Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

One of my young turkeys keeps attacking my broody hens. I don't know if it doesn't like the noises they make or what. But that turkey is now for sale. I believe its a hen and she's a bourbon red.

it sound to me like you do not have enough space..If the hens have an escape, you can let them go with the flock.. freeranging is the best scenario for this.
if they are penned up too close, then you have what you are going through..

letting the chickens look at each other through a fence or out of a cage does nothing in the progress of integrating..

I have no idea of what conditions you have for a pen, so it is difficult to recommend a solution.

Jim, I thought you were talking about my turkey situation at first. They are free range but that little monster hangs out around the coop and pesters everyone in a nest box and any hens with chicks. But you were talking to Angiebubs and in her situation it may be that they are too confined. If they were out free ranging they would be too busy to sit and bother the others. Unfortunately, that's not an option for her.

bbp, this is for you,, whack that turkey,, they are delicious deep fried.
I am having lots of trouble typing. IDK what is going on,,
but I am going to shut down for the night right now. very frustrating ..

If the turkey was bigger it would be going on a trip with my meat birds on Wednesday. But she's too little yet. I fed these meaties a soy-free organic ration. At $23/bag, and losing 1/4 of my birds to a dog, these are some expensive chickens. There will not be any meat wasted from these.

Idk what to say for sure then Angiebubs... ours are free range. And that has worked so far for me. They are integrated at about a week. As soon as they seem strong enough to get up and down our coop steps with mom. Because I water outside. Although, our flock has newbies constantly added. And our top rooster Rae never allows one to pick on another. Even our duck Quack from Terri attacks the turkey hens when they try to pick on the broodies. Bbp, I think it is a turkey thing... I think we are very lucky to have those two here. They keep things peaceful.
Angiebubs, maybe it is best to add one group at a time. When I add young chicks without a broody, I always do it when I will be home for an entire day so I can keep tabs. But I also have a pen outdoors that only chicks can fit into. I provide chick feed and water in their safe area. They learn to follow the teenagers there. Is there a way you can provide a spot for the broodies to send their chicks?

Everybody had out and play time in the pool today (of course not the chickens or pheasants. They prefer dust baths) and we put the next batch of duckling into the condos. Only one more batch inside. Yeay!

BBP and Angie, hope you find a solution for your bird problems. It can be annoying if they're not nice to each other...

Went to get feed and groceries, ducks free ranged in groups, otherwise we would have to break up fights non stop as most are maturing, and dinner grilled on the fire pit. Now I'm sore and tired and looking forward to a couple of days of "rejuvenating" in town before coming back to a (probable) big mess again. Oh they joys of duckies!

This week I'm planning on going through the ducklings to see who I'm gonna take to the swap in Wheeler on 19th. Gotta downsize and we have too many males. Hopefully we'll be able to sell some pheasants too, now that we're allowed to sell. Woot!

Taking my sore behind to bed now to get some rest while he is still (or should I say again?) on the lookout for the coons. At least I will not get kicked til he decides to come to bed! Lol.

Hi All!

Pepper finally got the "kids" out of the brooder box. I thought she would take them back in at night but nooo. I just checked. She was on the community roost with 1 chick on her back. The other 2 were on the floor peeping for momma!

Last time she was broody she hatched some keets. It didn't take too long for her to get tired of them and a rooster took over the mom duties. I hope she dose better this time, so far doesn't look so good.

That's it.....Night All!

WOW--just got through about 250 posts! I thought I was kinda keeping up...oh well, the fan feels pretty good in here. It is humid already...the washer id done and I will be heading out shortly to hang some sheets to dry. Then maybe do some gardening and some other puttering around in the barn...oh yeah...I am on VACATION this week!

I still am the Superintendent for the Fair but that is easy stuff....the judging was on Saturday and we got all set up on Sunday so we are good here!
Took my foster dog the the fireworks and he was so good! He sat on the blanket and cocked his head and watched them! The only ones he didnt care for were the ones that sizzle as they come down...what a good boy. (yes it is the Pittie I had at the bash)

Sounds like it has been rough times for lots of us with dogs lately! May they all meet in a great place and talk about us!
THanks for the condolences about Elliott BTW. Our one BC still thinks she is hiding somewhere I think...even though she saw her and knows that she was dead....

Looks like there are some new peeps close to me! WildSam I have a large flock of Toulouse if you get down Madison way...
I have some ad out there and have had 4 people call for ducks this weekend and 3 for goats! Wish I knew where I put the ad...ducks wont be ready until late August!

Well, since I took the week off to accomplish something I guess I better give it a try! Already got the barn and 3 coops done! Still could use some touch ups though...at least the birds have more room now.

Have a fantastic day! TerriO
(PS) If anyone wants to hit a deer for me I will take it!
