Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

A couple tips for "forcing" tomatoes

top the plant,,,cut off the main vine and terminate all new growth on branches

in a week or so you should see faster ripening,,,,if not

root prune the plant,,,,use a vertical shovel placed 6-8* from the stem,,,step down to the top of the shovel ,,,,,do this on 1/2 of the plant,,,,you are cutting the tips of the roots,,,,,just a simple straight down jab is all it takes.....

remember,,,,only do 1/2 of the plant,,,,,,

these 2 things both will signal the plant that it is done growing and needs to "ripen" and set seeds,,,,,,,,,pretty basic when you think about it.

Both of these tricks are common here in the north,,,,,,I'm guessing your weather hasn't been the best for 'maters this year,,,,rain,,cool nights both have been around the state this year,,,slows things down

OR don't do anything and hope for a really warm, sunny September

Thanks, unkadan! I'll give it a try. I was thinking about snipping off some of the new growth to concentrate the energy on the green tomatoes as there should already be PLENTY of fruit to work with once they ripen.

Hi All!

Yea, my grandpa used to call that "shocking the tomatoes". Makes them think they are dying so they ripen the fruit quicker before they die.

It very well could be ascites, (thanks for the clue) I think she's about 2. Wounder what would have caused it? She did poop a bit but haven't noticed that she ate anything.

Night all!

Hey all, busy day today was at my future mother in laws house all day after the farmers market. DH2B and I learned and canned our first peaches today. Been up late as my two black oegb eggs decided to hatch early... 2 hours to day 21. Lol anyway one baby hatched just after we got home at 9:30 and the other one had pipped. Earlier today I cranked my humidity BC the outer membrane of the egg was dry and white and the chick was struggling to puncture it got it up to 79% at one point mostly its been between 72-76% with the lower numbers earlier being 62-64% incubating at 32-34% average. Hoping for the best for the second pipper. Did carefully open a small air hole for the pipper as it barely made a pin prick when it pipped. Hope its out in the AM. First chick had some problems with half a shell stuck to its head kinda like the movies. Wish I could stay up but I need sleep. At least I know that baby can breathe

Jim how do those numbers sound to you? Never occurred to me and no one ever said nor did I read until yesterday that bantams do better with different humidity levels than large fowl.

Good night all hope to see my second new baby tomorrow. :)
Will post pics when dry and fuzzy.

I don't think we are going to can many tomatoes this year.. that's why I planted only 6 plants..
I noticed today that the tomatoes are piling up on the counter.. might have to do a batch ..

corn is my project every year.. we do pint packages and freeze it.. I try to do about 50 bags..
I don't ever want to eat store bought canned or frozen corn again..

Zeke didn't eat anything today.. he is bright and alert, but just off his feed ..
Maybe he ate a chicken ? naw, he wouldn't do that ..

So, I have something strange going on here....at least I think it is strange. I planted two bell pepper plants in the same raised bed as two tomato plants......they are fine. I planted two bell peppers in a bed with 4 jalapeno peppers....what I got was jalapeno peppers that taste like bell peppers... they have a little bite at the end but mostly taste like bell look like Jalapeno......do they cross pollinate? Anyone know?

Both healthy but a little sticky however only the back of the head and neck were affected. Didn't seem like my last hatch with sticky chick but I could be wrong it's only my second hatch.

Going out to top my tomatoes... already cropped the tips of the squash vines.... they were going nuts climbing up the lilacs and weighing down the Raspberries.... First year I have had a success with Fennel... made a stew using fresh from the garden tomatoes, basil and carrots with Italian turkey sausage, such a cool day here the stew was delish and warmed the house a bit. Packer game and something warm on the stove all is well! Sorry bout your sick girl Cindy.

Tough Packer Loss Today ( Jordy) ...dang.

Good advice for the failing maters....I picked a bushel today of the large ones and a half of Ice cream pail of grape maters....lucky for me, I guess. Hope my daughter doesn't get the fire fighter call, but she thinks she will be called for Geo Mapping again for the fighters on the ground. Good money, but dangerous rewarding work too.

I have the grill going with chicken, sweet corn, and baked potatoes...after a hour, it's looking like perfection in the making.

Have Fun.....bigz
