Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Chilly Morning To Everyone. Nice batch of kraut TO! Yep, still bowhunting and I do gun hunt also. My freezer is calling for more venzun soon.

How much are you gonna charge for the plucker Jim? Most of the feed mills order birds from sunneyside....you can place a order there and they will call you when they arrive...they get a small cut, but then you don't have to order them, except tell them what you want.

I need to go get feed also.

Looks like I have some rat tunnels by the coop. In the last backyard poultry magazine a lady said she eliminated all the rats by placing small pieces of real chocolate in the holes....she didn't know if it killed them or they just up and left.....any thought's? I'm gonna go out and dump a bunch of real chocolate chips in their holes and see what happens....LOL! I have nothing to lose, except the chips.

Nice Packer win yesterday. I'll bet you were glued to the tv weren't you TO.

Nothing better than new equipment H&R.

Whirlwind week here: Mike was laid off this past week-dept cut of 2 Sr management and 4 employees! Good severance package though so takes the pressure off. Meanwhile, I am still there.....going to be very weird not spending lunch running errands with him etc. And I HATE driving on winter roads-like terrified of this. So I am madly looking for a new position somewhere close by. I would like to hang in there till March/annual bonus but not sure its worth it. I will be able to work from home 4 days a week till the end of the year "to get some plans in place" but after the 1st it looks like I will only be able to work one day a week from home. Anyhow time of many readjustments! And lots of family coming next week so trying to get time & motivation to get the house cleaned, rooms ready, backing done next week etc.

Not liking the snow dump we got Monday-chickens are trying to figure this all out. The new ones no longer have all the space to hang out in "separate flocks" like they have been.

Delish: Ava is such a sweetheart-she follows me around like a puppy. Shes still having a difficult time integrating with the others. I had her quarantined for a month, then in a large cage in the coop for a couple weeks to get used to things...think that helped a little.

I am delighted you like Ava!! She is a sweetie and will give you tons of eggs!
Yep that's true about the scovies. My first scovies drake got sever frost bite and ET put him out of his misery. So we'll see if scovie crosses inherited the instinct or not. I have a bunch of crosses. My luck half will and half won't.
Wilds am how far are you from Rhinelander? The spay clinic travels and the ho to several towns every week. I just volunteer when they are in Crandon because it is only 7 miles from here. If they are in dire need for a volunteer I will go to Rhinelander or Antigo but 30+ miles one way is to much traveling for my old cars to do on a regular basis. Not to mention I was not born rich but beautiful....LOL in my next life it will be the other way around! LOL
Speaking of $$$ I have the 15gb plan on att because I use my smart phone for Internet now. I kept seeing the commercials for the 30gb plan for same price. Called up...sure enough they have a special that might end tomorrow for the 30gb...exact same price !
I barely was under the limit of 15 !
So I'm a happy camper now with the 30gb. I still think it costs to much but watch a gonna do if you live in the boonies and you can't even get del from your local phone company !
Thanks for volunteering!!

Bigz, I think you need bakers chocolate for that. And if you have a dog, it'll poison it too! So be careful

also:

1 Cup flour
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Baking Soda
Those three ingredients, which everyone has around the house, are all you need to get rid of your rat or mouse infestation.
Once the ingredients are mixed together, place small amounts in tiny bowls, and store them in places where rats are leaving their droppings.
The reason that this edible poison will kill rats is because the bicarbonate in the baking soda will mix with their stomach acids and kill them. Rats can not burp or belch, so they will die.
If you can fix a small trap to put the poison in, the rat will not be able to go off and die, causing a smell. If you want safe rat poison, try this recipe.

Thanks for the advice cuties, and the recipe delish...I'm willing to try anything safe that works. Hopefully I will see results in lack of tracks and activity...dang vermin of anykind are always looking for a free meal.

No hunting today...way to cold for me. Some day i'll have a heated hunting shack like most of the smart old people in this neck of the woods.... maybe.

good evening,
for some reason I did not get any morning posts until just about now.. no matter, I wasn't home anyway ..

Grandson had car trouble so I was out of the house at 7 AM,, no cuppa until 11 , when I finally got some breakfast..

I got home at 4 PM and had supper.. took a nap.. then went out to the shop to see what damages I could do.. I got two of the four legs squared and planed.. then I glued up leg number 3.. tomorrow I will glue up leg #4 ..

the 3rd goose who was missing for a few days ,, showed up today,,
We have no clue where she was ..

ducks and geese can stay outside all winter,, just make a good wind break on the North, East and West,, leave the south open for sunlight,, put a deep layer of straw on the floor and toss some kind of roof on it.. bales of straw work just great for this.. then next spring you can use the whole house for mulch in the garden ...

for the roof, I place a couple of boards across from East to West and lay bales on top of them,,

this is the same kind of shelter I had for the early batch of puppies,, only for them I closed off the South side also and left just a small doorway with a cloth hanging down .. I spread a thick layer of straw in front of the shelter and the puppies spent a lot of time outside on that ..

Delsha, toss a few chocolate chips into your recipe and it sounds like the cookies Annie makes for me,, she calls me a rat sometimes, so maybe she is trying to get rid of me ???

I just had a thought,, I haven't started my tractor up for a couple of weeks.. only once or twice since I got it back from the fixit shop.. I hope they didn't drain the antifreeze and replace it with plain water.. I will have to give that a check tomorrow.. i hope it is not the case ..

Hi All!

DH has been putting the chicken's "breakfast" pans a few feet from the coop door, but within sight. Those birds won't go the 2-3 feet in the snow to eat! The turkeys as expected are fine with the snow. Oddly, the guineas (that come from north Africa) are OK with it. Not the chickens!

Night All!

Hm Jim, sounds like a good idea. But idk if I could get them to stay in it without locking them in for a while. They are so used to going into the coop.
Last night I did fill the bottom of a 50 gal drum with straw. Put the heater up on bricks. And added water to the coop. We will see how that does.

good morning,

FOOD,, that is the training method .. put food into the shelter for a few days,, after a while they just will gravitate to there..

made a single cuppa,, too hot to drink yet.. it never tastes as good as a whole 14 cup pot batch does.. must fall under the heading of; you can't make a small pot of soup ..

nothing new here,, just working on the chicken plucker .. it is taking shape ..
