My middle kiddo is done with school, oldest is done on Tuesday. Then summer schedule begins... swim lessons in the mornings, Kinderchor Mondays, I take ballet Tuesdays, baseball Wednesdays, therapy Thursdays. I'm exhausted already!

DH will be happy when he comes home from work today to the smell of this crisp in the oven!

Hi All!

All is well here. No ticks from the Bash! LOL

Night All!

DH had one imbedded on his belly.

Nice day here...almost caught up with the grass cutting and hoping the garden is finished tomorrow. Thanks for supper tonight Cind...the pulled pork is delicious..thanks for sharing it!

Suzie canned 5 quarts of dilled sparegus today along with a couple lbs frozen for the future. Good stuff for sure. Some folks don't care for it...don't know why?

Hope you all had a great day!

Yum!

I did have a great day, too..

I got garden #2 tilled,  twice..  then I started on the far end and planted 2 rows of green beans, 2 rows of yellow beans, and finished up the whole rest of the garden with sweet corn,,  I didn't count the rows, but I used up just short of 1/2 pound of seeds..

I plant only buttercup squash,,  tomorrow that will happen..  and some cukes, and carrots..
I ran the tiller between the potato rows..  Annie hoed between the plants..  I wanted to pull some of the loose dirt up around them, but my back had given out on me hours before already,,
I can take the tilling,  just can't walk so far before my lower back kicks out..

Annie was a sweetheart and picked rocks as I tilled..  got about a heaping wheelbarrow full..

Next year I am not going to dig so deep with the drag..  I have a good layer of dirt to play with now..
no sense dredging up more rocks ..

Brent, did you ever make asparagus soup with the tough bottoms of the asparagus ?
I love asparagus soup..

a Hmong lady stopped in a few minutes ago..  she has been here a couple of times before..
she bought all of my guineas last fall..  she wanted to buy some more, but I am not selling until fall..
she wanted to buy the two goats..  I am not ready to sell them for food , just yet ..

maybe soon Sande FT will check in and then I won't have to type such long posts..

.........jiminwisc..........

Does the asparagus soften up Jim?

Yay!!! Another graduate in the house! Two down and two to go....... Nice ceremony too, very semi-formal which makes it fun for all who attend. It is going to be very odd only sending two kids off to school next year.

:)

Congrats!

News here: all summer garden planted. Also,DS moved back to his mom's and I made him take the 2 rabbits with him. So I'm looking forward to getting my cleaner coop back. I loved the rabbits, but they are messy.
Bonus in all of the craziness over the past year...no kids equals empty nest! Nathan and I are looking forward to more fishing, traveling, etc.

the asparagus does soften up.. but the tough strands are still in there,,
you can use a blender to cut up the asparagus, and then strain the soup to remove the tough pieces. the flavor is all there in the end..

I just love those pups Jim. So darn cute.

Wish I could feel sorry for your son Cind.

Firstchic, I wouldn't use lime in your coop either. Is that your only nest box? I would spray it with a bleach/water mix, let it air dry (block off the box so the girls can't get in there or do it overnight) and then sprinkle it with either baking soda or DE to help dry it out further. It kinda sounds to me like your hen just had organ failure & burned out like the production breeds do. I don't think it was anything contagious either. Those things happen to chickens.

Get yourself some good heritage breeds. They are much heartier. Will your new coop be insulated or heated? These are factors to consider before selecting breed. If there will be no heat or insulation, choose breeds with pea or rose combs so frostbite will not be as serious an issue. Also look for heavier breeds. Bantams do not like the severe cold. Then again, who does?

Bigz, that dilled asparagus sounds delish!

Huntress, so sorry for your losses. I agree that the illness was probably brought in from the new flock. As Jim said, that will always be an issue whenever you add new birds no matter how long you quarantine. I believe Delisha takes some used bedding from each flock and tosses it into the other flocks area to help slowly introduce them to the other birds organisms to help their immune systems. I hope you can get all your birds healthy soon. I think you are doing a very smart thing by not selling any birds at this time & not letting your chicks get exposed. Good luck!

Yes wonderful to live here today, just before the mosquitoes start their humming... Rib Eyes on the grill and fresh lettuce salad from the garden. I am trying to lay down newspaper and top with grass clippings instead of weeding this year. Garden is done and most everything is up. I am one of those who can not be allowed into a nursery... always room for more flowers, perennials etc...
Did a fun thing last night it is called a beer trolly. Bachelorette party for us workmates. 12 people peddle a cart
But my butt is sore today...
