Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Everyone was gone for the day, no apartments in that Building, not sure about the little one next to it. Not sure what was in that one at all, it was one of those little shops that kept changing every few years. I think no one was hurt. I'm wondering how the restaurant on the corner fared.(Flippy"s) my son gets food there a couple times a month because they deliver. It was very lucky that the bank next door (to the other side) had a drive thrugh between. It could have become allot worse. People on FB are hoping they can at least save the outside of the building and build up the inside again. Problem is, it's a very old building.

OMG I know exactly where that is! They have really nice, quality furniture. Such a shame... The downtown area where I live has lots of old stores too, and when the buildings get torn down and replaced they try to keep the look and feel of the old buildings.

Hello I'm new here and I am new to ducks! I have 2 ducks and 2 chickens Bailey Paisley Areoura and McCnugget how do u guys house your birds in the burtal Wisconsin weather

Just go ahead and build them a nice duck house that you can get into easy to clean out and/or fluff up. It should be wind and draft free, but with ventilation for the hot summer months. Also, my duckies know there is no water inside the duck house at night when they're locked up. Keeps down the mess some. Just make sure they have enough headroom, as ducks don't like it to have something too close to their heads.

Also, for the winter time (especially this last brutal one) we put all the ducks and chickens together and put 2 heat lamps in there. The water tub was real close to the heat lamps for the water wouldn't freeze all the way, or simply use heated water bowls. They just need the water deep enough to dunk their heads in to clean their eyes and nostrils. Change it several times a day and it should be good.

If they get too dirty in the winter (like my little piggies) take them into a splash proofed bathroom and let them bathe in your bathtub for about 20 min to clean themselves. After that let them dry off and preen a bit inside (about half hour or more) before bringing them back outside again, preferably with access to the heat lamps. That's about all you can do, besides fattening them up for the winter season come fall!

Congrats to the best time of your life 1876...it's why I enjoy heritage breeds so much....and don't care about a profit...that's just a imagination anyway, making money...IMO... that's for the stock market...

Thanks, I chuckle when people say they are going to get into chickens so they can sell the eggs and make some money. Very seldom do we make more than it costs for feed.

and all the time you put into them. I would rather pick 2 or 3 breeds and focus on them.

when I had ducks, and geese, I have a shallow mud/mortar mixing tub that I bought at Menard/s.
it is tough black plastic about 8 inches deep and 2 feet by 3 feet .. I do mean tough,, I have used mine year round for about 7 years now..

there was no way I was going to bring 15 geese and 20 ducks into my bathroom..

It doesn't matter what the outside temperature is,, the ducks and geese will take a bath every day..

each day, I dump out the rectangular ice cube and put fresh water in it.. no need to baby them.. they never get really wet to the skin.. in fact if they have their daily bath the feathers are so oily the feathers don't even get wet ..

I have seen it so cold that the water froze into tiny round BB's and rolled off of their backs..
as long as it is liquid, the water is above 32F.. it actually feels warm to them ..

And here my spoiled brats come stay in the house when the temp drops below -20 at night. They get to swim in the indoor spa aka my bathtub!

my dad had a bathtub outside to keep his minnows for fishing in.
us kids thought it was great fun to put a couple of ducks in the water and watch them dive and catch the minnows.. dad could never figure out why he never had many minnows ..

We only took 2 at a time inside to bathe. Due to all the snow our "pools" were lost under snow and our plastic storage tubs simply weren't big enough or easy for them to access. And we did change the water after each pair of bathers. Lol. Plus, I didn't have to worry about freezing some body parts off while watching them! Cuz, where is the fun if you can't get to watch your duckies antiques while bathing and preening?!

as long as I know that they're having fun, I am content to check on them from INSIDE the kitchen window..

Hi to all the newbies.

Glad noone was hurt in the fire. I saw that on the news tonight. I hate when those old buildings go.

DHs gig went very well. The bar was kinda on the small side, but it was very nice. They must have liked them, because they got another gig booked there in June.

Not much else new. Sweet dreams, all!
