bit of target practice too.

Hi FRENCHIE! We need to stop just missing each other one of these days and meet for a cuppa some time. What cha think???

I am still having bouts of hawk trouble..My SLW is a bit torn up. I will cull her if she does not show improvement in the next few days. I am not very good with stitching, but, thought I would give it a go.

I have my last eggs in the incubator and than I am shutting it down for the year. I have hatched out two Gold Laced Orpingtons and they are cute and fat as can be. Getting every thing ready for winter and breaking up all of the breeding pens. By next month the freezer should be full and ready for the snows.

John, nice coop!

I am hoping the coop Joe is working on is done next month. it has been a long process. I think i have cleaned off enough brick to finish. It is smaller than I wanted, but, it will be great for small breeding trio's.

Cindlady, stay strong. I honestly have no idea what it's like, but I sympathize.

SClark - I hope you feel better too and sorry you have been losing chickens :(

Vickiw - I have no clue about the egg problems. If it was me I would just wait and see like you said.

Delisha, here are the pictures. They were cooperating more today. The little guy was crowing away this morning. The girls are just so cute! I am also posting a picture of the Jubilee I got from you at the bash.

Deli-I'll have to come over sometime before winter (if I have time) to see the coop in its completion. Tell Joe that it's now time for the garden gnomes, flamingos, fake screeching owls, and all sorts of other deterrents in the backyard.

OK--what I want to know is WHO is the person that is breeding these mixed up birds?????

In other words...you need to Kmart up your lawn! Time for a run to St Vinnie's...maybe a glowing santa and reindeer would stop them?

OK now I have to go and find some $$$ to put in our overdrawn checking account...(anyone wanna buy some odd birds?)
lau.gif

Really I think I have figured out the problem...the feathered feet were the clue! I have a free range Salmon Faverolle... feathered legs? CHECK. Beard? CHECK. 5 toed? CHECK! That has got to be the answer! There was one smallish buckeye hen that consistently hopped the fence(7') I thought I knew her egg as the very round one....HMMM--with the fertility problems in the eggs this year I am guessing that the Buckeye roo is shooting blanks occasionally, she knew it and wanted babies so she went and found a roo that would help! So is that giving too much credit to a chicken? Well, that's our story and we're sticking to it!

TerriOcantwaituntilsaturday

(PS) nice job JJ! Can we see the inside?
