Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good afternoon,

I am taking a break .. have two legs glued up and two more to go.. waiting for Annie to bring me some more gorilla glue,,

will be cutting out the aluminum feather plate this afternoon,, then it is all downhill from there on..
checked the usps tracer for my rubber plucker fingers.. they are supposed to be delivered today..

we are down to 2 geese from the 3 I kept.. IDK what happened to the 3rd goose.. I have a hunch Frankie was "playing" with it and got too rough..

the shop is staying JUST warm enough to work in..

is anybody getting used to this cold weather yet ? if it would get up to 30^ F and that feels warm, then I would say yes ..

ETA: I can't believe everybody went to the Badger game except me..

I got the featherplate all cut out ,, It looks perfect ..

Whirlwind week here: Mike was laid off this past week-dept cut of 2 Sr management and 4 employees! Good severance package though so takes the pressure off. Meanwhile, I am still there.....going to be very weird not spending lunch running errands with him etc. And I HATE driving on winter roads-like terrified of this. So I am madly looking for a new position somewhere close by. I would like to hang in there till March/annual bonus but not sure its worth it. I will be able to work from home 4 days a week till the end of the year "to get some plans in place" but after the 1st it looks like I will only be able to work one day a week from home. Anyhow time of many readjustments! And lots of family coming next week so trying to get time & motivation to get the house cleaned, rooms ready, backing done next week etc.

Not liking the snow dump we got Monday-chickens are trying to figure this all out. The new ones no longer have all the space to hang out in "separate flocks" like they have been.

Delish: Ava is such a sweetheart-she follows me around like a puppy. Shes still having a difficult time integrating with the others. I had her quarantined for a month, then in a large cage in the coop for a couple weeks to get used to things...think that helped a little.

I got new furniture today! Same couches I already have only in a different color. Lol And Jon finally got a Lazy Boy recliner. I have a headache from the bright lights in the furniture store. It got so overwhelming (I shopped for furniture last weekend too) that I just decided to sick with the same ones. Kinda lame, but it's done and I don't have to think about it anymore. Maybe.chickenship wants to use his severance pay to buy my old couches to put in the basement or the coop. Lol Jon wants to use the cushions for roofing jobs and burn the rest.

400

Spent the day at the spay clinic. 28 animals total. 17 were TNR (trap neuter release) and barn cats from Florence area.
One little kitty wasn't able to be spayed. She only weighed 1.5 lbs. Needed to be 2 lbs.
Made for a long day standing and scrubbing the instruments but still is one of the most rewarding feelings to be involved in.
FYI by spaying/neutering one animal you are preventing 5000 births over its lifetime ! Unbelievable but true !

Hi All!

Angie.... Too bad about the Layoff.

Well, we got snow, I think at least a couple of inches. It looks pretty light so not too bad.

Nothing else new..... Night All!

Morning everyone!
Got another dusting of snow last night. Acceptable as it didn't plunge down the temps over night like the last few and upcoming nights. Not looking forward to Thursday. Brrrr

FT it's so great you get to help with the SN clinics! Wish they would do that up here but of course they don't. Too country I guess.

Everyone else is fine, besides our Scovies who figured out they can fly on top of the car port to watch around. Before they fly down again due to the cold and chase the others away from their somewhat covered straw sitting spots into their house, cause THEY own it now. Lol. At least they don't give me the run around anymore for lockup at night. It's too cold for them I guess to wanna stay outside.

The chickens decided to take refuge in their hickey tower where queen Aretha rules over everybody there. They avoid even peaking out the door at that wet cold white stuff and rather huddle in there all day long. Plus, with the new feeder cube in there they have something to do too now.

SO is defrosting his tractor from the frozen spot to try and replace the throttle cable that broke. Then he's gonna move the pile of dirty straw out of the pen areas and the ducks will have a bit more space for lockup at night! Too bad deep litter doesn't work on non-ground floors. Would save money and work.

Oh the sun is trying to peak out! At least will take a bit of the chill off I hope. Gonna have some hot chocolate now. Later and stay warm and safe!

taking a well deserved break,,

I got the pulley mounted on the featherplate,, It took some ingenious thinking, but I got it centered within 1/16 th of an inch..

wild sam, what do you mean by deep litter doesn't work on non dirt floors ?

I deep litter on concrete and on dirt floors..

when I had piles of wood chips, I would lay down a 4 to 6 inch layer on the bottom,, then cover that with straw or old hay .. keep adding straw until spring . the wood chips allowed the liquid to drain and the straw stayed quite dry .. (until it got all pooed up) that is when I would add more straw..

FYI Muscovys do not protect their feet like ducks and geese do.. never learned the trick , didn't need to , from where they are native..

ducks and geese pull their feet up off the ground when they lay down.. Scovies keep their feet on the ground and lay down on them,, that is why scovies freeze their feet ..

If you give scovies a deep layer of straw (over 6 inches deep), they won't freeze their feet as readily ..

Our schedule says Packers play at noon,, TV says 3PM ..

I think the deep litter method is gross. Especially if you have ducks. Who wants to sleep in all of the other birds' poop all winter? I clean my coop multiple times during the winter and put a deep bed of straw down.
