Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hello everybody, I'm new here and actually from the UP. But, I'm a huge Packer fan (my husband is a Lions fan...his only fault). Both of our children currently live in Milwaukee and I spend a lot of time visiting and shopping in Wisconsin. So, I figured those of you that live in Northern Wisconsin would be better resources for me.

I currently do not have any chickens, but we are finally building our new home on 40 acres and one of the first orders of business will be adding chickens. We do have a 8'x12' or 12'x16' (we don't remember how big we built it!) building that will be used for the coop. I am hoping to raise mostly egg layers, however I am mentally preparing myself for some birds to end up in the freezer. Right now I am reading everything I can get my hands on and trying to be patient!

WELCOME JULIE!!

Just got home from the Fondy swap. Met up with Cuties & Co and got me some baby BLRW chickaroos. I've always let the hens raise chicks but my big girls don't seem to want to be broody so here I go with a brooder for the first time. The largest of the flock is an escape artist already. She looks everything over carefully and you can almost hear the gears moving in her head. (A wee bit scary looking like the velociraptors (sp?) in Jurassic Park)

The swap was very crowded - I think the warmer weather got more people out of the house. Last year at this time, if I remember correctly, it was pretty danged COLD!

Jim, The guy selling 11 month old laying hens ($5) was there. Battery hens with beaks damaged. (I couldn't tell you if they were a year old or 20 years old.) I've seen him before with his crates crammed full of birds.

Lots of lovelies there and lots of temptation. But I wasn't weak. Maybe because the hubs was along?

I'm new to this site and I enjoy it a lot cause I get to see a lot of peoples opinions on back yard chickens. I have my own right now 3 baby chickens at the moment. I was curious on how you can put a profile photo of here? Ive been trying to figure it out and so far I've had no luck :/ Any help will be well appreciated!
