Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Feels like winter has finally arrived. Not l9oking forward to things freezing in the barn. So far chores have remained easy. I am loving the mild weather. Keeps the birds laying well. Although the mud was getting old.
I am going to try to move the bators to the root cellar to cut down on the dust. Jim, how cool did you say your basement was? I think they will get up to temp. I will put a kds swim pool in there for a brooder I think. There aren't any vents in that room. So it will keep the rest of the house mildly dust free. I hope

I am also going to front the cash and get some of the EcoGlow heater. They are much safer than heat lamps. I will ask hubby to put the light 8n there on a timer. There is a window. But I think that would need to be suplimented.
Finally got rid of the old washer and dryer. So we have a little room in the basement again!
Cuties, the last batch of chicks I brooded, I skipped the heat lamp & just used a small animal heating pad. It really worked well & uses a fraction of the electric. I only had a small number of chicks so I used this one:

I also have a bigger one that is meant for dogs if you brood large numbers of chicks at a time. And they don't get hot on the bottom so you can safely use them in a plastic kiddie pool. Because they are meant to be used with animals, the cords are wrapped with wire. They are a fraction of the cost of those brooder heaters, especially if you can wait til the off season when they mark them down. Years ago I picked one up at Walmart for $9, originally $49.

Rainy Day here again...better than snow. Nice needed win for the Pack. We are gonna have our hands full with Cards next week.

good afternoon,

I have an observation to share..

when the Packers lose, they lose..
when the Packers win, WE win..

.not quite raining here, but it must be about 99% humidity..

I went to maynerd's and picked up a dozen 3/4" Elbows..
I know it is acceptable to bend the tubing around corners, but i think elbows make the job look neater..

I tried sharpening a spade bit last night,, haven't tried it out yet. I hope it works for boring the two holes through the beam,,

I had a guy answer five of my ads on Craig's List.. exact same wording in each response..
can we say , "scam" boys and girls ?

They won't eat grapefruit peels but they might eat the membranes.

Here is an extensive list of toxic plants. I think it is really overboard as it lists apples & other fruits, but they are referring to the seeds (in apples), which contain trace amounts of cyanide, and the plant parts. If you fed your birds nothing but apple seeds, then yes, they might die, but I have dumped a bucket of apples out for my birds and they are all still kicking just fine. Elderberries are also on the list for the plants & seeds, but I have quite a few of them planted in my chicken run (along with apple trees). Again, none of my birds have croaked and they love eating the berries, although sometimes they will get the thinners. Maybe that is what they mean by toxic, causing an unwanted side effect as opposed to being lethal. I suggest you use the list as a starting point and use your best judgement. As with most things, everything in moderation. HTH

Mine gobble up all the apples that fall from my trees, they also devour the raspberries and they go after the concord grapes as well. So far they do not seem to be bothered by any of it. I wouldn't mind being able to make some jelly if they would stop eating the grapes!

chickens are in the same class as scavengers.. IMHO
they will eat just about anything except grapefruit peels ..
I wonder how many apple seeds they would have to eat to become affected .. maybe apple seeds are good for them ?
it might be a natural way to kill worms .. just saying .. my chickens never had worms .. neither did I , come to think of it..

when I used to go fishing with my bil, I would ask him if he had the worms, he would say, yes, but I am going fishing anyhow..

kind of watching football on and off tonight..

I have to go see my heart Dr tomorrow morning.. I don't really feel it is necessary, but he must need my co-pay for Christmas shopping..

Hope you get nothing but great news at the Dr, Jim.

Figures they won't eat grapefruit peels since I will have a ton of them.

Been consistently getting 11 a day lately. Do you all think that means that 3 are not laying yet?

Make candied peels! They are very yummy!

Yes that was my lefse making for the year.

Jim, we all know you are just fine.

Watching BBC Top Gear. Love this show! Would love to drive some of these cars.....
