Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

If you ever heard the old term " Hen House " it's for a reason.... I have two coops here...one with roo's in with the hens and one with just hens.....the hen house produces way more eggs without a roo present. The constant badgering makes a huge difference.....when old hens can produce the way mine do...I'm convinced with their liking being left alone....just sayin.

@chickendreams24 Do you lock your birds in the coop at night? If so, what if you keep them confined a little longer in the morning to give them a chance to lay in the nest boxes? I hear that is what some do to "train" their chickens.

Just a shot in the dark..I'm looking for a day old to a few day old chick to buy. Long story short..we ended up with a single chick hatch and I'm sure it's going to get really noisy in a day or so..
I'm located in Central WI but would be willing to drive a bit of I can find one. At this point what kind doesn't matter.

Thanks!

yep training and patience... Dogs are a ton smarter than chickens IMHO... and you crate train dogs... So keep them in a confined area till they are a well seasoned flock... you will have plenty of time with them what is 10-14 days!

BTW nice Packer game we went to. Got 4 free 35 yd line tickets at our company outing and picked up 2 more for $20 ea at Krolls on the 20ys and 20 rows up... still managed to drop some serious money... $8 a beer $15 for hall of fame entry. But was a glorious day spent with the kids and the boyfriend and girlfriend I am one lucky mom

Here's my new addition to the store. Air conditioned and insulated (and also a bear to open and close by myself). I guess I'm now a serious gardener, eh? Right now I have potatoes, beans, tomatoes, mini pumpkins, 5 kinds of squash, carrots, poblano & jalapeno peppers, cut flowers, lettuce and kale. Soon I will have sweet corn, melons, and pie pumpkins. The danged groundhog is still taking his cut but it could be a lot worse. The deer are at bay - they did the most damage previously.

Bummer but then why not eat the egg that was in the nest box if indeed they are eating them? And why haven't any more been laid in the box if they arent? We also give them meal worm treats and veggies and scraps plus they get plenty of bugs in the yard every evening I watch them chase bugs around the yard and they are eating their feed still too.
Yeah we will all be grateful for a cool down even if its just slight. We have the week and a half old oegb chicks in the sun porch in a brooder and have been having to cool the porch its insane. I would prefer them in the house but we have very curious cats related to Houdini. Although I don't think they would kill them as food I'm sure the cats would believe them to be delightful toys.
Thanks Jim I will definitely be locking them up come the next cool down to get a better idea. Is there any one of those things you think is more likely?
I am betting that the egg eating is the LEAST likely ..
any chicken will eat a broken egg, but to break an egg and eat it is more rare ..

Irish that is sweet, you are living the dream! You can have the ground hog I have gophers and chipmunks that took ALL my strawberries and were nibbling on the tomatoes... but 3 good rat traps a dab of peanut butter have put a serious dent in the population! I have to get a better picture of the roo/hen I am still calling "Pat" almost as big as the one I know is a Roo but darker in color. Can you people explain to me the variation in color? Some are almost black with red lacing while several are very distinctive with blue coloring? Guess I didn't know what to expect when hatching those eggs Cuties

... Have a wonderful weekend all and On Wisconsin!

good Saturday morning,
I got up early, went to Marathon for coffee,,
came home and put the new mower blades onto the mower deck..
now I just have to mount the deck to the mower and hopefully I can finally mow some grass./hay..
It has been about 8 to 10 weeks since I mowed last..

I should take some pictures of the plucker in progress.. It is looking pretty darned nice..

I found some plucker fingers online for about half the price I paid last time..
IDK if they are the same quality, but I will take a chance once..

meanwhile the chickens are putting on more weight..
