Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Welcome Jen! Best of luck to you with your upcoming flock! How exciting after waiting for the ordinance to take effect.

I'm lovin' the Mason and chicken pics! Mason is growing very quickly - he's going to be a heart breaker!

Mom is settling in well. She seems happy to be here as I have never heard her talk so much. She loves her room with all her furniture in it and she can't believe the size of the closet. She brought more than her room will hold but she's happy to give the overflow to Goodie's or Vinnie's. Some pieces of antique furniture I'll sell for her in my store.

Oh, and mom just loves the chickaroos! She talks to them and coos at them and asks after their well-being when she's not at the store to see them. She's hooked!

Love it! Thanks BigFam, they are beautiful!!!!

Momgille, a flock of crows is called a murder. Appropriate for today.......

The Copper hawk will fly through the trees chasing the mourning doves, that is when they make no sound while flying.

Veg out day, doing laundry and watching documentaries on Netflix. Baking a cheesecake too.

Thanks for refreshing my old mind... and if you private message me I will give you the address to send the cheesecake to!

Big Fam they are awesome looking birds... What ever happened to Tonto and the Lone Ranger? Are they still around?

Also baby is a sweetie Amy.

Sorry to hear about all the hawk kills, we have a Red Tail pair that eye the girls but have never made the swoop. I am thinking they have a lot smaller easier prey and hope it stays that way. Its the owls I worry about.

TGIF... Working for a living is way over-rated

Handsome baby pics- judy/ I mean Amy

nice wide bottoms- heather

nice jack o lanterns- cuties/ I means BBP

at least I remembered heather is the one with the wide.... nevermind

I only got around to carving one pumpkin this year, so far. maybe a thanksgiving carving this year.

I free handed my pumpkin and when done my son said it looked like the "Annoying Orange" guy. So it is named as such.

Rainy Fish Fry Friday To Everyone. It's baked haddock and parmo spuds tonight. Suzie will have it ready later after hunting and a couple cold ones first.

Nice pumpkin pics ....It's a shame they don't keep longer than they do after all the effort.

Nice lookin young man Amy. Time for another if you wanna be pg for the bash again. Are you gonna quit with the family you have or with a even doz or so?

It's the annual Broasted Chicken Dinner at Christus again. Thursday Nov 14th from 4:30 to 7:pm. I don't expect anyone to attend, but just a heads up in case....the menu is broasted chicken, broasted wedges, cole slaw, rolls, homemade pies, and beverages (milk, coffee, water) Adults $8 advance $8.50 door and children 4-10 are $4 advance $4.50 door and 3 and under free, just sayin.

The potato folks (Gallenbergs) are selling spuds in C-ville like usual this time of year. $10 for whites and $12 for reds per 50lbs...not bad pricing at all. I think it prolly costs me more than that for seed and fertilizer and labor...the labor is cheap, but still, the price of seed alone will buy you 100lbs....

Have Fun..bigz

So where is C-ville? in case we want a Sunday drive?

Hi all--threw my back out today tying a garbage bag of all things! Oh brother, I am getting old!

Nice looking Bernese! Chicken showing is a lot easier than dog showing by far! If you daughter wants to show a chicken There is a pet class in 4H and the chicken's breed doesnt matter at all...just the condition etc. She will learn a lot! THe birds that you show at the Fair to be Cockerals or Pullets need to be hatched as close to Jan 1 as possible for the best advantage. (if you are showing pure bred fowl) Otherwise they have to go into the cock and hen classes that are much tougher competition. Of course depending on your show.
I understand that you want a colorful egg basket, but if you are wanting chickens for eggs the breeds you have picked dont have a great track record in the laying box! (IMHO) I think that the chances that you will get all 5 of those breeds to lay on the same day are slim to none. The wellies that I had (for one short year) layed maybe 2 eggs a week. Ameracaunas are maybe 3 a week. Orpingtons seem to be always broody...at least the gold ones that I had. I have had pretty good luck with the wyandottes...The Marans also seem to be pretty consistant. I cnat remember the others you mentioned...perhaps someone else has had other experiences?
Anyhow, if I could only have 5 hens I guess I would get a mixed bag from a hatchery(maybe a lot of 25) and then weed out and sell or butcher what you dont need. The birds will be little and inside so nobody will know for at least 12 weeks (including you probably) that you have roosters in with them! And heck, the luck that some of us have...they might ALL be roosters!

I dont know if you can get "special" ones just pullets. At any rate, good luck and welcome back!

Zuppa Toscana for dinner tonight....there has been this recipe from Olive Garden going around on FB so I thought I would try it...my pizza captain for 4H came by and said my house smells fantastic...so I guess it will be good--report later!

Guess I better go and try to get the feed out of the car...poor birds, they were left short today...
Have a good night! TerriO

Terri O, thank you for all your feedback!! We do love our berner to pieces - and really enjoy being involved in dog showing. You've definitely given me a lot to think about in regards to egg laying production. I do know I really want an Ameraucana and I really want an English Orp too - the rest I am super flexible on and am continuing my research. We mainly eat eggs on the weekends only, or when I do baking or decide to make german pancakes for dinner - definitely won't be eating eggs daily. I am really hoping to avoid the big hatcheries. Maybe I have a dog breeding mindset too much. Your idea of getting a bigger quantity is a great one though and I think you're spot on. No one would ever know - bwahahaha ;-) How long do you really think I can keep them inside?? We plan to start building our coop in the garage in the winter but realistically won't be able to put it up and finish it until the snow is gone. Last year our school had a snow day on May 9th!! The year before in March it was like 70. So as you know - our weather is unpredictable. I'm just trying to figure out when I should try and get some day-old chicks... hmmmm

Jen, I wish you the very best of luck! What an exciting thing for you!! I wish your daughter best of luck at her shows!!
Lots of people here to help fill you up!
If you are interested, I am currently collecting eggs from my blr wyandotte. This is a trial run. The parents are of decent quality. And I am hopefull to get some good chicks! Lmk if you would be interested. We had some birds tested for shows. But would be willing to have the guy come again if you prefer. If your interested, pm and ill get you pics of mom and dad :)
Delisha on here has the very most amazing english orps you will ever see!

Cuties, Oh thank you!! In general, how do you like your Wyandottes? Are they good layers? I will have to check out Delisha's English Orps!!

No, I'd rather be baby-on-board-free for the next bash, thank you! I don't think we're done though, gotta try for a girl (and prob end up like BigFam.)

Terri, you totally should have made up a story like you wrestled a coon off your most prized hen with your bare hands and drop kicked him into the river. We never would have been the wiser.
