Been MIA for a while, just poking my head in to say howdy!

Hope everyone survived that ridiculous arctic blast; we had the wood stove cranking and kept the house toasty, the birds handled it well with a couple lamps. It feels downright tropical today.

DH had to go to the neighbors and shot a possum that was in her coop's nest box.... Feathers all over the place but everyone lived... well 'cept for the possum... Want possum skin leg warmers instead BF4?

I know Dorchester well... my aunt and uncle still live there nice little town that has not changed in 50 years, My dad always got his deer sausage done there at Pinter's... wonder if it is still there?

Stay up right everyone hope it doesn't amount to very much ice!

New addition at Casa Schwanke!


Riley is a 3 month old puppy that friends needed to re-home.

After a day and a sleepover we decided he fit in perfectly!

I found a harness, bridal, cart, and riding bridal for Brownie!!! We are picking it all up tomorrow!! I am soooo excited :-D maybe even more than syd! All for $135! I think it is an awesome deal! We need a bit for one of the bridals, and a strap for the saddle yet. I hear there is a place called coyote's in Oshkosh that sells that stuff. We will have to wait for another day. This find will break the bank ;-)
Ellis is also laying again. She is currently paired with sauce. Our blrw. Excited for that too!

I was supposed to go to town and play cards.. the weather dictates that I stay at home..
tomorrow I suppose I will have to start Ollie up and plow us out ..

one egg short of a dozen today.. the chicken the dog killed was probably #12 ..

I am going to switch layer feed.. I called the mill today and they have a mix of their own.. he said it was higher than the 12% protein I am using .. I think the chickens will like it better,, it is mostly ground grains..

I called and made the appt for the geese.. On Jan 27th we are taking a ride .. I am keeping only one pair of the cross breed african/buffs .. and the trio of Sebastopols ..

the new oven element should be here on Monday .. It was less $$$ to get it from the local appliance store than anything we found online ..

I should get rid of all my birds and get a horse and buggy ..

I decided not to pour a new floor in the chicken coop.. I will just pour a concrete curb/sill across the doorway and cut the bottom of the door shorter .. then I will replace all of the existing ceiling tiles with plywood.. I have a suspended ceiling in there..

That icy rain is pretty nasty..please drive safe everyone who needs to drive this weekend.
Birds all survived that nasty cold snap and I sure hope we do not have another one.

I plan on starting my hatching in the next week or two. I have my BLRW all set up today and my GLO's and my Ameracuana's.
How long does everyone keep them housed together before they start to collect eggs? I used to do three weeks but I was told that long was not necessary..I know for a fact my silkie male breeds every female.

I am butchering out extra Gold laced males that do not have good lacing. If anyone wants a Gold Laced Orpington male that has poor lacing let me know. I will butcher them out in 4 weeks. They are 10 weeks old now. I would trade them for pure breed hatching eggs..or for the price of a butchering male. They might get half way decent lacing, but I have no idea...I have really nice laced males so I do not need these.

Last night we had 4 cops race past the house. I have no idea what was going on, they all ended up at a place on the street behind us and blocks away. I am sure we will find out eventually.

Everyone stay safe! If you do not need to go out, stay home! When my youngest was on his way home from school today, he found an elderly gent who had fallen on the sidewalk. Ended up calling my BIL (since he is on the Fire Dept. and closer to the scene) and had him go help out. Somebody came and pick the guy up, so I think he must have been ok.
