Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

We're working on getting the Amery ordinance on poultry changed. Right now nothing is allowed within city limits. If anyone had any info to pass along, please do. The issue will be brought up at the city meeting next week. There has already been a petition turned into city hall with more than the minimum signatures required to review the subject.

I am going on YouTube and looking for ideas for a dimpler typ of tool to poke holes for planting onion sets.. otherwise I will have to invent one..
Jim hold your right hand up,,,tuck in your thumb,,,spread you fingers,,,now point them at the floor. God given "dimpler" pull every other set for green onions, then do another thinning if the onions are doing well,,,leave the last few in at 4-5" apart to get the biggest onions.

Yeah I know how much you like shop work and making things,,,but it's pretty simple to use the hand method,,,insert fingers just deep enough to cover the bottom 2/3rds of the set, pat down, water in. I use 2 rows about 8" apart,,shallow trench between filled with poultry compost. Keeping onions consistently watered is a key.

I'm just north of Stoughton.

With all the losses being posted on here lately I thought everyone could use a dose of cute. Couple day old Australian Spotted Ducklings.

Been looking for a couple ASD's for some time, finally broke down and ordered the minimum from holderreads. Showed up this morning. Once I figure out what I have I'll be selling off the extras at cost if anyone is interested.

I just saw your post on Facebook and was going to see how far you were from me before responding.

Last summer, I had a few hens get their sides torn open by the roosters. It looked a lot worse then your hen Irish, but animal bites are way worse. Be sure to keep a very close eye on that wound for redness, heat and swelling. It may get infected.

For the torn open skin, I washed the injuries out really well, loaded them up with antibiotic ointment without the painkiller (great point BBP), put a tough pad on the wound (make sure to warm it in your hand then press & hold it on the would for a few minutes) and then wrapped them really well with vetwrap to prevent them from yanking it off. Then I put them in a cage with a towel over the top to help keep them from getting too much light to prevent them from laying eggs. I also put vitamins/electros in their water & gave them some foods high in protein & vitamin A. I always isolate my injured birds from the rest of the flock until they are completely healed. Otherwise the other birds may pick on them and slow down the healing process. The last thing a sick or injured bird needs is more stress. A warm, dark and quiet place works wonders to speed up healing.

These are the Tough Pads. I got them at Walmart. I will never be without them in my chicken first aid kit anymore. You can just leave them on until they fall off. Since a couple of my girls had such extensive damage that should have had stitches, I left them on for two weeks. Then I removed the vet wrap. The birds removed the pads in a day and the wounds were completely healed.

Thanks, CC. Good things to know!

Quote: thanks Dan, now picture this,, I have my hand held out in front of me , elbow down and wrist up.. all of my fingers are folded down except one .. guess which one..

I could do it your way, but there is nobody at the end of the row to pick me up..

I modified the hand potato planter and used it to plant the bundle of about 40 onion sets..
It took only about 15 minutes and no squatting or bending needed..
a piece of 1" conduit and a piece of duct tape is all it took..

I asked Annie where the corn seed was from last year.. she knew .. I said, I am pretty sure the planting plates are in that box.. they were .. sometimes I amaze myself ..

Hi All!

CC.... was that one of your Bluekote encounters?

Nothing new.... Night All!
You know that she did it just to show off her expensive rings ..

going to rototill a little more today, pick a few rocks and plant a half pound of peas ..
Man !!! are they charging a lot for seeds,, seems it would be just as cheap just to go to the farmers' market .. $2.95 for about 40 onion sets.. shat ???

I modified my hand potato planter to accommodate (accept) onion sets..

I still am not getting notified "immediately" when posts are submitted ..
