Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good evening,, and I hope I don't get labeled as a bad guy for heating my coop.. WHAT break from laying ?? all of my chickens are pullets.. NONE of them has layed an egg until this fall.. I hatched them this spring so that I could start getting eggs for the winter.. I got rid of all of the old ladies..

mother nature did not provide for someone to steal the eggs from the chickens all summer long either.. If left on their own they would lay only about 12 to 14 eggs and hatch them,, maybe do it twice if weather permitted..

and I have a good 6 inches of mixed sh!t and straw on the floor.. and by spring it will be a couple of inches deeper.. that is much warmer than walking barefoot on cold concrete, I figure..

and for the record, I am much older than most on here,, I quit drinking milk before almost all of you were born.. but I eat ice cream, cheese, and pizza, and mac & cheese .. I draw the line at yogurt ..
I suppose eating local beef is much better than big farm beef.. as long as you buy it at the store where no animals were harmed ..

Deli-my BCM has purple feathers...well black feathers with purple opalescence. It's strange! The blk orps has a green tint, but I haven't seen purple before. Do your BCM have purple tinting or are they all striped?
I have black, blue and cuckoo Marans..one of my blacks does have some purple sheen in her feathers..not a desirable feature. It does not effect her egg laying ability. She is a good egg layer and has nice dark eggs. You must have gotten one of her eggs. Green is what you look for in a good quality black bird.

I don't supplement light in the winter because I don't want to force then to lay and burn out in just a couple of years. But I don't keep mine just for laying ability, they are pets too.

If mine don't pay their way, they go.. one way or another..

I do not have any birds over 2 years old.. the pets are an exception.. Huey the goose and his mate.
Tommy the very old turkey.. they would be gone too if it were not for our old guy resident (Ken) who feeds them bread cubes every day..

I guess I am in the wrong league being here on BYC ..

I stay mainly because I know so many of the people..

Hello everyone!Question time!
So I am getting quails in the spring and I was reading about how to house them and most people say to use wire flooring but I really don't like to do that so would it be ok to just use a solid surface for the flooring and clean it every so often? And if you have a pic of your coop that would be great see if you are willing?
Thanks in advance for any help

Last Spring I bought 4 white 'Texas A&M'...1 rooster and 3 hens. I built a cage for them with a solid floor. They are VERY messy so I had to clean it daily. One of the hens got picked on so I had to separate her, then the rooster started picking on the other two so I took him out too. I then had 3 cages to clean every day. The rooster was loud and sometimes started 'crowing' at 3am and the eggs were nothing special. I had bought these with the thought of hatching more to raise for meat but they were such a bother for the small amount of meat/eggs that I gave up the idea.

I hope you have a better outcome than I did. Good luck, let us know how it works out for you.

Quote: I had button quail a couple of times.. I built a wire cage about a foot tall and 2 feet wide by 3 fee long.. it has a wire bottom, but I made a mat out of straw .. it had good drainage and they stayed dry ..

I also made a nest box for them,, they never used it..

I tried raising them in a tractor with no bottom.. they did not do well directly on the ground.. they picked on each other mercilessly .. In order to keep them from killing each other,,, I butchered the last six.. they were delicious .. I had lots of eggs from the second batch that I had.. I hatched a lot of them,, and I made a quart of pickled eggs.. it took 50 eggs to fill a quart jar.. lots of work for something I don't even enjoy eating.. I gave the eggs to my nephew..

Last summer, I gave the whole flock of quail to a young boy who is into birds.. with the stipulation that he would give me eggs if I ever wanted them ..

Thought I would throw this, out here....anyone getting rid of an incubator this season? I have a friend who is tight for money, but wants to give her kids a chick hatching kit. Thought I would ask back later

You all know I love a good debate. ;)

Anyhoo, if any of you are up for it, I will be needing hatching eggs this Spring. 48 will fit the bill. Breed does not matter, I do not need show quality bird eggs either, just fertilized ones. I will let you all know when to start saving them if you are willing!

I will be so happy when the Springer is where he belongs....... he needs to start his therapy ASAP! He is a good dog, but really needs the pros to deal with his growling issues.....

Tomorrow I think I will start making my Christmas cookies/candies........ I have a LOT to do!

Holy Frozen F@ck Batman!!!

I can;t seem to get warm. I need to get the jammies on and may be a second pair of socks for bed! This crap is ridiculous so early in the season.

Jim, Georgie doesn't need a mate. I'll never be as lucky to get another nice and mild goose. I like her just fine the way she is!

Unka, I'm going to want some nice blue egg laying birds in the spring. Chicks that is. I'm thinking you know someone who can help me out?? ;-) May be you want a swap for Welsh Harlequin eggs, or Dutch hookbills eggs, or Australian Spotteds eggs (if they dont fly away on me!)

Eventually I'll get an update post written for here. But not tonight. It's so cold the nippies could fall off and then be frozen where they land...
