Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Love your bunny set-up CS!

Dang it's cold! Someday I will live in a toasty house that does not require plastic on the windows!

On the flip side, my cousin is moving to WI!!!! She found an awesome house on 16 acres just over the border near Salem. She is already planning on her chickens! :)

So, is anyone up at midnight besides me? I am concerned. We had bought an artic cube for the coop. I noticed the temp in the coop got down to 17 degrees and found out the dogs had pulled the electrical cord apart. We plugged it back in and the heater came on and started warming the coop. It got up to 21 and the heater shut off. It has a light on it but the warming tubes do not come on. So we unpluged the artic cube and plugged the heater in directly. Anyone knowing anything about these cubes know what is going on?

I know absolutely nothing about the cubes. But I'm up at midnight! Perks of third shift. Could be worse tho

Hi All!

If anyone is interested in the Walworth Co. Swap, it's in Elkhorn if you want to Google it.

Most of those cold weather cubes kick on at about 35*.

I made Chili for supper, it sure hit the spot!

Night All!

I am guessing an Arctic Cube is similar to a Thermo Cube ?
the Thermo Cube is calibrated to allow electricity to flow through at a preset low temperature, and then it shuts off after a high preset temperature is reached..
I forgot what the temperatures are, but
on is about 35F and
off is about 45F .
it will handle 1500 Watts.
I basically keeps water from freezing.
Those temperatures are plenty comfortable for chickens.

1stchik, maybe your heat is directed too much toward the cube. if the heater has a fan, make sure it blows away from the cube, and not toward it .

Frigid Morning here too. Yep X2 on your bunny set-up cs....what a easy peasy to clean set-up.you have there. Do you eat those bunnies too?

I'm hoping for warm weather, just to be able to enjoy the outdoors without a facemask on. The wind really has had a mean bite to it this week.

Chili sounds good Cind....we made two big venzun roasts yesterday so we would have the leftover stuff for making soup today....lots of garden veggies will go into the pot today and it will taste goodie for sure!

Stay Warm ... bigz

Yeah Jim, it is a thermal cube.....I forgot the name. Man, I don't know. The heater is pointed straight to the back of the coop and the cube is on the south wall....DS is coming home from being on the road for a couple of weeks, so maybe he can figure it out. Will it cause a fire hazard being hooked up directly? It is now 33 degrees in there? The back wall is the East wall in case you needed to know. When the cube is hooked up it only heats to like 23 .

I hope this shows up as I thought some of you'd like it.

Love it!

Hey all...CS love that bunny set up. still hoping we can try bunnies again someday. I know dd would love them. We got some when they were around 4 and with just starting chickens, angora mix breeds that took alot care and 2, 4 year olds...too much. Hope we can talk DH into trying again.
Chickens seem to be doing fine. Keep checking on my three bantams in the coop, but they are fine. Even the old 5 year old bantam brown leghorn. Lots of eggs right now so that is a plus. We do supplement light but not heat. Just the heated water bowls. the trick is getting the eggs out before they freeze while working.
Life is busy... still have a somewhat unhealthy mom , now father in law is not healthy... 2 kids in basketball and want a social life so we are running around alot.
Trying to find the right diet for me right now. I love veggies and eat tons of them...it is cutting out the cheese and carbs I love too. Trying to get health to go major hiking in yellowstone this summer.

Also in spring will be looking for hatching eggs for: cream crested Isbar, cochin(frizzle?), chantecler, amaracauna, old English, olive eggers( i got my first one after trying for years and I am hooked!)

otherwise trying to keep myself healthy, although curling up in a warm bed when I get home from work and pick up kids sounds good. Ah well a few more hours of work and then just have to figure out what to make for dinner. Might be a pork chop night.

Good to hear from you kris....yep, just stay within your skin is the only way to survive...perfection is a bit of a myth as far as reality is concerned with daily life. When the kids were home, the struggles were many and constant.

Just started feeding the wild birds again...amazing how fast they can find the free feed...the variety of birds is also amazing...now, I'm gonna have to keep their feeder full till snow melt...it's the right way to feed the wild birds.

bigz
