Yep or chipmunks... darned varmits made sure I did not get one strawberry, however chipmunks are losing on the ripening Tomatos... Big old rat traps 3 and 0 ;)

Anyone in the La Crosse County area? We are new to WI and new to chickens and I'd love to help out with someone's butchering day to learn how it's done.

I'm about 1hr or so East of you ( near the Wisconsin Dells ).

Will be doing broilers in about 1 month. Only 19 of them, so it wont be that long of a day.

I also do the spare cockerels from hatches. I have 2 that will be heading for the freezer.
If I can find a couple of hens ( currently only have 3 ) I will keep one the cockerels.

Spare cockerels...I'll do the plucking....with the broilers I'll use the plucker.

welcome to the site! You have to moved to a beautiful part of the state.

The kitchen smells yummy! I have a huge pot of vegetable soup on the stove and two loaves of Mom's Zucchini Bread in the oven. Just blanched and froze a big batch of green beans. The daughter is coming home this weekend so I have to make enough stuff to stock her up!

I went out to see the rabbits and quail I will be boarding and I'm in love! Wish I could have added the chickens to my flock but that's OK - I now know another crazy chicken family. Cuties, they are interested in getting some OEs from you next spring.

Firstchic, try this link:

Jim is also correct that different foods can affect the appearance of their poo. Kinda like when the wild birds chow down on too many mulberries & elderberries.

We had quite a few different varieties of peppers all planted in the same garden area one year. Some of the hot peppers were not, and some of the mild peppers were hot.

Irish, I too must applaud you for opening your home & heart to help out a fellow animal lover. Too many times the animals don't get so lucky. Good for you!

@Kildare49
What kind of hens you have? And what are you looking for? We have a few 17 week pullets we might part with to a good home to make room for the chicks we'll be hatching.

And yes Irish thank you for the kindness you're showing we need more people willing to help others and take in animals

Hi All!

The hen is still hanging in there, I think since there is nothing I can do for her and she seem alert, I'll see if she wants to go back to the coop. I'll put the kennel out there so she has a "safe place". If it looks like she's getting in distress I'll cull her, but maybe she can have a few more days with the flock.

Someone at DH's work gave us a few fresh veggies!

One of the "young ones" caught something today, I think it was a ground squirrel. Hard to tell from the house and she was running from the others so fast.... LOL

Night All!
