Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I think they turned a dark red, but, I can't remember for sure. I know they did not get very big on either of the trees and I don't know if maybe that is because they are old trees or need another tree for cross pollination. Guess I will have to wait to see what they do this year. So proud of my Gimpy, she is healing just fine. She is putting her foot down for longer periods of time and she sure is a scraper. When I take stuff out for them they all crowd around the door and she is one of the first to get some goodies.

I always thought crab apples were about an inch to 1 1/4 inches in diameter,,

I am still sticking to my vote as quince or thornapple..

If you cut one of the fruits in half cross wise, the seed cluster should make a 5 pointed star ..
that would be some sort of apple..

Different types of crabs have different sized fruit. I have 4 different types of crabapple trees here & only one gets fruit that are about an inch. The rest are all smaller. One of them is really small, like currant size.

The thornapples in google images seem to have a leaf more similar to cranberries. Quince fruit can be large. DHs cousins had some quince trees. I never saw the need to want to plant one in my yard though. Not the most tasty.

BTW no thorns on any of the trees, the other day, I was looking at the pics when I said it had thorns.
Sorry Jim. I guess this rules out the thornapples. But don't feel bad. It isn't a cranberry either.

ETA: good point on the flowering crabs. I think at least a couple of mine, if not all, are exactly that.

Quote: thorns, then no thorns,, no thorns = no thorn apples....

I ruled out cranberries right away,, high bush cranberries, but not cranberry trees..

nobody can ruin my day,, I got Ollie up and running..

I even moved the turkey pen from in front of the apple tree. it is so full of blossoms that it was a shame to have anything in front of it. and I know for a fact it is an apple tree...
I needed Ollie to move the pen..

while I was working on Ollie in the blackberry patch, the bees were buzzing me,, that made me happy.. we needed this warm weather to get them flying so they can pollinate the apples..

I think I will be going to bed in a little while,,
now that I have Ollie running, I can hoist the riding lawn mower and work on it at eye level..
If I get that running , you will really see me dance ..

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been so quiet since I joined. @Celtic Chick has been helping me a TON via PM.

The ladies are doing well! Starting to get their wing feathers, and eating and pooping and sleeping!

I had to clean out the brooder today, and it was quite muggy and humid earlier, so I let the ladies outside for a few minutes. It took them a moment to realize it, but then they started picking at the grass and walking around. It was too cute not to share. Supposed to be warmer again tomorrow, so if it doesn't rain, I think another adventure outside might be in order!

If it makes fruit, I will do that.
