Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Raimel - what are the proportions when using the Dr Bronners instead of FelsNaptha? I definitely want to try that!

Well, I'm not sure what is going on in my neighborhood lately, but I went to let the dog in and I noticed 2 cop cars across the ravine with their lights on.

Here's the update:

ZION, Ill. (STMW) – A Michigan man has been charged with murder for allegedly shooting a man to death during a birthday party at a north suburban home early Saturday.
Terrance Scott, 25, and Prentiss Carter, 42, were at a small birthday party in the 1800 block of Carmel Boulevard in Zion, where five adults were drinking alcohol and playing cards, according to a statement from Zion police.
Police said “most” of the adults were intoxicated, while four children were asleep in the home.
At some point, and for an unknown reason, Scott and Carter got into an argument, and Scott pulled a gun and shot Carter in the head about 1:20 a.m., police said.
Scott, from Ypsilanti, Mich., was taken into custody as he was leaving the area, police said. The murder weapon has not been found.
He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of being a fugitive from justice, police said. He was wanted on a Wisconsin Department of Corrections warrant.
Scott is a documented gang member, according to police, who said he has at least 11 prior arrests, at least four of those for weapons violations.

I had real bad luck with lots of boys this year.

I had 3 males from one source & one female from another. One male I bred to the female & got 4 more girls. Then I let them all mingle, so between 3 roos & 5 girls, I got your two. So they are probably somewhat related, but I very highly doubt they both have the same mother and father. Does that make sense?

Gosh Raim, those are not my calls Cuties is getting..... LOL cuties you are going to have some real mutt duck on your hands!

I cannot wait for things to get back to normal around here. Just counting the days. This guy will make somebody a nice companion, as long as he is toeing the line. Too smart for his own good.

Spent the day at Fox today doing odds and ends. Maybe tomorrow I will get some cleaning done here at the house...

Hi All!

Huntress.... congrats on the bear meat!

raim.... busy, busy, busy! I think I'll try that laundry soap, I've been making the dry version but I think people were using too much. People are so used to the store types with all the fillers their heads can't realize less is more! (I like the scent of Fells. Maybe because I grew up with it as the go to stain remover and all purpose cleaner, to me the scent means clean!)

TO... Sorry about your cat. One of my older ones needs to see a vet. she's been constipated and not looking good.

BigZ.... You mean that freezer isn't filled yet? Well get out there man!

Jim.... Stop by and say HI! Let us know your OK ever if you choose to lurk.

Nothing else new.... night all!

No need to be sorry CC. I was 'kinda' hoping for one cockerel. The problem is that I haven't decided what direction I'm going with breeding birds. I'm trying to get 'all black' and gold partridge Brahmas next Spring...and work on those two colors...but I also love my Orps. I don't have many, 4 buff, 1 gold laced and now the lav pullet, so he might go in a breeder pen with them this year. I'd get lav chicks from the pullet and a bunch of black splits. If things work out with the Brahmas then I won't have room for the splits next year. (But I 'll have to make room for the splits because what's the sense of hatching them if I'm not gonna follow through with an F2 breeding.)

Thanks Cindlady. We eat a lot of venison here and the bear makes a nice rich alternative once in awhile.

Well the second man never showed up to buy chickens. I got my hopes all up that I was going to downsize well and things never seem to work out. Although I know now is the worst time to try and sell any type of animal as noone wants to winter them. I still have 50-60 yet to sell. I did notice when I sold the 6 earlier this week that my chickens are healthy. When I lifted them up I was amazed at how heavy they were, made me feel good about what I'm feeding them. I had a discussion with the man as I feed raw meat to them and always have. He stated that his father taught him to never do that or they would in turn eat each other. I have had others tell me that over the years also. I have been feeding raw meat to my birds for all the years I've raised chickens (over 20) and have yet to have one go cannibalistic. Maybe I'm lucky? I know I won't stop doing it as I feel it's a needed part of their diet. They also get cooked meat if it's scraps from the house but the majority is raw.

I did want to comment on this though to Clark. I also feed my chickens whatever is left over from the house. Usually I cook meats first though. They also eat things that have molded and I have not had a problem. They dont get too much because there are so many of them though! What type of raw meat do you feed? I hope you dont grind them filet mignon or anything like that! About the only raw I could afford to feed mine would be roadkill!

OK--I have my parrot out of his cage and I need to move him more into the center of the room, he round the mealworms!

Judy! (from the other day)

Terri- atm they are getting raw veni. When I clean out my freezers they get everything that was still there from the last cleaning. I have 2 chest and the frig freezer and tend to overstock on meats and breads. The veni is from last hunt that didn't get processed due to my illness and ended up getting some freezer burn. They get the whole quarters to eat on. I don't grind anything for them, they get it as it is. I give them carcasses also from hunting. We have brought them road kill too, I can't see good meat go to waste. Maybe I won't eat it but they sure love it. ATM I'm trapping 3-5 mice a night and I feed them also. On top of the nutrition it gives them something to keep them occupied and also its the cheapest redneck entertainment you'll find. I also feed them snakes when I find them. Some may not agree but to each their own, it works for me.

I have also fed moldy foods from the fridge and breads that were left and haven't had a problem. It never occured to me until I read places on here that it can be harmful. Their are many things that I do that I read on here they say are bad but it hasn't caused me problems. I am glad though to find out about the fermented feed. I am not feeding it to my outside chickens atm at they are getting so much other good stuff but I am feeding it to all the chicks. I'm mixing it a bit different to what is available to me. Split peas, barley, rice, cracked corn, and lentil beans. I have changed the mixture many times over this summer and have found they like the solid grains much better than fermenting pellets, crumbles or mash. I'll experiment more with it next year and hopefully will be able to find a way to store it inside thru the winter. With as many chickens that I have right now I don't have a place to store so many buckets inside.

Chickens are Omnivorous..They do not cook the bugs before eating. I feed fresh raw organ meats. I do not eat many of the chicken livers, gizzards, hearts, brains, sex organs, or intestines. I feed them back to the birds after cleaning and examining. If the meat is loaded with buck shot I do clean it and cook it to make sure I get it all out. If it is freezer burned I do cook the meats. I do cook anything that might have molds to avoid any type of botulism or diseases from molds out of the fridge/freezer.
Over crowding causes cannibalism and poor diet not food.

Sclark - I'd advise not to feed mice to your chickens in case they might have been poisoned elsewhere you don't want your birds to ingest poison.

We never have wasted meat around here, just organs, bones/tendons, etc. and I do not feed moldy things to my birds though! Anything moldy goes into the compost.
