Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

HI All!

Deli.... Sorry about your hen. If she was crying, it must have been bad. Normally they stay quiet when hurt so predators don't find them.

cuties.... that's so cute with Syd and her chick!

momg.... wow too bad about your dehydrator.

We let the milkweed grow in the Asparagus patch and by the berries. Only ever found crystallist there though.
My birds are molting too. Between that and the roos making the girls nervous, I'm way low on eggs too! Hard to fill orders that way.

Didn't see Neil today. I spent the time trying to hold of his case worker but she didn't get back to me yet. I did talk to him though. He's doing OK.

OK, stuff to do.... night all!

Quote: If there's no heat OR fan maybe it's just a bad connection or bad cord...it might be an easy fix.

Thanks for all the input on my new Orps. I've only ever hatched Orpington pullets, never had a cockerel, so I guess time will tell on this one. It is the more outgoing of the two...chases the EE pullets around and such. I'll let you all know when I hear a crow or get an egg!

None of the birds are getting to free range today. I woke up twice last night to coyotes yipping/howling and at 6am they were in the yard! I just let one of the dogs out and he was barking and running around with 'hackles' up so I'm guessing the yotes are still around. If the fog lifts I'll have to try some target shooting...see if that gets em to move on.

Huntress- I'm with Delisha and others that it's definitely a cockerel and pullet. I rechecked mine yesterday after moving them to the dryer pens and I may have all cockerels. I'll try and get photos today and see what you all think. If that's the case I will no longer be breeding Lav. Orps as I will only have the 1 split hen and the percentages are too wide spread to chance as I had too many splits hatched.

Sorry about your dehydrator Momgille, but as Huntress said to check it out. It may be just a loose connection.

The BLRW hen had one hatch but looked like it got squished and another was pipped thru lastnight so I put her in a carrier in the coop. I hope it survived, will go out in a bit and check. The Blue Wyondotte hen still has her 3 eggs that should be hatching within the next few days. Not like I need more chicks right now. I am going to work today on moving the 16 in the house outside today but have to get heat lights set up for them or the brooder hood rigged in a location. They are SOOO messy and starting to make the house smell icky. The news this morning said we may have snow next week. UGHS. I'm not ready for winter.

I do have to say that the chicks that I let the hens raise are growing much better than the ones I kept in the brooder. It's unbelievable the difference in the batches. They are bigger than the ones nearly 2 months older. The hen raised ones were let to free range which is showing to be much better for their health and growth. I will be keeping the 2 SS x Bantam hens around as long as I can to rear chicks for me. They each raised over 20 chicks each without any problems. A few of the mixes are turning out to be really pretty also.

Deli, too bad about the bird, hard to see an animal suffer, even if you had been able to stitch it might not have worked. She would have to be isolated and probably kept indoors where there is warmth for quite awhile. I have had success stitching gaping wounds on the neighbors chickens but it takes two people.

I think Lavender Orp Roosters are the most beautiful color combination.

Huntress and all, I am pretty handy and took the back off and checked all connections but I think there is a short in the timer box. The digital numbers are at 000 and pressing the button to move them up and down does nothing... maybe be the keypad? but probably easier to replace the entire unit. The fan moves just a itty bit when turned on so to the appliance repair shop it goes, Just that I had 9 trays of apples set to go GRRRR... It was nice being able to search the posts here to find the link where I bought it, just didn't function anymore... Live and learn, no more meeting people halfway at gas stations without plugging stuff in.

SClark SNOW is a four letter word....We have had an unbelievable fall here in the south, cleared the garden pretty much and actually had another picking of green beans, they are still setting blossoms. Who'd a thunk!

Have a good day all going to attempt canning apple pie filling....

Well the BLRW hen smothered the other chick from what it looked like, it was smushed under her. I let her loose and moved the Blue Wyondotte into the carrier with her 3 eggs. Well Blue had to come up and flirt with her so she started ruttin around and wanted out. Brought the 3 eggs in and put them in Brinsea to see if they will finish out or not. At least if they don't I won't have to house anymore babies. I took many photos of the chicks that hatched this year but their are over 20 so I made a folder for them. I have to finish uploading them and will provide the link if anyone feels like giving guesses at their sex. After looking again the Lav Orp may be a pullet, you can decide.

Sorry about the dehydrator, momg. I hope it is a cheap fix.

Huntress, I'm sticking with a boy & girl. They look great! I'm glad you like them. They are a very sweet, docile breed.

cuties, just let me know.

Mel, She-ra.......
