Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I believe I made 20 out of that batch. I did not measure out my potatoes after they were riced, so I probably had a bit too much in there. I suppose lefse recipes are like chocolate chip cookie recipes..... many to choose from! Look for a recipe with lots of potatoes, not too much flour (less than 2c for 6c potatoes) and go from there.

Candied citrus peels are a bit time consuming. To get the bitterness out of the peels, you have to simmer them in water with some baking soda in it. This water is changed out a few times. I cannot remember the rest, but in the end you have tasty sugared peels.

Hi All!

I used to make candied orange and grapefruit peels every year. It's hard to get enough suitable orange peels to make a decent size batch, you want the nice thick ones. Grapefruit peel is OK, but not as good as the orange peel. I summer the orange 4-5 times and the grapefruit 5-7 depending how bitter they are. Then you simmer them in simple syrup, drain and let almost dry, coat in sugar and enjoy. A lot of work but so good and addictive! I used to save up (good) peels in the freezer all year to make them for Christmas.

Well, I guess not taking care of the chickens for almost 2 weeks (DH has been feeding them) kicked me and them in the butt. I closed up tonight and found my sweet Jasmine (the hen in my Avatar) dead and ripped up under the bench.

I'm missing at least one other one too. I couldn't stay down there too long to see any more damage.

Night All.

Light Snow Dusting here today...enough to make the ground white, but prolly won't last long.

Dang Cind that's crummy to hear about your favorite hen. Hope the culprit doesn't come back for more.

The birds are out and about, but don't think they will find much to eat out there today.

Never made that stuff bl4...sounds good though.

Ae Cind, I am so very sorry about Jasmine

Thanks for the info CC! I can't get the link to work. But I will definitely give this a try!
Try these:

http://www.amazon.com/Manufacturing...id=1450834722&sr=8-16&keywords=heated+pet+mat

http://www.amazon.com/Manufacturing...qid=1450834722&sr=8-8&keywords=heated+pet+mat

If those links don't work, just search heated pet mat or K&H Manufacturing on Amazon. That is who makes the ones I have. And I have used them for many years. I even bought a used one from a second hand store & that one is still working good too.

Cind, I am so very sorry to hear about Jasmine.

The crazy Broodie hatched out one chick so far - cutie patootie! I picked up one of those heated mats at FF today, CC, I'll try it out on whatever she hatches. Six more possibilities still sitting under her.

So sorry about your loss, Cind!

We took in two bunnies who needed some good food and attention. Won't be long until they're back in shape. Two Jersey Wollies (doe and buck) are now ready for adoption. The barn is getting full!

Enjoy the warm temps!

Hope you get nothing but great news at the Dr, Jim.

Figures they won't eat grapefruit peels since I will have a ton of them.

Been consistently getting 11 a day lately. Do you all think that means that 3 are not laying yet?

Not necessarily , chickens do not lay every single day, so your number of eggs can cycle.. from half to 100% ..

dr appt went well.. he was explainging why I didn't have diabitise, and when he got done, I said, jokingly, in other words, Doc, I am healthy as a horse,, and without missing a beat he said, no, you only smell like a horse..
He gave me at least another year to live.. I figure that because he said I'll see you again in a year..

I never ate lefsa or made it, or spelled it..

candied orange peels and grapefruit peels sound like something I might try eating, but not making..

the two Daves came here today and we worked 6 hours .. we got all of the hot water lines torn out and replaced with PEX.
we had a very rough start trying to drill holes through the beam,
Gave up on that idea and strung the new lines just under the floor joists..
the PEX tubing comes in a role,, almost impossible to straighten it .. and it has to be supported every 16 inches to keep it from sagging..

we had four major leaks when we turned the water back on.
all they were was that the tubing was not pushed all the way into the fittings.. easy fix, just push them in further and the leaks are no more.

I think if I had to do it again, I would use cpvc tubing with these same type of fittings.. we spent way too much time rebending the PEX tubing to try ( unsuccessfully ) to straighten it..

Next week we will re-do all the cold water lines.. I think we will try to fasten them to the bottom of the joists on the long runs where they run parallel with the joists..

So sorry for your loss Cind, its true we haven't had our girls and boys long but it does seem to me to be the way it goes.

Had a scare here today with the birds. Heard a loud ruckous and looked out the window in time to see feathers flying and birds scattering. Went out to investigate and found all our birds hiding. Belle, one of our two favorite EEs, who was the obvious owner of the missing feathers, was in the garage with the main flock. Poor thing was shaking in her boots but seems unharmed and ate some treats for me right away but did not leave the saftey of the garage for a while. The rest of the flocks were also all free ranging and terrified they were all on high alert for the rest of the day. I didn't see what happened to Belle but based on their actions and eyes on the sky I think hawk. Although it had to have been almost right against the house perhaps that's what saved her running around the corner. Her shoulders, especially the right, are a bit sparse and some of her down is visible, but I'm just grateful she's okay. Once again I'm grateful to a rooster that hates me with a passion. It's time for him to go, I know, as he jumped at me last week and tried to spur me, but he's so good with the girls and after this I worry about taking away my only lf roo.

CC if the offer still stands for one of your orps we would love one. I can't have a rooster around here that of all people wants to attack his main care giver.

Ugh I know I'd feel differently if he had managed to spur me it just hard because he's perfect in every other way.

Also I'm wondering what everyone recommends for scaley leg that is preferably approved as we sell eggs, of course I will follow withdrawal guidelines. Just a bit worried about using something off label. Is it best to just treat all of the flocks even if I'm not sure they've been exposed?

Thanks all Merry Christmas!
