OK, there was something. Could that egg have been an old one that got kicked around and buried, then happen to resurface? That white looks like from a cracked egg that was around a few days.

Another question

The eggs laid by Gimpy (Delaware) have little bumps on one end of the shell.....what is that?

good morning,
it just started to sprinkle here,, we are supposedly going to get a lot of rain before it is all over.

I do hang the heater on the wall of my brooder pen. I do not use totes or swimming pools..
If I did use a tote or swimming pool, I would maybe set the heater on something at the edge of the container and blow the warm air into it..

that rough edged egg is nothing to worry about.. there are some eggs with rough shells all over..
they must be pure heII to lay for the hen, but no chicken ever died from it..

the egg is formed in the chicken, and then starts it's journey down the tube.. the shell material is secreted from the walls of the tube and it hardens as it moves along..

To everyone in this forum: I have been following this thread for a couple of months now and I'm a bit disappointed. Obviously most of you have been very practical in your breed selections, you work hard, you celebrate with friends and family. Where is the chicken enabling? The guilty confessions of dysfunctional behavior? Surely there are some here who want to confess to buying some silly kind of bird. Moreover, don't you want to list each frivolous breed (along with age, sex, number available, and price)? Anybody? Just let it all out, you'll feel better. And don't forget to mention your location or distance to major city.

EggheadWI- I, unfortunately or fortunately since I can't have chickens, have not a guilty confession regarding buying a silly bird. I did start off with only 4, which advanced to 7(see my signature line for the types), and sometimes more when I hatch eggs (and before I take out the old ones and roos). My chicken enabler is Vicki (aka Delisha). My confession, which I don't feel guilty about AND is known alread to everyone here, is that I cannot legally have chickens! We do have plenty of enablers here, but we are not limited to just chicken enabling. Noooooo, we have horse, goat, rabbit, other types of birds, dogs, and others (help needed here, I can't remember them all ). Most of the people here are in production for meat sale, live bird sale, chick sale, egg sale, show line breeding, show birds and even egg hatching. There are plenty, though, that have made those random purchases (mostly due to their kids requests). Some though, do have polish, frizzles, and injured birds that they just HAD to buy. I'll let each of them come out of the woodwork to announce themselves.

Once you get to know us a bit better, it will become obvious which are frivolous purchases and which are flock enhancers. Welcome to WI Cheeseheads though!

Yup, its sprinkling here too, but, tonight we are suppose to get a bunch. Well, now my DS wants to get 30 RIR's. He will be working on the shed converting it to a coop for the new ones. He is also putting up a 50 x 50 fenced in area for everyone. The shed is 8 x 10, is that big enough for 30 plus 5 when the chicks get bigger? How many nest boxes would I need? Does anyone on here have RIR for sale?

So here is a story (of a lovely lady...no just kidding). Tuesday night, the neighbors dog was outside barking all night long. So, Wednesday, I stayed home from work, because I was tired, and late in the day I asked them if she could come over to play with Theo.

Back ground story-they have a small yard, haven't yet completed the fencing to close up their yard, so the dog (which is still a puppy, golden retriever) is always on tie out.

To continue, I brought her into our fenced yard to let her play and run AND to get tired. She and Theo (both fixed) ran around for hours, yes in the 90 degree weather, they played until they couldn't play anymore.

So, the final question...did she bark last night? NO!

Since they each enjoyed it so much, we asked permission to have her over again.

my cornish X"s are using the roosts already,, solid chickens for 16 feet. they are just over a month old..

No sign of them just lying next to the feed dishes yet.. they go outside like normal chickens and forage...
