Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi strangers, been a bad girl and have a zillion pages to scan through!
Got a dozen eggs from cuties exactly 3 weeks ago tomorrow. Lost 3 due to my forgetting to put soft cushioning material on the floor of the nest box. She cracked them while rolling them, but I can not figure out how she got them out of the nest box, out of the coop and into the middle of her run? Both the nest box and coop have lips 1-2" high to keep the straw/shavings inside... Tonight cause I just can't stand it I moved and checked the eggs and 3 are pipped... So eggciting.
TO a woman I work with also knows someone near you who is under quarrentine, hope this all ends soon and that the fox finds another food source. We had a coyote in the yard here during the afternoon... Too tame for my comfort. He will have to be moving on shortly as the field where he and his companions live will be built up with another 500 homes...Time to move
Hubby got notice he his job of 42 years will be eliminated. So looks like he will be retiring and I will be carrying the health insurance. It was a good run... People these days do not ever work for just one company. Will be nice come Sept., to come home to a good meal and clean house though.
Peas are up lettuce, swiss chard, carrots too! Asparagus really is sucky this year. One side of the bed is raised and I am wondering if maybe the roots froze, but we have a great crop last year and I think it was a colder winter....We put a new fence around the garden last fall and didn't put the gate on till two weeks ago. Went to break up the ground around the asparagus and had a nest of 6 bunnies. So cute when they are little but get me my pellet gun when they are eating my tulips!
Take care all, hedging on the Bash but its still 2 weeks away....

Hi All!

Firstchick.....Could you tree be crabapple?

Flowers and fruit come in a large variety of shades from white to dark red. Theses were the closest I could find to what you showed.

Jim.... Maybe a picture of your nasty shrub/tree.

I think there was more but... CRS!

Night All!

we do not have any here,, they are at the house that my parents owned in Wausau,
My nephew owns the house now, and I know that a couple of years ago, he had a guy come with a Bobcat and rip a bunch out.. they had crept about 20 feet into his lawn,,

Ya know, maybe crabapple, I am going out today to check for leaves and thorns, don't expect to find leaves but do thorns and crabapples do not have thorns.

Hello!

My name is Magen and I live in New Berlin, SE Wisconsin. My husband and I are currently looking into starting a small flock of buff orpington, as I've read that they are very good with small children (we have an 11 year old, 10 year old, and 8 year old) and docile.

I don't have any yet, but will be visiting our local feed store tomorrow to check out availability and cost. I know it's a lot to ship live animals, so I don't want to go the route of a hatchery yet.

Any advice on a good coop for around $300 for 4-5 hens would be appreciated, along with any other advice you have for a beginner!

Nice to meet everyone!

MORNING....welcome to byc

You guys are soon busy here! Hard for me to keep up. So much I wanted to comment on.
Glarner, where are you located? I am near Waupun. You are looking for different breeds of chickens? I would gladly trade chicks for plants! Only catch is that they are straight run. I do not know how to sex until they crow or lay an egg lol
Momgille, congrats on the pips! You could build a pen around mama right in the coop :)
Jj how are yours coming along?
We learned our lesson the first year on production type birds. No matter how much you work with them they are wild! We wanted pets. So found some.great breeders. We did a lot of traveling. But got some good birds for pet and 4-h.

Sad day.
Blake has just one hen that he actually really likes. I am learning that the animals are not his thing as much as Sydney and I.
She has been broody we left her where she was. Thinking it was not too bad a spot. This is our first time not moving a hen. But she is Modern Game Bantam. And I figured they are not highly broody. So I didn't want to break her on accident. I knew Blake would really enjoy this. She was in a huge cement deal that must ha e been used to water cattle just outside of the barn. And underneath two kiddy Poole that we store.inside.
This morning Syd went to check at about 9. There was a coin in there :,(
It ate.most of Frosted Jelly and half of her eggs! :( this was not a normal coon. I think it may have tried for a visit in the past. And our dogs got but did not kill it. It had a really ripped up and infected back end. And was probably starving to death. Hubby took care of it and we are sad. My heart breaks for my son.
The remaining eggs are in the bator. I hope .y poor boy gets a baby put of them.
Lesson learned. Never ever leave a broody outside of your coop. Even if they seem to be safe in a huge cement thing.

Anyone else in Greenville Hortonville?

Welcome to the Cheeseheads. We have a get together the end of the month. Check out the info in my siggy...putting faces to names and friends back together for a weekend!

Dang, that sucks cuties. Darn coons are always getting into trouble.

Connie, hope Gary is looking forward to retirement. I took a early one and never looked back....life is short and time is precious....I think he will be glad they cut his position.
