Hi fellow cheesehead chickeners!!! We have had our flock of 3 for about a year and inherited a 4th yesterday. She is an 8 month old Leghorn. We have 2 easter eggers and a I believe a gold star. Well the leghorn layed her 1st egg at the house and the yolk was green!!! She came from a farm so I am wondering if maybe there was something in the feed she was getting. We will be keeping an eye on her. The rest of the hens are well being hens and not very nice these 1st few days but things are improving. Glad to see so many chicken peeps from WI

Is it possible for a broody to lay?
the way it should work..

the hen will lay a clutch of eggs, might take about 2 weeks to get the number she wants ..
then she quits laying and starts sitting..
she will not lay eggs anymore until these eggs hatch,, and then if she raises the chicks, she probably won't lay during that period either..

If something happens to the cycle, like her eggs get taken or destroyed, she will begin to lay eggs again until she has the number she wants, then go back to line two and read again..

to answer the question,, can she lay eggs ? probably,, will she lay eggs probably not..

TRHMKE welcome!
Clark, those are some awesome pics!!
Long day here. Didn't work 12's! Butdid get rid of the 12's to take the kiddos to the dentist and haircuts. And just running errands. Man I wish there was more then 24 hours in a day!

All I know is I got 6 eggs today and I have 6 hens. Either someone laid overnight, someone laid 2, or my broody laid.

Last I looked I still had 2 sitting on eggs. My original doesn't want to give up any to the "newcomer" broody, but anytime the original broody gets up, guess who tries to steal her eggs? The embryos must be making noise or something (doubt it they have 12/13 days left), but the "newcomer" knows somehow that they are in there. It just amazes me how their instinct/senses just know! I've only hatched twice and each time I've had a hen become broody mid-way through. Simply amazing!
