Took Spirit the 14 yro cat to the vet today. Her abdomen has been swallen for a few days. Vet said she's full of fluid.

Gave her a steroid shot and some antibiotics. Almost $80 bucks. DH didn't want me to take her in because money has been very tight, I bet if it were Rudy, he would have been there last week.

Nothing else new ..... night all!

Quote: Totally jealous of you and all your gardening attempts... I have heard about growing potatoes in garbage bags and am interesting in the growing in bales.... Never knew you were to plant Peppers deep going to try that next year, got mine in too late only thing that did really well were the jalapenos... Sometimes I wonder if it is the quality of seed these days, my beets also were poorly and I love love those carrot seed tapes, expensive but oh so worth it in the time it saves planting.

good morning,

killed 2 coons last night after not seeing any for a few weeks,,,think the weather got them moving around in MY yard again. When I stepped out to take the second shot a fox was 10' from my back deck,,,,ducked and ran so fast I had no chance,,,lol

Jim the other "trick" I think you used on my suggestion with the peppers is to always pick all of the flowers off when you plant,,,this definitely is something I learned a few years ago that I think really helps with end production. It's tempting to go for early peppers but the early blooms will set the plants back as they are trying to get established,,,

never did potatoes in a bail, but have raised them laid on the tilled soil and buried under straw mulch,,,works great. Had a friend tell me about raising them in onion bags hung from trees in the south, used some leaves in the bags, watered when needed, claimed it worked well

Wish it was the time of year to start the gardening, not looking forward to the single digits later this week,,,

off to lurk

good morning,, sunny right now..hope it stays that way ..

attempted to catch the last of the BO last night.. they were way out on the flimsy end of the pine branches.. I managed to knock one loose with a piece of pvc pipe, but the netter on the ground missed her.. she ran away into the darkness.. I will carry a net when I go to water them today..

JJ, beans over potatoes ? that would not work for me.. my beans linger too long and the potatoes would crowd them out.. I will see if I can find a picture of my two potato rows..
I have plenty of ground, so I do not have to do companion planting..

I always wanted to plant marigolds with some of my veggies, but Annie was always so set against it.. and don't ask me why .. IDK.. but I am much older now, and maybe next year I will plant whatever and however I want .. what can she do to me ?? cut me off ? HA !! she doesn't even know where I am getting it ....

Dan, right on about the pepper blossom picking,, I forgot I did that.. and another thing to do with tomato planting.. instead of digging them in deep, set them into trenches and lay them flat,, that way the roots will be in the upper warmer part of the ground instead of a foot deep where the soil stays cooler..

this is the first time I ever tried the carrot seed tape,, I am going to see if I can find a small planter wheel where I can make up my own tapes.. maybe use T>paper, or maybe they make a tape I could buy.. they must make a tape,,,the seed company uses it ,, DUH jim,,

bl4, the blue one is already spoken for so you are off the hook,, actually all four of the babies are spoken for.. so go ahead and show the picture..
today one of them is peeking out of the nest box hole.. It will be real soon when they start to venture out..

my cuppa is cold,, better go warm it up..

bbl,,,,,,,,,,jiminwisc......

Hi all

I also wish it were spring instead of fall!!

Oh, comon miss... you know you want to keep him ;-)

Sclark, what is the plan for his week? Just wondering. Keep me posted! :)

The eggs that Angel gave up on are due today. I hope she didn't give up because they are not developed. And I hope they didn't quit when she did. Wish us luck!

Cind, I hope that kitty gets better for you :'(

Thanks for the comments on our house - we've been there for three years now and loving it. It sat empty for a couple of years and was not maintained prior to that, so there has been a ton to do.

jvls: You're right it's a lot of windows - glad Rod's and his laborer (our nephew) are dealing with them and not me. I hope you are able to find yourself a spot to enjoy that sun room this winter. It's a great place to have your cuppa in the morning and chat with the "cheeseheads". I love that little blue parakeet, it reminds me of the one I had as a kid. I may need to get myself a retirement gift of a parakeet . . .

Cuties: I'm with you, all this talk of gardening has me wanting to start up my gardens not put them to rest for the winter.

I don't remember if it was Jim or Dan that mentioned the trench for the tomatoes, but that is how we do it and WOW it makes a huge difference. I'm looking forward to trying the deep planting and bud snipping of the pepper plants. It has been too many years since we've had good peppers. When it comes to carrots, the best luck we've had is planting in patches rather than rows. We also sprinkle radish seeds in with the carrot. Since the radish come up right away, the pulling of the radishes makes room and loosens the soil for the carrots.

Well break is over - back to business.

tip #2 for the day,,,

since it was mentioned planting the maters in trenches, it's real easy if you take the starts and lay all of them on their sides for an hour or two in the sun before you start planting,,,,,they will all make a 90º bend up for the sun,,,not required but another time saver and easier than bending them into submission ;-)

back out to the cold sunshine

yup, now I remember that trick .. we had better plan on going through all of this next spring at planting time, eh?

I caught another chicken a few minutes ago.. the rest of them are real savvy and started giving the danger squawk as soon as I stepped out the back door.. as soon as I touched the ladder they all flew down from the tree and ran away.. this white one was just about to fly when I grabbed her leg..

One of the hen turkeys caught a leg on the top of the fence and died trying to get loose.. this happened during the time after I watered this morning and when I got back home about 2 PM..

I got about a 4 foot piece of 8" pvc pipe from a friend today.. now I can go ahead and start building my next chicken plucker..

My DD$1 planted potatoes in a large container.. she ended up with just one potato, it was about the size of a soccer ball..

Tip # 3 for Tomatoes, add some powdered milk to the soil when planting. The extra calcium will prevent blossom end rot later in the summer.
