Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morni g all!
Clark, in the fall we will be selecting through who stays and goes for blrw. And then selling them off in probably pairs only. That way the roosters go too ;) we will have quite a few to choose from!
Del, good for yl u selling them quick! We have a couple blrw cockerals to sell. Not sure what to list them at. So just have not got around to it ...
Jim, hope that bator hots 99○ for you!
Sorry to hear about the duckies!

Delisha,

Where do you go to pick strawberries??

good morning again,, If you figure your labor is worth anything, the pick your own berries is worth the money.. I can spend a few hours building something to sell instead of hoeing strawberries for that amount of time..

If I ever would try strawberries again, I would do just one row and not a patch.. a 30 foot row will produce all the berries I need .. maybe someday ..

I think I have a handle on that thermostat.. I lowered the temp and am sneaking up a degree or two at a time..

the fan covered up the vent hole, so we will have to drill a new one or two in a different location..

I have two dozen eggs to set from my hens, not counting what we should collect today..

I think I will start bator #2 today instead of next Monday.
there, it is on.. that didn't take long, did it ??

I have to modify a few more trays for stacking ..I have only one available right now..

quick question for today.... is there any thought that the first pullet guinea egg would hatch or is it too small... (it looks about bantam chicken size so pretty small) My male guinea left a week ago tonight and he was doing his job...dont I remember that you have 2 weeks that eggs should be fertile after roo is gone?

thanks

It prolly won't hatch, but what have you got to lose by trying ? one egg ?
Where did your roo go ?
I have about 15 too many roos.. come get one..

I almost had the temp right on when all of a sudden it went ZOOOM up to 120*F.
did I mention ? I HATE SOLID STATE THERMOSTATS !!!!!

I turned on the second Sportsman today.. then I figured out how to stack a tray on the top shelf, too..
I have to sacrifice 24 spaces from the holders, but I gain 72 eggs overall..

Soooo, by being able to stack all 3 shelves, I can increase my capacity from
288 eggs, to a total of 552 eggs..

I can do that in two of the Sportsmans, in the older model Sportsman I can
not stack the trays, so I am limited to 288 in there..

but overall I can incubate 116 dozen eggs .. which is 1392 eggs ..

Apparently it's spring (according to the chickens.) I have 5 brooding right now. It's a good thing I have a 10 box nesting set up.

And Deli... Lacey my blrw from you... She was such a pancake today I was afraid she was dead! One loud screech from her cleared that right up. I've only had a few broodies, but it's pretty funny how flat they can get. Also my chocolate Orpington Ganache is broody. I'm going to see what eggs of hers are still around and tuck them under. They haven't been separated though, so I guess we'll see what come out. ;-)

Soggy evening all!
Yes the incident with the 2 eaten ducklings... Yes he DID learn from it and is still down, barely able to speak or look at my dog. But honestly, can you blame her if dessert is set right in front of her?!?

Anyways, our batch of Anconas (all the rest of them) started hatching. We got one dead in the shell after it piped (don't ask me why), 5 out and beeping happily under the heat lamp, and even one little red golden pheasant hatched!!! :D didn't expect for that little egg to hatch but it did and is now snuggling with the last 2 arrivals under the heat lamp. So cute seeing as it is only half the size of the ducklings! Lol

Still got a few more to go but there is still time for them. Just not sure bout the scovy egg. Didn't look too promising at last candling before lockdown...

Our yard is converting more and more into a big lake. Might let the ducks out into it tomorrow again if the weather permits. And once the sunshine and warmer weather is finally back, I will even let the older little guys out to find mosquito larvae! ;)

Here is a pic of our lake:

My Rouen is still sitting on her nest switching with the Pekin every now and then. They should be really close to hatching now too, as we just had 2 of those eggs hatch in our bator that we "egg napped" right before she started sitting. The suspense...!

Oki gonna make my rounds to feed/water before night time now. And then handle our bigger babies a bit more as they get into their teenage flightiness we wanna avoid. Read you all later!

And thanks again for all your sentiment. All I can say is just: I told him so!!! With a big head shake and a grin.

I really don't understand the selfish, ignorant people that outnumber the intelligent people in this country. What happened to survival of the fittest? We need to let nature take its course. I talked to a farmer today who just got new neighbors. They had the nerve to complain about the smell!!! This blows my mind. Hey, idiots, don't move next to a farm! And where do you think your food comes from? I'd love to push these clueless morons into the manure pit and watch them try to swim.

Ok...more neighborhood news. Was reading the newspaper when I saw a picture of a neighbor of ours that is caddy-corner across the road from us. They have a bunch of kids (I really have no idea how many) that don't go to school and the family doesn't have a vehicle. The dad is a work from home computer guy and I've never met or seen the mom. Anyways, to get back to the newspaper, he was arrested on numerous accounts of criminal sexual assult, activity, child pornography, and 2 accounts of sexual abuse. The kids have never understood why we refuse to allow them into people's houses to visit or spend the night when we do not know the parents well. I used this article as reinforcement as to why we have that rule and how it is meant to keep them safe from potential situations like this neighbor (whose kids our 2 younger ones have played with in their yard). So as the neighborhood across the street has had thieves, a murderer, a senile man, and a pervert/sexual predator the positive news is that they are all in (or soon to be in) jail.

Meanwhile, on this side of the road....Theo is learning that he has a voice and woke me up barking at 3am and is very observant of the neighbors (which is an incredibly positive think, eh?), he and the baby chicks are growing quickly. Momma hen is keeping the chicks real close and hasn't decided to allow them to venture to the run. I'm hoping for her to do that this weekend.

DD13 is going to Springfield, IL on a class trip leaving tomorrow morning at 5am and returning Saturday evening around 6pm.

My greens and peas are coming up and the strawberry, raspberry, and rose plants are up too. I purchased a dehydrator a few months ago and finally got it out and have washed the trays. I plan to wash and slice the beets and jicama to make the chips over the next few days.

I'll stop here before I have a FT post. Good night all
