Amy, you are flippin' hilarious!
Terri, are you nuts? Chicks inside for the first 12 weeks?????? Call me a woosie, but I want them out at 4 weeks. Too much dust. Unless your brooder gets moved out to a garage with supplemental heat, then it would be ok.
Welcome back, Jen! I'm glad you returned. Guess we can't be that bad? Whistle, whistle....... Anyway, I agree with you on wanting to avoid hatchery stock. I'd try to find some reputable local breeders, if at all possible, but make sure you do your research on them first. There are many things to consider, and wanting day olds makes it harder to get all females. At least you know someone who may take the extras. I'd say look into getting a Standard of Perfection book for poultry and see what they have to say about your potential breeds of interest.
I personally love orpingtons. I have heard of many, many people who say they go broody a lot, but so far (knock on wood) I've only had 3. My hens that go broody are usually always my mixed breed Dominiques. Delisha's English orps are stunning.
Good luck to you and your soon-to-be flock, and feel free to ask lots of questions. We try to help when we can.
