Wildsam - I think will go out and mow the lawn and see if I can bring some rain here. Thank you for the great idea!

good evening,

I too mowed some lawn,, we need some rain here, too.. I didn't mow all of the lawn,, because we need only a little bit of rain..

I also staked up two leaning plum trees and cut down one that I did not like where it was growing.

I stretched out about 300 feet of hose and watered the new lawn seeding ..(twice) ;
If that doesn't bring rain, I might have to wash the car ..

I killed a small guinea last night.. I went to close the door on the lean to and never looked up.. there were about a half dozen guineas sitting on the top of the door.. when I swung it closed, I must have broke her neck.. whoops, sorry ..

I am thinking I am going to re-arrange the teeth on my 3 pt cultivator and space them equally; like a drag.. I use it more like a drag than a cultivator anyway ..

I trimmed random branches off of some of the trees as I was mowing.. If they touch me when I am sitting on the mower, they become history .. I have a whole bucket full on the ground.. will have to pick them up and haul to the burn pile..

Busy work weekend. Between work that pays...also worked on broiler coop.

Went in for supper.....and hawk came for supper.

Sorry cuties...one of the marans (cockerel) was on the menu. My 1st loss in 3yrs.

Letting them out to range I knew I would eventually have losses. Always thought 1st loss would be from the broilers.

Work & free time are both outdoors. What a summer to work outdoors. Even the ground nests are a couple of weeks behind. Just started getting stung on job sites last week. A small price for a great summer.

last week when I was poking around in some pretty heavy brush, I kept thinking that sooner or later I would hit a ground nest.. didn't happen.. the guineas must be doing their job..

I did find a couple of ant mounds.. that surprised me.. usually the chickens take care of those.

We've found two ground nests at our place. What are they usually? German yellow jackets?
I don't know the names of bees.. but sometimes they are larger than our honey bees, and sometimes they are a species that are only about 3/8 inch long.. I am sure there are many other kinds.. those large ones are nasT ..

I assume Yellow jackets. Sorry not a expert on them. But I try to scout every site I'm digging on, and flag their holes.. Typically August until a hard frost.
Could write on book on my experiences with them, and could have starred in a comedy movie or two if I had been filmed.. Thankful I'm not allergic to their stings. Their numbers appear to be up this year...at least in my work area.

Hey guys :) busy on vacation!
We had a ground nest last year. We dumped gas in and lit a fire. That didn't work. So we soaked it with the hose for a couple of days. That did the trick.
Kildare, no worries. We have lost chicks to hawks here too. It is a risk we take free ranging. How are the rest doing? I would love pics!
jim, sorry to hear abput the guinea. We had the same idea of yard work. Trimmed qukte a few trees. And scott finished the flagstone on the pond ♡

Miss, cute cakem must have been hard since you are usually such a perfectionist ;) I was sorry to hear about another job falling through.
Cind, glad to hear the turkey.
I will attempt a pond picture.

The kiddos got to ride the big ponies at the rodeo :)
and with five kids here Brownie got a real workout today. I already warned them he is young. And will be resting his joints tomorrow ;) I got the big AAAWWWWW
Maybe Scott is impressed with all of the hard work we did. And since Brownie is such a good boy, he brought up getting a second larger pony :) I will try to remain calm. And not push! But he is right, Sydney is already a bit big on him.
