I'm not vajazzling anything!!!!!!

How are the shells on the eggs you are getting? Are your girls getting enough calcium? What do you feed your birds? If you don't mind me asking. The eggs might be getting cracked/broken from hens stepping on them in the nest boxes if the shells are weak. Then it will become an all-u-can-eat diner.

Is this girl molting, or could someone be pulling her feathers out? Is she lower on the pecking order? I had a roo who would let thegirls pull his neck feathers out. I assumed it was from not enough protein in their diet. When I increased the protein, the feather pulling stopped.

The shells vary. My younger ones are super hard and the older hens are softer. They have oyster shells, get a layer mix and in the winter I give them scratch with BOSS... sometimes a block too.

What did you use for extra protein, a supplement?

I am not sure if she is motling or not, sure seems to be lasting a llloooonnngggg time! can they molt this time of year?

Ugh! I need a vacation! I've been home sick the past two days, and spent it (with a fever I might add) hand feeding my roo/checking hime very couple hours, collecting fecal samples, medicating and changing water several times per day (couldn't use metal waterer and plastic dog dish didnt hold much water), then tonight found my big beautiful blue cochin with at least one torn toenail which I tried using bluKote & Stop Bleed(Yes my hands are all stained purple now-thanks Q.E.) and then trying to catch the barn cat to lock her in with food since the barn is sealed up tight during the cold weather. These pets need to get with the game or else I will need to hire a full time care giver for them!! Back to work tomorrow too. Peekachu was eating like he was starving tonight (not drinking much though) then found him on the floor in a corner when I locked him up=put him back up on the roost and he has his head hanging down off/below the roost again. Hope the Corid helps things out.

What brand of layer? I (and others) have had terrible issues of soft shells when using Layena. Regardless of brand, you can help the older ones by mixing some oyster shell directly in with your feed.

For extra protein, I feed extra meat scraps, eggs, or a handful of dry cat food & increase the BOSS/decrease the scratch ratio.

Dan mentioned mixing game bird grower with his layer feed. Maybe he can give you more details.

Happy snowing morning... uugg MORE snow . Had to shovel a path for the girls lol. They sure liked yesterday!
I am having a couple issues. 1 - I have an egg breaker/eater...............how on earth do I fix this!!! I am barely getting any eggs as it is and now miss egg eater is taking them all!!
2 - One of my chickens is losing all her feathers on her neck. It was this way earlier this fall but I didn't pay too much attention. She isn't even a year old. She doesn't act sick or itchy. Really just looks like a continuous molt... is that even possible??

New job is going ok. Learning new stuff is always frustrating. I will be looking for about 4 - 6 Black Copper Marans for the spring if anyone will have any to sell.

Snowed In Here...the storm actually parked over the north west part of Waupaca co...we have 12" now and it's still coming down lightly. It will be a big job tomorrow cleaning up.

If you actually catch a bird pecking open eggs that are otherwise good, then it can become a real problem. The others can learn the bad habit real fast. Good advice with upping the protein. I have found a curtain over the front of the nest boxes with a slit for entry and exit works wonders.....egg eaters can't eat eggs they can't see. I've had to cull a relentless hen that waited for the hens to lay and would climb in the nest box as soon as they jumped out without curtains. Just a idea for you kj.

Good Luck angiebubs...I still suggest to isolate inside with a heat lamp. Good thing you didn't overmedicate with the wormer...it's way overused IMO.

Loved the flick CC....now if everyone could get their dogs to be so well behaved, it would be peace on earth for the backyard flocks.

Hey cc rabbit question(s). I found a lady on cl. I was interested in her "mini rex". She explained how she was getting over run. I backed off a little. She insisted she could not send pics. Then a few days later, she called and begged me to come take them. Marital issues. Upon arrival, we discover there is a litter. 3 does and one buck in that pen. 2 babies dead. Pen underneath, 3 bucks. Two with genitalia injuries.
Question 1; is it ok to use surgical sollution in that area? Should I allow it to scab? I'm thinking keep it open. No sign of infection. Very fresh wound.
Question 2; another buck has a wound right on the penis. Surgical sollution ok there? I am thinking maybe not...
All are separated. And seem to be doing ok. I am a bit nervous. Because she was completely out of food and could not send any to mix. I am feeding free choice hay to up the fiber to hopefully prevent stress induced diarrhea. And electrolytes.
Open to other suggestions

The snow is finally tapering off, thank goodness! Helped my DH get the cars unearthed and the driveway cleared..... and then watched Blacklist. I just LOVE that show!

Tomorrow is suit shopping day!

I hate shopping for dressy work clothes....... yuck. I am such the jeans and T-shirt person...... but I need the job so I will bite the bullet and do what I need to do.

So much time outside.... I am pooped!
