BBP - No mold in the basement. I have pine shavings down for bedding. I have electrolytes in the water. Brooder temp directly under the heat lamp is 98. I have medicated chick feed. I am at a loss. Maybe it was just to cold for them...they had a heat pack in with them. Its just strange that they seem all happy and running around and within a couple of hours it is a different story! Plus the two that all of the sudden have leg issues...just weird!

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the sugar. Should I do that along with the electrolytes?

Turn over the wood chips to make sure they are not wet underneath. They can mold pretty fast in the right conditions. No drafts? The only thing I can think of is they were just too stressed from the cold & the shipping. It sounds like you are doing everything else right. Try putting the sugar right in the water with the electros for a day & see if it helps. I can't see that it would hurt. Good luck and keep us updated, please.

Ok wierd question for guinea owners..are the eggs bigger than normal chicken eggs. I got an oddly shaped huge egg today. If it is a chicken I am guessing triple yoke ...but really oblong and not symmetrically oblong but wierd...will get pic tomorrow

I think and hope (all fingers and toes crossed to not jinx it) that the snow and bitter cold is done now. Surely had enough for at least the next 2 years!

Anyways, just fired up our incubators this weekend, getting them all ready for once our pheasants decide to mate and lay eggs. Gonna trial hatch and hopefully sell them (Reeves, Red Goldens, Alaskan Snow, Ringnecks and Lady Amherst) either as eggs or chicks.

Today we put in our newly received Ancona eggs and I already can't WAIT for them to hatch end of this month and see what we get for chicks and colorings too! Can't wait to add some more duckies to our flock.

Would love to have some chicken eggs (like australop and ameraucanas and maybe some brown leghorns) to put in also, but not sure where to get them up here and then there is the dang money issue... *sigh*

Oh well, gonna call it a night and anticipate watching my duckies play in a pool of water again tomorrow! Gosh they were getting sooo dirty. Lol

kristip..... guinea eggs are about the size of a pullet egg (maybe a bit bigger) and they are kinda "top" shaped.

The Toms were at it when I went to close up tonight. Geeze, I tried to get them to take it outside but couldn't steer them out. They at least must think spring will come.

Terri, I am planning approximately 2ish pm. I wNt to be safe incase I work! Lol I am getting excited for the chicken chat! And Sydney is over excited for her silkies ours chicks here are doing well. And I broke the news to hubby last night that I would like a giant mobile chick run. Even though the hawk from last year took a hike, I am worried more will be hanging around once they see we have a whole bunch of half grown chickies running around outside. He was...........thrilled lol

Any Wisconsin folks have and standard size Brahmas that are not bred down hatchery types? We have a couple hatchery birds and they are about the size of a standard hen and my other breeds are also smaller than normal. Looking to revamp the flock with some better stock. I'd be interested in getting some hatching eggs sometime over the next couple months.

Speaking of shipped chicks and dying

this is simply not the time of year to be getting chicks in Wisconsin. The stress of mailing and cold will make the chick shipment pretty shocky. Constant dipping head and making them drink several times an hour should do the only thing you can do. Because it is a few days it has to be lack of drinking and still in shock. Chicks need reminders. There moms tell them all day long to drink..they make special call noises to get them to eat and drink.and to show them what is good and what they should be eating and drinking.

last year I visited a friend that is a breeder, she had old towels down in the brooders for the young birds, think it was to keep dust down in the house (she moves them to heated outbuilding at 10 days or so). I tried that and the chicks seemed to like it, less possibility of them eating the shavings, better traction for young legs, no dust. Just have lots of old towels and change them out a few times a day.
