Well been awhile for me but reading the last week or so has been interesting and so sorry to hear about the fire, although it appears you escaped with a whole lot less than it could have been. S Clarkl so sorry about the roof and all, certainly has been a rough New Years for you and yours.
I planted some seeds today. Impatiens, Coleus and Copra Onions from Jung's. Sad to say there were only about 30 Impatiens seeds in the packet so I need to buy another pack. But I do have extra onion seeds think right around 100, if someone wants them pm me and I will get the right out in the mail. I have never grown onions from seed before so looking forward to seeing how this all turns out.
Making Pot Roast soup today, was going to be split pea and ham too, but the ham got old... it had white spots on it so cutting that off and the girls will have ham for the next few days. It smells good, and still nice and pink...

Take care all!

Here you go Zeke, applesauce oatmeal cookies with apple chunks and pecans!

The Goop is a medical salve that Cind makes and usually has at the Bash.

Thanks chickenscratch. That is definitely y plan as soon as it warms up. Its so frustrating as I went over 2 years with no issues and now I can't seem to figure out what the deal is. I did a full parasite fecal flotation, I did a proactive worming last summer, have treated for respiratory (thats doesn't seem to be an issue), treated for Cocci, examine the birds daily, give them sprouts several times per week, vitamins, they are laying pretty well for this time of year and eggs show no signs of distress, none of the flock show any signs of mites/lice (check them at night with a light), have a dust bath with ash/dirt in their coop, their combs/wattles are starting to red up for spring, just not sure what the deal is. I do use the deep litter method and have done this for years without issue; only change to that was not using diamaticious earth this time as I discovered that stops the organic break down. I guess all I can do is continue monitoring. Of the 5 I have lost in the past 6 months, I do know that one was for sure from Cocci, one is believed to be a heart attach (after discussing with vet and the symptoms), and one was a crippled chicken I had that survived over 2 years. So since one died from Cocci, and a hen died a few weeks after-I am assuming that was also from Cocci. This deal with my Roo-I have no idea!!!! The only thing that makes sense would be Cocci. Has anyone else noticed a thick clear mucous drool with a chicken that had Cocci/died from it?
Sometimes over medicating is worse than the illness..

building immunities is important..if you DL I would not be cleaning out all off that good work

Chickens die and sometimes it is best that they do. We had a really tuff winter.

My thinking is controversal and my opinion on here causes arguments. so I am going to clarify that this is just my opinion.
I have been butchering out my chickens for 35 years and I always do autopsys on any dead birds I find..thanks goodness they are few and far between.
Many males birds have a weak heart this time of year with the added stress of winter and high testosterone starting..it causes water on the heart..do an autopsy..you will find an enlarged heart and blood pooled around his heart..you have done nothing wrong...this happens all the time and is perfectly normal. The thick mucus is from the build up.part of the death..and normal

Nice to see you check in..

The coops are all locked up....tonight it's shrimp stir fry with carrots, sparegus, mushrooms, onions, celery, served on a bed of rice. The carrots from the garden are dark orange and sweet as can be. I was gonna say sweet as me, but don't wanna exaggerate too much.

To bad sharper turned out to be quite the jerk, eh! nuff said.

good afternoon, yep, chickens die.. you can depend on that,, that is why I keep two of each kind of rooster going into winter.. If you keep only one, it will find a way to die.. If you keep two, they both usually live .. Murphy's law ..

Mom Gill, stop in more often..
We are missing so many people from even last year,, Judge, FT, TomSki, Heather, I shouldn't have started listing them, , I can't remember them all ,, If your name should be here, then check in.
I know BarlRacer checks in, but doesn't post very often.. Hi >>

I just took the chickens more water.. It is so nice to not have to slip on a jacket, hat and gloves..

I do have to change the light bulb in the coop.. it burned out last week and Annie put one of those curly duds in there ,, A candle puts out more light that those useless things do .. with my bad eyes, I need LIGHT !!
